It's.
Still an eight day strike that brought two of the nation's busiest ports to a grinding halt is now over clerical workers.
At the ports of Los Angeles in nearby Long Beach walked off the job.
But it tentative deal brokered by LA's mayor means the -- are set to return to work two days.
We took on these challenges and tonight we were able to reach an agreement -- really pleased to tell all of you.
That my 101000 long short workers in the port -- -- Long -- they're gonna start moving cargo on the -- This strike had a huge impact on the national economy.
These two ports handle 44% of the -- -- cargo.
That's a billion dollars a day and merchandise including plenty of cars -- -- Japan and China John fund columnist for national review magazine coauthor of the book.
Who's counting with me now John good morning you mean by you wanna raise -- -- -- clerical worker.
I mean the -- pretty good 87000.
Dollars a year on the screen we can show our viewers 165000.
Dollars you -- compensation package.
One of the top paying US blue collar jobs.
Pretty good work -- you can get it.
I want to be a clerk but I don't think I'm gonna be in line for that.
Bill they really outrageous thing about the strike was this the port owners were willing to say.
All the clerks we'll have lifetime employment but if someone retires.
We want the flexibility to move their job around her to eliminate the position.
And the union said no.
And these -- basically still use paper invoices back and forth to make sure that.
You know the cargo moves -- clearly.
Look a lot of that can be out of David.
But these jobs a 165000.
Dollars -- apparently forever and as a result of that we had this unnecessary strike and it cost a billion dollars a day.
And the price of toys may go up on Christmas -- -- -- saying this strike was about jobs that are in place today.
This -- strike was not about benefits that was not about -- it was not about pensions it was not about salary.
It was about the job of these clerks moderate the port cargo.
And their jobs are going to be guaranteed for life.
But if -- wouldn't -- wouldn't be allowed to replace them or eliminate those jobs once people retired.
That's -- is -- the swamps of the debate was about what happens in the future so if you had a job as a clerical worker making what we put on the screen there.
You're okay for a lifetime.
Yeah well you know these union positions often get transfer two sons and daughters so I think we're talking about perhaps family legacies and some -- this is like this is.
This is economic hostage is that not.
Well what half the cargo goes through Los Angeles Long Beach almost everything from Asia you've got the economy by the short -- if you wanna strike.
And rather than spend a billion dollars a day on waste.
Robbed -- finally the mayor was able to get the Port Authority basically to cave -- Because I suspect this deal was dramatically weighted towards the unions -- you do you so you think the unions would have lost -- they got -- mediation because of one when the -- said it would have been bring in the mediators.
Well they got a deal -- -- bit.
The unions did not want to mediate because I think any mediator would say you've got to be can be.
We're not talking about current -- -- -- -- jobs in the future so I think that the this was a political resolution.
To an economic problem one more thing here billion dollars today that is huge money especially this time a year and you're saying that.
The cost of of gifts or presents or merchandise.
Could go higher as a result.
Look everything in this country is on just in time delivery stores -- product to come in at a certain time they plan that months in advance the strike lasted eight days this is going to disrupt the supply pipeline.
And ultimately could be higher prices down the road because somebody asked to pay for expedited shipping somebody have to pay for the supply disruptions after not free that it passive Dotson return good -- -- The consumer John fund thank you.
Interesting analysis twenty minutes past.
