But first from fox at 3 o'clock in New York City a man and announced in a crowded food court I am the shooter.

And that he proved it.

That's from witnesses to last night's mall shooting spree as we get our first look at the gunman in -- yes.

He was 22 year old Jacob Tyler Roberts police say he stormed through a mall outside Portland picking his victims at random.

He wore camouflage clothing and had a hockey mask -- was armed according to police with a semiautomatic rifle like this one.

Investigators say he also had a vest loaded with ammunition and he was out to kill quote as many people as possible.

But sometime during the shooting spree the gun jammed the -- in the in the chaos.

All played out on police scanners.

Want to let that -- little little book that Google is still didn't get -- So I don't like it -- Well the cell phone video shows terrified shoppers making their way to safety hands in the air as they -- officers -- guns drawn.

The police say there -- as many as 101000.

People scrambling for safety even a mall Santa of course ran for cover.

Many barricaded themselves in back rooms and stores.

I'd jump on the ground control and close doors you know and I heard this guy yelled get on the ground get on the ground a couple times.

I've got and I just started running.

For us and it -- and everything there I bumped into several people and they're just not right it's his -- their lives in law and all cops say he killed two people and seriously wounded to teenage girl before that gun jammed.

And at some point cops say the gunman shot and killed himself.

Dan Springer made his way to the scene last night he's outside Portland what else we know about the shooter -- and.

Yes yes but 22 year old Jacob Roberts had no criminal history the only contact he's that would local police is as a crime victim.

We know he bounced around several schools finally graduating high school in 2008.

All we -- all the police searched his Portland home but they're not saying what they told.

From that home or anything about a possible motive cops did say the AR fifteen semiautomatic rifle he used was stolen.

Yesterday hours before this attack.

From someone he knew he was also wearing a special load bearing -- that allowed him to carry several fully loaded magazine clips.

It was not a bulletproof vest as first reported.

Police also say now it was definitely not terrorism.

There were no indicators that this was going to happen.

And every indication that we have to this point was that he acted alone in this.

-- police are still trying to determine exactly how many shots -- -- witness accounts range from twentieth up to sixty shot.

And Dan police are saying there were several reasons he wasn't able to kill more people.

-- perhaps the best one of the biggest ones.

Because as you mentioned in the lead in that -- jammed at some point temporarily stopping the attack.

He eventually got that going to work again he continued shooting put another big thing is the mall and global police had practiced response to a scenario just like this one.

Within the last year a very quick response from local police the first officers on scene within a minute of the 911 call.

And 101000 people all working very together.

I'd they were actually reacted perfectly police say those who could ran away from the -- -- those who could not.

Went into lockdown in stores -- in place.

Still two people were tragically murdered 45 year old Steve Forsyth the husband and father of two.

Who owns a marketing business in the mall and 54 year old Cindy and you'll.

The mall owner today was grateful for how everyone reacted.

It's difficult to see how anything good can come out of a tragedy like this.

But it reminds us is how precious we are to one another.

And this mall in suburban Portland is close -- the day it could reopen we are told tomorrow.

Dan Springer live -- -- outside the mall there and outside Portland what we were expecting.
