Well who could forget those famous words Apollo eleven astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Leaving his mark on history becoming the first man to walk on the moon in 1969.

In a few years that followed our role in space grew in ways that we never thought possible today though marks forty years to the day.

That the crew of Apollo seventeen blasted off from Florida for what would be NASA's final mission to the moon.

Colonel Al -- was this command.

Module pilot for the Apollo fifteen mission back in 1971 he joins me by phone from vero beach Florida -- word nice to have you with us.

Well thank you very much for having me on today.

So when you hear that it's been forty years since our last footsteps on the -- mean.

How do you define these forty years in terms of our our space program.

I don't even like to think about it because if I think about it being forty years ago that tells me how old -- -- today.

And I was I was I was half my age when I flew.

So that tells you exactly how to play him today.

It sure does and and do you -- and how would you describe these past forty years we have made great strides even though.

The last footsteps on the moon were forty years ago would you have liked to have seen us go back more -- I mean how high -- mixed feelings about that I'm not sure that.

We wouldn't really accomplish -- a lot more by going back to the moon there are other things that we need to do.

But I think people have to understand -- -- stage program is a very very long term program.

We're talking hundreds and thousands of years to get where we need to go.

And the ball program was the first small step.

In giving us the capability to do that sort of thing.

So he has been is spent forty years since -- -- program that we've kind of taken a step backwards.

But I think human nature being what it is.

The time will calm when people will realize is that going to the moon is done enough going to Mars is not enough.

We're gonna have to go someplace where we can move.

Human population.

And at a time when we can't live here on earth anymore.

That's cool concept -- -- -- maybe talking a million years but but that's OK and universal time that's not very long.

Well in the next forty years let's let's boil down to just forty years and riveting -- our minds around it.

What would you like to see the US set their sights on -- Well I would like to see the US -- site.

On developing that technology.

To go where ever we need to go I'd like to see the US set its -- on developing.

The propulsion systems that will take us where we need to go and during the first step obviously -- go someplace like Mars.

Or go to an asteroid or you don't.

A further step from where we've been before but we need to develop -- -- that technology development is they key to the whole thing.

You know in this special coming up this weekend on fox -- -- -- astronauts talk about the experience of going to moan and native.

As always -- -- sound rhapsodic -- when they remember and it's for many was a religious experience what was it like for you to go to.

Well kinda cutting interest seeing that.
