Some thoughts now about what is going on here in Washington senior political analyst Rick him joins us good evening Brett welcome back -- to see you thank you.
If you have an ounce of compassion this Christmas season save it for John Boehner and the house Republicans.
President Obama is treating them as if he has them over a barrel headed for the fiscal cliff.
And he does.
This is not because mr.
Obama won reelection after all he won only 51%.
In needed -- greatest voter mobilization operation in history to do it.
His leverage now stem from the law which ends the bush tax rates on January 1.
Imposing new higher tax rates and a steep set of spending cuts that -- with special force on the military.
Nobody wants these things -- Republicans the low tax and strong defense party want the least of all.
Not only that but polls indicate that if these things come to pass.
The public by large margins will blame the GOP.
Speaker Boehner is trying to head this off by bargaining with the president to keep the tax rates as they are now.
And raising new revenue from rich people by closing tax loopholes.
In exchange mr.
Boehner wants the president to agree to serious reform of entitlement benefits the biggest drivers of the nation's debt.
Mr.
Obama says he wants the higher tax revenue and higher tax rates on the rich to boot.
But he is offered nothing to speak -- entitlement.
Unreasonable you bet but on top of it Boehner is under attack from the right for being a weak negotiator.
But he's not -- negotiator.
He's just got to we can't.
Read.
-- and all kinds of proposals out there Capitol Hill one being talked about is from Maine Republicans senator Susan Collins suggesting that maybe.
Small businesses.
Should be exempted from the.
Tax hike the -- higher tax rates right -- 250 -- this would get -- the republicans'.
Stated greatest worry about those higher tax rates.
On the so called rich because say Republicans that hits small business big driver of employment.
-- the truth of the matter is the Obama administration has said well.
Almost every small business in the country would falls below that they're not the rich people don't know account.
But that universe of small businesses at the White House is talking -- -- includes you know the smallest Internet vendor.
The truth is that the amount of the number of businesses that pay -- a higher rate or all the ones of any -- that would do any hiring.
So this would really who would really get it Republican -- it would be if you deceive the White House review and -- greeted this political curve -- that would Brett thanks to good.
