Obama is set to arrive in Washington within the next hour or so.
Cutting short his vacation to resume negotiations to avert the tax -- -- to kick in on January 1.
That of course is just a few days away and so far no word of any kind of deal.
Molly Henneberg joins us now live from the White House I'm Molly what do we expect today from the president.
Hi patty in the press -- was supposed to come back to DC after the new year but as you're saying he's en -- right now from Hawaii to Washington for any last minute fiscal cliff talks.
The president left his wife and two daughters in Hawaii when he left last night last night -- time early this morning DC time.
The White House team has been in touch with the top senate Democrat Harry Reid's office over the holidays.
And we did get a schedule update -- the vice president will be here at the White House today for meetings but at this point -- and not a lot of encouraging signs coming out of the White House or Capitol Hill.
That a fiscal cliff DL is in -- -- other any meeting -- with house Republicans.
No nothing yet although that can change we do know that house Republican speaker John Boehner is still in his home state of Ohio.
His spokesman says he'll update isn't there any travel changes meaning -- let us know of the speaker decides to come back to Washington for any kind of meetings house Republicans say they passed a stop -- measure extending all existing tax cuts.
And are pressing the senate to approve -- in a statement yesterday the house GOP leadership said quote.
The lines of communication remain open and we will continue to work with our colleagues over at the largest tax hike in American history.
And to address the underlying problem which is spending.
Now we just heard from the top senate Democrat Harry Reid responding to that statement here's what senator Reid just said.
So this happy talk that -- Republican house leadership said yesterday.
