Class of kindergartners we're going to discuss all of that because here to talk about it is -- Davis juniors from Dallas is the author -- enough.

And in DC Johnny -- is vice president Liberty University welcome to you both I know we're switching gears here because they were going to talk about something else but this.

Shooting in Connecticut really begs the question to talk about why.

-- would allow something like this to happen and Johnny wanna get your thoughts on this -- Connecticut shooting first.

Yeah I mean when I heard about it my initial response was it happened again you know unfortunately this is a generation of young people that this has happened more often and it should you know.

Beginning with Columbine and Virginia Tech massacre -- and it even earlier yet this year the situation theater.

In Colorado I mean it seems like this is part of the narrative of the millennial generation and I remember when I was in high school column what happened and I had a hard time sleeping night after night day after day this is a generation marked by these unfortunate tragedies and -- just it just hurts me.

Will come welcome first of all what are your thoughts when you.

Heard at this shooting in Connecticut.

I Loren thanks for having me back out honestly -- just heard about it and it's -- an airplane and walked in and got the news and honest -- broken hearted.

This thing is it's sickening words don't do it any kind of justice.

My wife actually witnessed a school shooting.

In 1978.

-- -- a classroom or a teacher was shot and killed microphone ever.

And she still deal still deals with its its most things you can't undo.

Kim -- you and god is gracious in it and gobble -- but this this is most things that you just you shake your head and it's actually hard to comprehend it really is.

It is not -- one of the things -- you that you are probably in Gillis is well all the -- of this as well and anybody who covers religion has to deal with this is well in terms of and if there is a god why would this happen and this in these are deep theological issues and it's very hard to talk.

About them win the event happens but walk us through if you could.

Explain to some of the young kids that you deal with.

Why this is.

That would you know first of all you go through stages of processing at that tragedy like this and in this initial stage this isn't the most appropriate time for those who are affected the most by this to be asking questions of -- Just because this is that this is the moment where they need one thing that they think they need answers.

What they actually need this is god I -- this question that has kind of been.

Around the throat of christianity for 2000 years.

Results of the center of a lot of the testimony of christianity and and a moment like this what what happens more often than not it's people run towards god they -- towards -- it'll happen all over the country in the next few days they'll be memorial services.

They'll be prayer meetings -- candlelight vigils.

And then afterwards you know and that and that.

A couple of weeks and months following is when people start asking the why questions and that's -- that's a different thing and they're good answers for that but I think it's important this moment that we address the other.

At the big answer for -- the -- It's is of course that you don't ask why did you ask who you ask who is in charge of this what do we know about that person and then -- -- two things and that number one.

We have to trust god in our tragedy based upon our experience with him before that we take.

What we know about god and we fill in the gaps that we don't know.

About god and then.

You know I I think secondarily.

-- -- in a moment of great tragedy like this we have to understand that you know.

People do people think this does -- say as much about god.

As it says something about.

That the people that can be in the heart of the human being and about the culture that we're growing -- that.

We if you if you are in Newtown Connecticut and where in this firehouse where of the kids were coming.

Escaping the gunmen in their school what would you say to them.

Got a heck I'd pull its many of them close as possible and and and the back of my mind -- have bet that Bible verse that says mourn with those who mourn and we put those -- -- and if one person suffers.

We all suffer and and that moment.

-- just make sure they knew they were close and knew they were protected and I would -- listen to them and I think that's that's what's really important.

In this situation or any situation a lot of times we think that when people.

Really kind of have a train wreck in her life for surprise comes or crisis or tragedy happens.

That what they really need his words of advice and that's not what they need they just need to know someone's close -- it that's what happens -- a tragedy happens you feel chaotic you don't know what's happening in your world you just want to be safe.

And that's what I would -- you know I'm a pastor are pestering them right now I just I just get him as close as possible let him say whatever they want cry as much as they want.

And make sure that I'm weeping with them.

You know will I -- -- I'm not trying to -- sort of dove tail you were.

You were eastbound Lanka which is -- the simplicity into that tragedy tied into in some way but.

In some kind of -- way.

Is our obsession with war and war and less about come just.

The simple things of life does -- to how much does that contribute to.

You know perhaps something like this happening and I know this is a big big -- but I'm just trying to make sense of -- -- in in in a certain way.

Well Lauren first -- you know academics and set it this is a big one and it.

Your your other guest nailed it it's gonna take a lot of time to process and -- through and arrest awaiting cry over and get angry at.

That's just part of process that takes a lot a lot of time.

But I do you think you raise a great point and that this kind of thing sure does bring perspective in -- -- -- we get really wrapped up in chasing stuff and a lot times we put behind us the significance of a relationship.

For the sake of something more or something that's artificial and -- giving ourselves to people we give things to people.

And this event and even -- out this event this coming year is a great idea to push back and say look let me remind myself what really matters and more -- who really matters.

And love them and -- the best of me not some superficial thing given time.

Say worse to them every day that -- because you never know if you're gonna see him again or not.

And never prioritize a -- or object over -- person.

And this kind of shooting Paula does remind us that you never know you've got to live every day as -- it could be your last visit might be.

We go low fully and give away your life as best you can.

An honor -- best you can because.

You never know its last chance you have to level of -- You know John and it appears and I want to make sure that that purposes it.

News story yet but it appears an entire class of kindergartners is -- -- for which means those were the victims those eighteen children.

That are dead perhaps are all part of one class.

What kind of evil.

Is -- they -- that would choose such.

An innocent group.

I'm a human beings if children are the most honest I don't know who is and what kind of evil does this.

I think.

I think it's a very difficult question to answer because we all know evil we see it that we don't know always how to identify it and we don't know what necessarily leads to it.

But but we know what will we see and that's what we're that's what we're seeing.

Right now but but I also think that you know we're -- that we're -- -- cultural moment they had and 21 century America.

Where death has become entertainment and you know I -- purely purely speculating here and it and it that don't mean -- to do so and and making any kind of judgment but.

But woman -- -- in a culture where millions of young people the most entertaining thing that they do is gunned down people.

On video games it.

Even that's not even so much that I mean did you did you see the movie Hunger Games I mean -- -- -- that it was appalling to me and I've never in the books I hear the books are really wonderful but I.

I cringe at the thought of young people.

I'm seeing a movie like and then thinking that that's OK I mean for some kind of distance relationship the -- you know that's abnormal but yet when it comes to their didn't like that it -- what what is.

Well that was a situation a few years ago at one of these school shootings for the school shooter actually had.

No experience for the physical firearm he he had learned how to do this from from the if I remember that story they were like eleven and -- -- very young.

That's right and I just didn't K -- will -- Well -- with all due respect both you guys are missing the point and this is not about a video game.

Or our culture going downhill there is an evil out there.

As personified and bring this evil proves to me god exists this is not just the wickedness in the heart of man.

And there is an evil force known as Satan who is very real.

Very much alive and and more evil than any of us and comprehend and he takes great joy -- kind of event.

And the fact that this kind of evil of one human to another one -- to an innocent exist.

Opens -- door for reality bit that they -- spiritual forces out there that we can see there are big and bad and ugly.

And the hope against those forces is god and more importantly Jesus Christ.

And I think I recognize that culture and entertainment is about to junk I don't give me that point.

I'm blessed not oversimplify this thing this was an act of evil that went way beyond a guy with a gun.

Did -- Williams -- people are gonna really be able to accept that because as much as I talk about religion was should get to talking about Satan and evil and double to look over who would kind of didn't crazies on there.

Mean well -- it's going to be hard to really except try.

Well it's awfully hard it's it's awfully hard to explain to revolution.

This kind of evil men I'm evolution doesn't account for the kind of -- -- -- just got to harm someone.

For the -- -- sake of harming someone.

So if -- open the reality of god or any can kind of spiritual existence and you have to open the door for good and evil be all we can understand.

And every time this kind of thing happens is just a reminder.

That there is evil in the world is bigger than us and we can't fight it on -- we have to have god and faith in god to have any chance of walking through life.

Would you away in the midst of so much despair and difficulty.

And it and it it -- had.

Yeah if that you know of course -- -- agree theologically with you know Satan and evil and all of these things but I guess the point that I was making a little earlier it was just that.

It's easier to do evil things in a culture like we're living now that the resources are available to you and one of those is a very metaphysical one.

And that is that people that grow up in the developed world.

Don't understand death the way lots of other people -- -- and I've taken students on humanitarian and mr.

excursions.

All over the world and one of the first experiences that they have in it and that impoverished country as when they see someone on the side of the road that's near death.

And and I I have to nearly go into -- counseling session with the students because they're so under exposed.

Or expose an inappropriate way to it and so you know -- this and this violent culture that we live and -- you know the evil one is up to his thing that's a theological reality that you would -- to Christians and other religious people believe.

But it it they're just more tolls at the hands of people today.

And a lot of times it's a shocking experience -- finally -- death you know like these these people that buy this or in some kind of trance -- well -- -- -- let you get the last word in here.

Okay it's moments like this -- we need to pull back from the table and check our hearts big time.

I wouldn't get the debate was anybody right now especially someone -- what has happened over the spiritual realities of good and evil.

I think Johnny said it really well early on I give them a lot of love -- pray like crazy I'd listen a lot.

But down the road folks are gonna ask questions and I think Johnny said it again this is the moment when it's best to run to god.

-- from him the dust is gonna settle the headlines will change next couple days in the store will become less and less of a new story.

510 days from now but that's when the work of those who know if your god kicks -- we can pull alongside love these folks.

Point them -- hope that is bigger than you know god is always bigger than my headlines he still wholly.

Even in the midst of all this crisis and as the dust settles -- we can get that message of hope the folks.

-- give them restraint even in the most difficult circumstances.
