Besides the looming fiscal -- the topic of gun control has dominated talk here in Washington and across the country in the wake of the Newtown Connecticut massacre Bret -- Sat down with two familiar faces to talk about that issue.

Wednesday prison Obama launched an administration wide effort to curb gun violence putting Vice President Biden in charge of -- commission.

To spearhead that effort pursuing policy changes now to talk about that.

Joining us from Austin, Texas Karl Rove former senior advisor to president George W.

Bush.

And Joseph Trippi -- democratic strategists who likes to point out he was right a lot in 2012.

Well look there's going to be a lot of interest in Washington given these horrific images in this terrible tragedy in Connecticut.

To do something and do something immediately senator feinstein's -- said to introduce the assault weapons ban.

The first day congress gets back in session in January but I think the commissions a good idea provided it has bipartisan membership.

That it has people's gun control supporters and gun control opponents on -- -- that -- can look at this as a comprehensive issue.

We've got to be careful about moving too quickly and yet we've got to have a comprehensive approach in the commission I commend the president for doing this commission.

At least if it's its in its membership is made up throughout wave could be a a powerful way to find it.

Really need some gun advocates as well as gun control advocates I mean from even from the industry I think would be a good idea.

To stop a monster from killing our kids is to be personally involved and invested in a plan up absolute protection.

-- they've always been strong players behind the scenes working on these members and the senators.

-- the line up punishing them that is and I hope that's not what they intend to do this time.

Carl what about the players.

Who will be involved politically here you know we'll look first vice president Joseph Biden -- -- fact that he's chairman of the commission is gonna play a major role but we don't know who the membership of the commission is going to be an end and how they're gonna.

They're gonna -- -- -- to afford.

In the senate which is where -- action is likely to take place first.

We'll have Dianne Feinstein -- introduce to you -- weapons -- but I think pro gun legislators.

Like Joseph mansion West Virginia Mark Warner of of Virginia are going to be major players because look at the majority of the senate.

Has an A minus or better rating from the NRA so you're not going to be able to get sixty votes for something unless you have a significant number of pro gun senators.

Involved which points to a broader solution rather than a -- solution.

The easy thing would to do would be past like the assault weapons ban but we have no evidence no concrete evidence that proves that that.

The tougher gun measures like that.

Are are going to necessarily reduce violence in the skepticism American people.

The starting their recent CBS poll showed that 50% of the American people thought that.

Stricter gun laws would have no effect on violence like we've -- sandy -- and only 16% said it would have a little quarter 26%.

So it would have a lot of those things but there's a skepticism about Duncan.

Crow laws themselves this a broader problem and we ought to address it as a broader.

Marco Rubio.

He's in theory he could be very important in this he's got a B plus rating with the -- with the NRA.

Hum how does he -- what does he did is -- for whatever the steps are to to move forward on gun control.

That that could be a big problem for him in 2016.

On the other hand if he and if he stays with the NRA.

If it -- they don't move.

If there's no movement from them.

And he stays -- think.

This builds up his NRA rating to for the primary.

2016.

Given that he may be running for president.

That may help them in the primary.

But with this environment -- could hurt him in general election I think and that's not just him it's it's a lot of these members you're a senator from Virginia Mark Warner.

-- -- you have step up lead on on smoking gun control initiative.

Again here's something somebody I think will do it mansion from West Virginia.

A gun in his dad's and shot.

Senate bill.

As a -- -- citizen target.

He's stepping away.

But it's going to be very very fascinating but I think they're -- will be whether they how far can they go and still avoid to avoid a primary probably.

Karl they're talking about it being brought did not just gun control you know talking about mental health and cultural issues like.

Video games in Hollywood.

But.

Really the focus has been gun control and policy changes -- -- now those lines.

Well and again if the assault weapons ban had been in place.

These weapons that -- -- of purchase where purchased legally.

There were not on the banned list.

And you know -- the assault weapons ban would have done nothing to keep these weapons from getting in the hands in this troubled young man.

Look there's -- a broader issue I mean this is a this is a horrific event it is -- at the soul of America.

There's so many innocent young lives were we're -- snuffed out and we better examine it and do so carefully and not do -- quick thing.

The easy thing that makes us feel good and doesn't have anything to do with with what limits and preventing the problem and or might even have a -- -- Okay it's Christmas Eve with our way to end it was this a naughty and nice list for 2012.

First to -- -- naughty and nice -- who's on the way nice lists first and who's getting the lump of -- my nice list to John Roberts in the supreme court for a holding Obama care.

With someone to give a chunk of cold to people on both sides who did a lot of name calling in 2012 election incidents.

Trying to have more civil discussions like it's like this one about how we can get to solve our problems.
