And -- spend just a little more than 24 hours since the shooting.
And the Newtown police have a very long investigation in front of them as they try to piece together exactly what happened.
And why.
That is the fundamental question so many of us are asking.
Joining us with some insight into what goes on is such an investigation former Los Angeles Police detective mark Furman.
He's on a two to 32 -- so forgive them if if that sounds like he's delayed but that's because of the technical prospects of that.
But -- get right to the question.
Many people are indeed asking why.
What can you tell me about the fact that the police are now doing on the -- to investigate.
And hopefully come out with a conclusion wants -- piece together all of the information.
Well you know normally.
You have the same procedure with a singular homicide -- regardless of the public ever knows or not this is multiple homicide victims you have to document.
Each and every piece of evidence the entire scene has to be majored and graft and put on paper.
Much like.
Like Katie draftsman would create unique to photograph every single piece of evidence and the victims have to be.
Documented in their position.
-- it is.
For frenzy because there's there's analysis there's ballistics there's casings -- on the floor.
There's expended bullets that passed through -- that logs themselves.
In the floor in the wall.
All this has to be collected and documented.
Even though -- we know who.
We know the method.
And those have been recovered and it appears that no other suspects are or -- large.
It still has to be done this way not only for future history.
But this is the way it's done and sadly.
I think every detective and every -- that's been on the job very long and in any place where there's violence.
Knows exactly who or what it looks like and that is.
It was disturbing that it is disturbing indeed mark especially for these particular police officers and detectives working in that crime scene.
In Newtown Connecticut this is a tightly knit community very small.
The only balancing have a that was what that occurred was this past year one.
Throughout the single year so when something like this happens that not only shocks the senses but it has to cost some emotional outburst amongst those detectives.
Tell me if you can what might be going through their minds as they.
Continue to work around this horrific -- Well I mean -- the first thing now are on on first blush.
You know they don't have the violence this is not you know the inner city of Los Angeles or Chicago this is not something that's an every day occurrence.
So those initial detectives in the small community even in the larger.
Good community that came in to assist.
It it is shock and the first thing that they're gonna think of is is their own -- -- Their own children.
Their their relatives their neighbors and they're gonna think.
Of the future and they're gonna think of this president how overwhelming.
It is and then they'll they'll collect.
Professionally what they have to and they'll try to detach themselves and go through the motions of their job as best as they can't.
To serve the victims to to document this in the possibility of there are more suspects.
Or maybe to learn just exactly why this occurred.
Yeah and and mark as we've just mentioned in town is not a violent area and is this school did everything by the book it did it right.
According to -- Connecticut state police this guy gain entry forcibly.
So when a school list and everything right to defend itself.
How do you recommend.
Programs or some other sort of security measure could be an active.
To protect one once community or property or school -- -- movie theater.
From an armed and dangerous and determined gunman from forcibly entering -- Well if it's a shame that way it has to come to this but this school did quite a bit -- and actually more than the normal even more than the normal high school I would suspect that.
Every school should probably have somebody employing close that is a trained -- law enforcement officer with the experiences and and the maturity to be able to handle.
People and children in a way him and actually see a threat.
That's not gonna stop anything look at the president of the United States a Secret Service knows that they just try to reduce the threats.
But they can't stop the threats and they can't stop the attempt so.
You know that being said.
You know.
I've been in the country of Israel and I've seen how they handle security in our country.
You can't get into a mall without identification.
You know many places your vehicle was searched.
That's the extreme but they also -- eliminate 99%.
Of this kind of act I do I don't think there'll come about but there's someplace in between we need to be all right mark.
Furman obviously it may not come to that in this country is certainly something that will be discussed among -- lawmakers as you move -- mark -- thank you for that.
For your insights.
