I welcome back to fox highlights -- back from a quick break sticking with that military theme for this thirty minutes and so glad you're here with me on Laura Ingle and we have.
Another guest to bring on and talk about some good work that's being done.
-- -- hate the founder and CEO of spirit of America joining us from our Los Angeles bureau.
You can find him on Twitter -- spirit.
America and also online at WWW.
Dot spirit of America dot net will also get to that the FaceBook -- well the first -- -- wild welcome you to the program thank you so much for being here.
Great to be here thank you thank you so much all right so let's tell folks what spirit of America is all about what is this organization.
You know where did you get started and what's the mission.
Well spirit of America is a nonprofit organization.
And we brought provide exactly what our troops tell -- is needed to help them build goodwill.
And succeed in their mission and we're doing that mainly in Afghanistan but also -- Africa and elsewhere in the Middle East.
And it does there's a specific campaign going on right now tell us about that.
Yeah we have underway campaign called 68000.
And the whole idea is to build support for the 68000.
American troops could still serve and Afghanistan.
And we're asking people to do a couple of things one of which is to take a photograph.
With 68000 remember in the photo and uploaded -- or email it to us through our web site.
Of -- -- so we're looking at some fun photos of people putting it on their hands holding it up in a poster.
Oh and we have some celebrities to -- -- recognized and that's Michael from Kelly Michael isn't it.
The dissidents who else do you do you have other celebrity is that we're out we're rolling through some of well.
Well former secretary of state George Schultz just emailed his photograph to us today.
And that's up online as well but -- the whole point is that we're happy to have the celebrities of course.
But the whole idea is that the most Americans don't know that we still have 68000.
Of our countrymen -- country women serving in Afghanistan.
And what we're trying to do is build awareness of that and build support to help them be more successful in their mission and help them finish their job and that that's -- spirit of Americans about.
And tell us about the troops that are -- going online and seeing these messages is seeing.
The wall of support I was kind of feedback are you getting from them they must be thrilled to see -- -- are you getting -- some direct stories you can share us.
Well we are -- and I have to say that the Michael Strahan photographed by being former Super Bowl champ.
Was very well received by that the men and women down range in Afghanistan.
And for those who are serving of their their their troops that are still deploying to Afghanistan even -- summer coming home.
-- for those who -- going over it's extremely important to them and their families that they're not forgotten that America still stands behind them.
-- and and one way to think about it is we have these men and women out there they stand for America and what we're trying to do is help them show what America stands for.
Troops are saying are needed right now other than in the general support and just knowing that people haven't forgotten.
I understand that they have some pretty specific things that they are looking for with this right.
Yes and in spirit of America provides exactly what they need at the village level to be successful in their mission.
So that varies from village to village so we were helping navy seal team right now.
With water pumps were remote mountain village or other water projects that are underway with special operations forces and in the south of Afghanistan.
Some of the army units and special operations teams are telling us that winter blankets for Afghans -- Afghan police will help them.
Provide security and in a better way in the local areas there.
And why you know some people may be listening to this -- as say a wolf.
Why it why isn't the government doing this.
Well the what what we do is bring what the American people can do and the American people and what America stands for which include is includes our government of course.
The American people or more powerful than any force in the world so we bring with the American people can do -- add that to what you can do with government and military resources.
The spirit of America fills gaps we don't we don't duplicate.
What the government can do and -- restrictions on taxpayer funds that prevented from being used to fight for certain things so a spirit of America does is help the troops.
Do those things and we provide those things the troops need to be safer and more successful in their mission.
-- -- Think it is -- that some people know we hear written and here fox we certainly understand.
The need for this and I know that so many other Americans do as well.
But yet there are some that might go.
You know how are we done with Afghanistan I mean how do you convey that there is still this need and a need for attention specifically.
-- do you think -- are you finding that some people are are not us.
I don't -- -- say not caring but maybe just not realizing.
What is still need it.
Well the biggest thing that we find is that people don't know that there are specific ways to help our troops be safer more successful in the -- And that's very exciting thing for people to be able to participate and so that the big that concept of Afghanistan and what's happening in Afghanistan is a country.
It's hard for anyone to get their arms around.
What we help people do is understand what's needed by a specific group of soldiers or Marines or special operations forces.
And the idea that anyone in this country can reach halfway around the world and help our troops in that way.
Is actually something which which breaks through the the confusion about the whole story of Afghanistan as a country.
