-- on Sunday morning it's supposed to be one of the most joyous times of the year but families in Newtown Connecticut.
And really around the country are dealing with this tragedy and sadness though with Christmas just one week away how to as they restored to -- faith in god.
Joining us now spots -- religion contributor.
Father Jonathan Morris happily -- to have you here on this Sunday morning.
Have you been in touch with some people in -- town I certainly adds and I'm not going up there today -- at my own services here in New York City.
And seven tonight but when things calm down.
-- you and the shock begins to Wear off.
That's when more support continued support friendship.
Closeness and needs to be there and and of course I -- so many others will be there.
You know earlier we were talking about our reaction to -- Parker the father of young six year old Emily Parker who was his oldest daughter is three.
We certainly understand.
Him reaching out to the community but he also went so far as to forgive.
Explain to me until all of us -- forgiveness is so essential -- what it really shows.
Now in terms of his forgiveness -- -- we -- command telling.
I saw that interview and I was blown away and -- don't you guys saw that as well.
His ability to forgive is not just natural virtue of good guy right but he understands he believes.
That there is ultimate -- and that his guy and he said it's such clear and and profound language.
We all have free will.
We all can choose to use that free will and a good way or bad way.
This -- this young man he said abused his free will and then he said I am going to use my free will for the good.
When you have that profound conviction of who I am where I've come from where I'm going ultimate judgment it's much easier to forgive.
That's a gift to get the gift of faith.
And we should be praying for every single person doesn't have that in these tough times.
To get that -- because it's it's profound and wonderful thing what is the role of faith.
And healing from this tragedy and and it may be in preventing further tragedies around the country in that's an excellent question David because I think we can talk about -- our previous guest just talked about some of the cultural issues.
The an and I have great respect for the for James person who talked about that.
But in the end not one factor.
Not one single factor is gonna put somebody over the edge like this would recognize that is mental health issues recognize that there's like a culture of death out there including video games and other things.
But also when the soul goes dark.
When the soul goes dark.
That's one in those other factors begin to add up.
To something tragic like this that's all going dart and my in my opinion is when someone no longer has a purpose for living.
Is not worth that much including his own if -- not loved.
You cannot love and ultimately if you don't know that you are loved by god in my opinion then it's going to be very hard to love yourself and love other people.
-- that's a very good point because when you when you when you read of -- Understanding purpose.
And and which your time when is very key here because we've talked about a lot of different things or talk about evil.
We talked about psychological aspects of -- on assessments.
But if a person -- purpose on what their god given purposes.
They're kind of -- a law so went and then the darkness is -- yet and liberal.
All looking for purpose -- even I uses that Teresa Jones made it a big commitment I'm still looking for purpose you -- you guys are looking for purpose every morning a you have to find.
More what -- got one for me how should take care of my family.
I want my commitment that challenge to those where are listening to us today.
At this Christmas.
When we know these all these families are going to be suffering because.
They've lost their children.
Get down on your knees or some other pasture before opening gifts.
Before opening -- my mother actually suggested this to -- -- morning.
And to see a prayer with your children however you can if you don't know how to pray you don't have -- and I believe -- a moment of science of gratitude.
But above all to see you think -- my wife thank god for my loved ones.
And that's how we can celebrate Christmas this year perhaps more profound -- even than in the past and had such as some of these families.
We've been -- to do that themselves that's so beautiful -- -- you be saying in your services today what can use and cancer you know.
And I'll be talking about in -- differently than if I -- there in new tone to those families because we're a little bit distance I'm going to be talking about.
How is that possible -- -- loving -- all -- could god allow this to happen.
And a talk about the fact that got himself about his son to be murdered.
He stood by and -- As the earth was she -- A -- will be talking about that them with individuals.
And it because it's not just a question a message that comes and goes but that we have to deal with an individual.
So what what I'm hear from -- that is -- were at a point in our society where wolf Paul the -- talks on there will be perilous times.
Then them will be selfish end.
Caught up with a lot of I hate.
We we can do we have in doctor doctor -- the king said hate can't drive out hate only love can do in its darkest can't drive out darkness only light can do that.
Any talk about the church being the conscience -- of of America.
And the world yeah -- Kelly you know I don't know if he's a more perilous times in the past right I mean.
-- think if we have a government that is you know keeping order in general society -- have but.
I think in all of our lives there are perilous moments for these families this was the perilous moment.
For all of us as we get closer to.
-- -- -- -- going to be perilous moments and yes I think our our culture is more godless than ever before.
In the United States of America but.
It comes down to making decisions in my going to would joyfully today I think -- -- comes from a cut contact with -- in relation god and loving others and being laughed.
On time great to see you guys I think -- -- messages.
could see we're right back.
