Fact evolve segment tonight as I said from the very beginning twenty year old Adam lands a man killed twenty children seven adults -- -- town last week.

Was an angry alienated guy and he may have been addicted to video games now.

Had I know that.

One look at the guys.

CNN reporting the people who knew -- -- say he walks a compulsive game player in his basement that's what he did.

Joining us now from Columbus, Ohio doctor Brad Bushman who teaches at Ohio State -- -- of the violent video game culture.

What's most important thing you learned about the culture -- But been studying violent media -- for over 25 years and have conducted over fifty studies and.

We recently conducted the comprehensive review of all studies they're 381 of them involving over 130000.

-- parents.

And these studies show that violent video games increase aggressive -- they increase angry feelings.

They increase physiological arousal such as heart rate and blood pressure.

Which may explain why they also increase aggressive behavior.

Because people who have aggressive -- and feel angry inside -- are stressed out or more likely to behave aggressively than those who aren't.

And they also.

All right now I know lots of kids who played these games and they're good kids they're normally don't act out they don't do anything destructive but they love the games.

The reason -- love the games because it empowers children.

Children aren't in control children are.

Killing the bad guys and and it's the thrill of the kill is right there in front of their face but then they go out in their normal Klein loving children.

So I don't think everybody -- plays these games are adversely affected by that would that be true.

Yeah of course not.

Violent and aggressive behavior is determined by many factors.

And exposure to violent media is only ones out there all right let -- let -- one of -- relative.

Go ahead it is affected its relative what that this relatively easy to change.

Some other risk factors for aggression like poverty and low IQ and being in now.

Are relatively hard to change that we can how can help your way through violence if these if these video games.

Are so profitable and you know they all -- All right day of making boo -- money for these major corporations.

Then how could we change that.

Yeah well that's that's difficult.

I think we have to introduce.

Protective factors.

Better parenting.

More supportive.

Home environments those sort of things.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Are you calling for this censorship are you calling for any kind of censorship of these games by.

The authorities.

-- a video games are very bad baby sitters especially violent ones and well we don't let our children drink beer or smoke cigarettes and I think the first step is to make sure that the games -- age appropriate so for example.

Children under thirteen shouldn't be playing games rated T thirteen thirteen and above.

And children under seventeen shouldn't be -- playing games rated M for mature -- seventeen and older.

-- first stepped pay attention to those.

You have been responsible parents Malloy actually do that -- irresponsible parents will not as always the problem.

We also have a declining confidence this is unbelievable in this country violent crimes coming down.

Is it's.

Even crimes against children.

Mass murders everything we saw Newtown Connecticut has calmed down -- And the reason I believe is because the mandatory sentences they're giving violent criminals now they've just locking them up forever.

And that has taken a lot of those people away from society.

But when we do see something this horrific in Connecticut so vivid and people get emotional about it are we overreacting now.

Well there are extremely rare and sense and I think most parents can.

I realize that they are rare events and is safe for their children to go to school that we shouldn't ignore these events and they may be signs.

The other problems -- need to be addressed in society all right so doctor we appreciate your expertise thank you very much play more ahead.
