What was the 72 hours after the deadly shooting and a mall in -- Some gun control advocates are making a new case for limiting certain.
Gun sales.
Police say the suspect -- Tyler Roberts used a stolen.
-- ar fifteen assault weapon.
Some advocates are blaming the shooting on in part on the expiration of the 2000 ban on assault weapons.
And they believe this tragedy.
On May be -- turning point in the debate over gun control.
Joining -- now -- against the Fox News contributor for a political advisor to New Jersey senator Frank Lautenberg and Chris plant is radio host of the Chris Plante show.
So you know folks are looking at this situation it in the -- in Oregon it was an -- ar fifteen rifle many versions of the -- ar fifteen rifle were banned.
Under that assault weapons ban that was I think it went from 94 -- minute expired in 2004 are so we don't know this particular gun.
It's it's model was blues band but many versions of they -- fifteen were banned.
And now that has some folks saying look at that ban we're still in place.
Whoever he stole the gun from would have had it it would -- -- would have been their for the stealing your thoughts on -- Well I you know I don't understand even under the Second Amendment why anybody needs an assault rifle that you there's just no reason for it it's not a gun to protect yourself -- a gun that.
-- mass -- a lot of people with very very quickly and that's not good for hunting.
It's not good for self protection it is purely good if you wanna fire off.
A dozen rounds and in a few seconds or whatever you know the for the for the cartridges so.
You know what it comes to gun control I think sometimes got people who are pro Second Amendment and then I think most people in this country are.
Don't understand that.
Does because your pro Second Amendment doesn't mean that you have to take -- who says the most illogical conclusion which is any kind of gun.
Any kind of weapon at any time under any circumstances -- there needs to be some sort of reasonable.
Understanding that self protection hunting those things are not necessarily.
We used when you have assault weapons in your hand assault weapons are really in existence to kill a lot of people very quickly by -- Well I -- -- -- -- it's an intractable problem and that is you and -- obviously not -- people using our guns for nefarious purposes.
When you have this discussion but that but the discussion is all silly it's it's it's not an assault weapon if it's not fully automatic but semiautomatic.
It fires around that you'll find them in hunting rifles and factor in -- It just started up tended to jump into the different data that is an automatic you pulled on the trigger and the but the bullet just keep coming up that's what our military I -- -- -- I had to keep pulling the trigger.
And semi automatic you have to keep pulling the trigger but -- you know eat it goes pretty fast.
Yeah that's right one pulled the trigger one bullet fires as opposed to you hold it down and and you can empty out your magazine.
You need a special license for a fully automatic weapon the fact that it looks Jerry doesn't mean that it's an assault weapon that needs to be bad you can -- hunting rifles that have.
-- larger bullets that fire greater distance that pack -- bigger punch that have magazines that are comparable to or in some cases greater.
Then the they are fifteen or RNM four I was in fact firing -- -- M for an M sixteen style weapon this past weekend this past Sunday.
The one was fully automatic and -- was not fully automatic you can't tell the difference by looking at them.
But we've we've entered this area where we want to -- them and people see is situations like this.
As opportunities to try to ban guns that for the most part the people want to ban -- Don't understand the difference between Ghana and -- if you gave people a slide show or flash cards and said would you -- this one which -- -- this one.
A lot of people would -- BV guns that look scary but not -- rifles that are obviously much more -- -- -- let me ask you this how how much of this is an attempt by you know well meaning Americans.
To make themselves feel better about something we cannot control which is the deranged actions of a mad -- you know we did that we can't plan against that we can't control against.
So we turn to something like okay well -- that we can regulate you know we can do.
-- is this about -- or is it about genuinely believing that if we get these particular weapons.
You know ruled illegal I'm not gonna say get off the streaks I don't know whether the law would actually make -- get off the street.
Would make an impact I think your point is well taken but I think for advocates of gun control and I am one.
You know there there's a proliferation of guns that -- are so easy to get eaten that I've got a gun show and get a gun right now with -- any sort of background check.
And so the obviously fall into the hands of people that he should not be in the hands of and when you say in a blanket way no way no how are we gonna regulate any kind of -- -- despite the fact that obviously the Second Amendment I don't believe.
Was intended to put these kinds of assault weapons or even at this for large proliferation of guns into the hands of everybody.
What ends -- happening.
Is that we end up having just a lot higher murder rate than other countries where guns are more control.
If you look at what happens in Europe for example where they -- not strong gun control weapons they just don't have these kinds of mass shootings all the time.
This happens repeatedly is almost weekly now you know semi weekly that we have.
These kinds of shootings going on in at some point people have to stop and think and say there has to be between well meaning people both supporters of gun control and those who want.
Said preserve -- NRA preserved on raids.
There have to be some sort of understanding.
That we can compromise on this issue that just because you wanna ban.
Hi magazine cartridges or guns that use -- doesn't mean that you're trying to get hand guns out of the hands of -- meaning people but it is making sure.
But not if things don't need to he's -- -- -- matter because it's interesting that you -- in this -- the guys stole the -- so even -- no regulations no background check nothing would have gotten it stopped him from from you know stealing it.
But it if this type of weapon were banned would have been around for the stealing.
Well this one this one it may we -- -- know exactly what type of weapon was weather was covered by the the -- that is no longer in effect or not.
The jury's out of the bottle on this I mean let's be honest and and unless -- talking about having the government go door to door.
And go through people's sock drawers to get the old Beretta that your grandfather pulled off German and world -- to.
In order tally in a World War II that that it you know -- solution is not to -- this gun but not that got there was a mass murder more people killed on in this instance.
In Salt Lake City a few years ago where the gentleman used a shotgun and a handgun so.
If you ban these guns -- on -- next time a guy uses a shotgun and the same people come back and say now we need to band shotgun you've got to semiautomatic pistol.
You band does I -- get a revolver.
I don't even if that -- were at a time.
Thank you both so much for being -- thank you don't elect.
