Thank you let's bring back our panel now senior writer for the weekly standard's Stephen Hays Daily Beast columnist -- and powers.
Fortune magazine columnist in -- and syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer all Fox News contributors.
Okay Steve we talked a little bit about this earlier but you heard some calling for.
Gun control today.
You heard some talking about mental illness and how big -- problem that is an -- looked at.
Policy wise beyond this speech tonight because -- saying that really that's not going to be the focus of this.
Where do you think this goes.
Well I think we will certainly have big debate on gun control -- CNET taking place you've had people like Michael Bloomberg.
Who has had this is a cause for a good number of years -- jumping into the fray taking up as a cause again.
I do hope that we also have led to sustained debate.
About civil commitment how we deal with mental illness in this country and it's it's very clear it when you look back at the series the string of these kinds of shootings that we've had.
That our society has big questions to answer about how we deal with the mentally ill and -- dangerously mentally ill.
The people who what where there's it societal we don't want to call people dangerous we don't want to categorize people we don't want to commit people.
But but clearly what we're doing is not working and that has to be part of this broader discussion where -- Mean there is an amazing piece Charles that was circulated around on Twitter today.
The blue -- dot org I am Adam lands his mother and it was written by a woman who describes in very great detail.
Having a son.
Who threatened her and she had to deal with and if you haven't read -- it's it's worth reading.
And it's about mental illness in and how she essentially says.
No one would take seriously unless her child had any criminal record.
Well that's the tragedy look are you I was.
Many years ago I would commit people against their will from the Massachusetts General Hospital.
To state hospitals.
If there -- a danger to themselves and others it's become much harder to do it's not something any psychiatrist.
Every does lightly but of the dilemma for appearances.
Did you released terrible relations -- think of Jared Loughner the Tucson shooter.
Everybody who came in contact -- teachers fellow students knew.
He was not well and they knew he was too dangerous when student -- which he fled the -- -- she sat.
In the back of the class so she could escape -- case something happened.
And you've got a parent who knows all this is coming.
And he's told by the authorities because of the rise -- civil liberties and their experience that we had in the fifties of the abuse.
Of in incarceration and the mentally -- The where it becomes impossible and -- say to a parent until he does something or hands are tied.
And that is a terrible tragedy.
The parents are caught in an impossible situation.
And it is a decent until.
The Jared -- -- -- couldn't commit the atrocities.
That the state steps in in his case.
The stages -- family's apparent -- schizophrenic which was obvious from the moment.
He's incident happened and we don't know exactly that -- Lanza.
But it's a picture of the withdrawn possibly.
-- -- -- -- -- To video games in closed in his own world a parent clearly living alone with him.
Obviously unable to cope with a terrible tragedy happens and what's the first thing he does and that horrible day.
He kills his most businesses situation -- I empathize and every parent or relative Kuwaiti -- turned under the current laws.
-- Associated Press is moving story quoting me Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms send that -- lands.
Had visited a local shooting range Nina they haven't concluded whether he actually practice there.
But they they know that his mother visited shooting ranges several times whether she took him there to practice with her.
They're not saying but but he did.
Did go there.
So the question you know we we again we just don't know.
That much we know that he apparently took her guns to use to do this -- -- -- gun collector and an and went fishing with the Rangers semi automatic weapons.
I think it's really important as we move forward and that's I think what Charles brings up is absolutely right it's very hard.
For a parent to commit a child.
It and it's very it's clear from these past mass killings that there were warning signs we may find out that.
You may find that out now.
But the other component of this is the rise and proliferation of semi automatic weapons which seem to be tied to just about every one of these mass killings.
And I think we have to keep in mind and the body of a six year old these children had three from three to eleven wounds.
Didn't have a chance.
And I think that house to be part of this conversation.
You know after 9/11 we had a hard conversation about.
Losing some rights we sweet deal with TSA all the time.
We invented the government it it it surveil it has this -- bailed on us more than ever I mean we we agreed that that was something.
So we wanted to do.
For the safety of our nation and I think that's a conversation we have to have about -- we wanted to have a safety of our our children.
Right and that obviously the other side cares to will say once this happens it's in opens the doors to all kinds of things and guns -- Are under attack completely but listen this is not the time.
Really be having this battle but there.
It's like asking -- -- -- and it's -- conversation about that also the bullets apparently -- special kind of bullet that blocking a lodges and it is it's almost impossible to survive we need to look at why civilians -- to have this kind of stuff but I like the idea of the national commission on mass violence because it's not just looking at the gun aspect -- looking at.
It's it's complicated it's not just one thing it's not just the guns it's the mental illness could be the video games could.
-- the culture could be that the father's not around to can be a lot of different things that are going on here and and it definitely needs to be looked out there's no question.
When I say it's not the time this conversation will obviously happening in the days ahead but we are waiting for the president's remarks as.
