Reportedly children are home by -- just before.

The assault on the school now police are currently questioning his brother Ryan who initially was mistakenly identified as the shooter.

At sandy hook elementary school now police are in the midst of the horrible task.

Of identifying the dead that we are told -- will be a very lengthy process and will likely take until tomorrow morning this remains a very fluid situation.

With crucial pieces of information continued to emerge and our very own Rick Leventhal has been reporting for fox all days on the scene Rick with a very let.

Sean elementary schools are not supposed to be crime scenes but as you mentioned that's exactly what's happening tonight -- sandy -- where.

The medical examiner in teams of investigators are.

Collecting evidence.

And going through the gruesome task of identifying the bodies of 27 victims including the shooter.

Who shot himself after killing six adults and when he.

Kids inside that elementary school.

What we are now being told what I've been told by investigators.

And federal law enforcement sources.

Is that the shooter out of lands -- killed his mother shot her in the head in the hole that they share.

Here in Newtown Connecticut early this morning that he took the three weapons that -- -- A block.

A Sig Sauer handgun.

And eight and a rifle and went through the school driving her car.

The school where she apparently worked as a substitute teacher he somehow gained entrance to that school.

All through the security.

And then opened fire we know the police responded you heard the police tapes we know that they called in reinforcements as soon as they arrived.

And those officers didn't waste any time they went into the school they got all the kids in the survivors out of the school.

Move them to a nearby fire house which was set up at the staging area and that's where the frantic parents were were directed.

To collect their children and take care of their kids and get them home safely.

You know Rick a couple things emerged today -- one of the teacher's gone on record will show that in just a minute here but the school had recently added new security where you would have to be identified.

And then buzzed into the school and it was at that point where the shooter immediately went to the administration.

And what we learned was as restoring morning announcements and at that time somebody kept up the announcements and that's served as a warning for a lot of people in the school.

And a lot of other stories of heroism including the custodians and some of the teachers.

What have you heard as you've been down on the ground all day today.

Well we have heard that some of the children and adults in the school heard screams over the loudspeaker system.

Apparently -- -- shooting was unfolding.

Because they were coming over the speaker they were doing -- morning announcements of course but children and and teachers also heard gunshots in the school.

And many of them took cover some lock themselves in classrooms others ran for the exits.

And we heard stories of at least one young boy six years old watching his teacher.

Shot right in front of a man running for safety out of the classroom and bring some of his classmates -- he apparently -- friends -- a step.

I -- I read that yet yeah I haven't we don't and we don't know again.

How this shooter got into the building whether they -- him in because they recognize them because his mother worked there over there he somehow circumvented the security job.

Yeah -- Rick Leventhal -- we'll be checking in throughout the night thanks for being with us joining me now on the phone Connecticut state representative.

John -- -- us and his two nieces and nephew war at the school the time of the shooting mr.

-- thank you for joining us tonight.

From what I understand the community of about what twenty -- 7000 people fairly well to do sixty miles northeast the New York City.

What can you tell us about the community and and what you know from -- nieces and nephews.

Campbell shot expect.

You're correct it but it's this got a great count interpret -- -- Newt out.

You know I can't -- pick your battle actually last night last night and you know elementary school -- there I'll take out there.

That I attended elected -- is.

What -- the fire.

And and it is but it -- to get back to.

-- -- -- sort of stayed to their families.

And their siblings running throughout the auditorium.

And great for hours later than twelve hours later this tragedy occurred.

-- and obviously didn't have you spoken to any of the other people in town any of the other stories that we've been hearing.

Including the custodians -- here we have we have a teacher on tape that'll -- on a second.

And the lengths to which people went to protect these children was pretty pretty amazing.

It wouldn't do and what incredible I know one of my niece who was it is in the library.

And there were ushered into a positive -- protect them.

My.

Sister -- something.

But I don't think I could have done.

She was on our way to the school and error -- four boys and a girl on first -- running up the street but quite a distance from the far out.

Make you stop didn't pick them up not knowing what was going -- and one of the boys -- that there was.

From what it done -- -- government and its bowl.

And she called the school there's no answer call the police department that has put into that this department.

And yet he stayed with their economic that -- department had -- out.

And if they would have not knowing -- they appropriate is in the -- you know.

Just just senseless evil and thoughts and prayers hope you know from the country or are with you community tonight so thank you.

State represented -- -- thank you for joining me -- appreciate you being with us.

And we go back now live to Newtown Connecticut where fox news's own Bill Hemmer is standing by to give us the very -- latest details of this deadly tragedy bill.

Yeah Sean good evening this story is not even twelve hours -- you -- the news broke at 9:30 this morning.

We -- on the air live in about 10:15 eastern time.

When the news just started to come across the wire -- John frankly at the time we were told that.

One person had been shot in the foot is being treated the local hospital there is very little news after that not what I'm for a considerable amount time.

It was 45 minutes to an hour before we start learning more details about this and now when you go back and -- piece together this in your mind.

The reason for that is obvious now their word no other injuries.

There were just dead bodies inside this elementary school here in Connecticut.

And the police were then just absorbing this information and going through from room to -- themselves and trying to make sure that the killer.

The gunman was accounted for and no one else is inside we have been told now that many of these children.

Were told to close the rise.

And run.

To get out of that building.

And to make sure they did not look around the surroundings or where they were spoke to a woman about an hour ago she is a thirty year old daughter who is she's okay.

Which she told her mother that there were let out the back door of the school to make sure they did not pass by any of the dead children.

Who were lying there in the classrooms.

Where they have gone to school here on these stories.

Are just so chilling -- Well I am I mean I heard that we're we're learning about this news for the first time it just blows your mind.

That the level of evil that rolled through this town today.

It wait I don't think -- say it any better than that bill and the idea that some of these kids literally -- told close your eyes as they walked them out.

There were three stories that really struck me today that came to pass one -- the six year old that we just mention.

And literally as the -- -- -- he grabbed his friends any ran out of the classroom.

The other but custodians that was running up and down the holes two and everything -- -- due to warm people we have a teacher.

That would numerous stories of teachers that were.

Hiding kids in closets -- and everything they can do in locking -- the doors and putting him in the laboratories locking doors one teacher was interviewed.

By ABC earlier tonight I want to play that forty.

Lot of my students and others I'm toilet just I just knew we had to get him -- just telling them it's going to be okay.

You can -- RA EI and pulled a bookshelf of for a close the door in front of it.

So it was completely we are completely barricaded management wanted to did you tell them to be quiet did you.

I'm worrying about one and I tell them I told them to be quite a -- had to be absolutely I -- Because I was just afraid that if he did come and then he would hear us anyway maybe just searching the door says that no we just have to be -- -- quiet welcome.

And we have I said they're back -- -- and now -- into it for the good.

Don't get.

I think I -- just I wanted us to be OK if and I am so there's so sad and that there are people who who and the situation or not okay eight.

Button.

And my heart and -- went on to anyone who knew them men.

Was hurt earlier I think it's -- and shouldn't.

And it's it's it's hard to come to grips with as you -- this evil -- and these parents.

I'm sure many of them about pre Christmas -- for their for their little children.

And now the planning funerals and then Christmas Eve and Christmas Day is gonna comment -- and -- -- and have their kids home.

You know -- a few of the things.

We are just now learning about the victims.

In this is going to be the next wave in the story and if you think it's at now.

Hang on because now we're going to meet the people who were killed inside this this building.

We're told the principle that she's been the school district for years on we -- her name out because it has not been made public yet H 47 she had two daughters and three step daughters.

She -- all of them behind a husband George who -- a teacher in the district as well.

Tomorrow morning at 8 o'clock AM eastern time that's when we expect the state police here in Connecticut to give positive identification of the bodies inside that building.

I mention this earlier you know your.

We -- five years old.

You're 1011 days away from Christmas the year you're -- -- Santa Claus is going to be in your house.

In 1011 days and today the devil came to this town.

In this town has to live with us for the rest of their -- they'll have a reporting tonight thank you for being with us so we appreciate this is now the second deadly shooting in US history.
