Americans united in faith trying to make sense of just how does one try to make sense out of something so -- Joining us now some perspective on what impact this tragedy is having on faith at a time when so many people may be feeling confused by these events is Tony Perkins.

Who's the head of the family research council thank you so much for joining us today.

Good afternoon.

I know Tony it's still very early in this investigation we don't know.

The motive that triggered this massacre yet many are struggling because they feel their faith is really being tested when they see the most innocent victims gunned down -- What do you say to people who may be angry with god today.

Well this is this is that -- the most challenging of circumstances and I can speak his as the father of five youngest being five years old.

And and also having been a police officer and been on the scene of a number of crime scenes but nothing that would ever reached -- proportionate to tragic occurrence.

But you know -- this comes at a at a time when we we're looking in celebrating peace and joy and in the earth as we celebrate Christmas.

But the backdrop of that is the reality that god sent his son and that's what we celebrate your Christmas.

To it to redeem them.

And this this speaks to that issue and there's no explanation for -- as people search that's why the church doors were opened last night in Connecticut and cross the country.

For people to try to make sense out of a senseless act of violence and you know the best we can do at this point it's continue to pray.

For these families that grieve -- grieve with them into the nation.

And and I think it is appropriate to them and asked these asked questions of why but then I do think we need to be open to the answers that we hear.

The organization hasn't been immune to violence either one of your colleagues was wounded in the shooting attack what did you tell your folks at that time and how did that make you feel.

Well you know we did this shortly after that shooting which actually took place for months ago today.

We gathered our team together and we we prayed we prayed for at that point our colleague who was wounded we didn't know how seriously we didn't know how he was going to fare this he is.

Has recovered.

To the most part he is back to work but still has surgeries ahead of him but we prayed for him we prayed for one another and we we prayed for that this shooter and that particular case.

And I will tell you that our team is doing well.

Because we had that strong.

Faith we had that relationship.

With god as Christians through Jesus Christ.

And and that was that enable us to get through it and I I know it's it's going to be -- very different I can't begin to -- can be like for these families.

But this is a time as a nation.

In -- happens in every tragedy we turn to do that strong.

Faith component that -- -- the Judeo Christian background that we have as a nation our church doors open are people mourn together -- -- together.

But I I believe it's important to understand the the -- -- the thread that faith -- that that was woven through our society and how important it is for us not listen just in these times of tragedy but I would say.

It's important for us to return to that -- to prevent such tragedies.

Tony Kelly right here and you know the president yesterday address that very issue that you're speaking out by quoting scripture.

At the end of this addressed there at the hope that the White House he went on to quote psalm 1473.

That he will bind up their wounds -- heal the broken hearted what -- say about.

The president the commander in chief acting has been solar in chief and actually relating to scripture to -- kind of bring healing to the nation.

Well -- I'm grateful for that I'm grateful that he did that and I think it.

Begin I think it speaks to where we turn as -- people both as individually and collectively as a society in these times of great challenge when we don't have answers I mean who can.

Who can come up with an answer to this to -- a man goes in a twenty year old man and kills innocent helpless children you can't make sense of that -- In that what we can only do is in at these times turned our creator and seek Solis and ask him to help us.

Put the pieces back together and -- -- fortunately he will and I pray that as a nation.

We will turn to him in earnest at this time.

I thank you very much for joining us that with your insights today we really do appreciate it and we do know indeed there is a big job ahead as a nation just try to come together.
