You're steering -- -- your wallet.

Lawmakers looking at ring in the new year with -- my its tax now they say having drivers pay more for driving more relaxed -- helped rebuild our crumbling infrastructure.

But what -- mileage tax crumble our economy instead.

Hi everyone I'm Tracy -- in for Cheryl -- welcome they cashing in.

Are catching through this week Wayne Rogers -- and donate link field and I also joining us this week Julian Epstein and Carroll rob.

Well welcome everyone.

-- -- Workings democratic congressman -- -- an hour asking the Treasury Department to look -- mileage tax to help rebuild our roads and bridges.

John this is -- good yet good idea bad idea what's gone on here.

This is ridiculous this is a horrible idea it's the wrong -- implemented that electric cars -- decades away are some alternative vehicle to have a mileage taxes decades away from what we need.

To implement this and 300 million American cars -- -- dollars Orman -- our logic blogging down.

Demolish a manually.

This will cost consumers -- fortune for this text we already have a gas tax that is supposed to go -- roads and bridges.

That is what was she is -- a shortfall increase the gas tax.

They're talking about a a vehicle miles traveled tax.

Someone like me weigh in is drives so much I understand why.

People would want to charge -- more.

Well yeah I can understand it -- but John is absolutely right we already have a fuel tax semi putting that's something some good spots on -- dominant to measure the amount of miles -- goals.

And it's crazy now that's an intrusion on our freedoms once again it's another way to track people it's another way to look you know for us it's -- trouble.

Even got a fuel tax and fuel tax is a use tax it's already -- use -- the fact of the matter is they using the argument to say that.

We're getting that our mileage now.

They apple we have to raise taxes -- maybe you don't need to do so much may be the infrastructure is -- like this.

Maybe you can use total world we already have -- world's why not have more told worlds there infinite number of veterans is that there is a fuel tax that's based on them.

On Miley Julian -- a good point about the privacy issue little transponder in my car tracking my every mile that's a Big Brother lives isn't.

It is it's very Big Brother -- and John Layfield I think makes a very good argument against that.

The reason we have a gas taxes to basically have us funding source.

For hot in the upkeep of highways it's an important policy its work has been bipartisan.

Moving away fuel mileage tax I think it's probably a bad idea.

For number reasons one because we don't need any new taxes now when the economy is in this state that its end.

Other than the debate that's going on in the fiscal cliff of course which is another issue.

Secondly -- this -- mileage tax could disincentive.

Fuel efficient cars three there's all kinds of questions about privacy.

There's all kinds of questions about when you would pat when you tax -- -- congestion times would heavy trucks get taxes.

I think it's probably an unworkable idea which is why the Obama administration has distance itself from the idea.

John -- to see I have this -- but we had a six point two billion dollar highway trust fund in 2013.

That's -- -- to go to the roads at one point though it will become negative and it actually needs this fuel tax to fund.

It again.

It's not too long before goes negative actually Tracy's gonna go negative and 2015.

Right I mean big gas tax has you know been raised almost continuously.

Since it was first proposed durst first enacted back in the 1950s.

-- -- some states now people are paying 64 cents a gallon.

It's simply in tax it.

So why is it that taxes -- -- the only proposal from governor why not some semblance of freedom there's been successful privatization efforts of public assets from roads to bridges on down the line.

In almost every country except here at home and -- -- LaGuardia is the best example in New York.

Terrible airport all by the government.

In Mexico in New Zealand at airports are owned privately either traded on the stock exchange and helps the government and help the services as well.

Carol when I tell you I use the roads in this country I do -- -- -- -- I go skidded on two wheels into school every morning I mean I'm part of the reason our bottles.

It make sense that you would want to charge me more.

Yeah I don't necessarily think.

I think that the Linear solution to a very complex problem and -- some of the other -- said.

It it depends if you have a fuel efficient car depends if you haven't as QB but -- -- John and then why can't we be entrepreneurial about this why can't they.

Add some sort of value instead of just taxing I'm in Illinois we have a ton of vanity license -- if you add a Chicago Bears and a hello kitty.

I don't kind of license plate.

People we would be willing to pay up for that the why can't they offer at something that we would be willing to buy that would give them extra revenue and not -- take from us they can't spending too much time with entrepreneurs -- but it seems like a very obviously I think we need to catch a nice you know sorry that's I think.

-- -- I spent a lot of time and entrepreneurs to the problem is there's no other than paying for highways and infrastructure.

Is incredibly expensive into the tens hundreds of billions of dollars.

There's no other proposal on the table that serious right now privatization.

Is not a proposal is taken seriously for highways and infrastructure.

Buying vanity plates is not a proposal I think there's yeah you -- the basic structure but yeah you have to wouldn't that one thing.

Somebody has to pay for -- we want and -- He's -- yeah.

Hey -- good play just like to -- -- -- -- if you anywhere outs in the world.

Fuel -- campaign is like three dollars a gallon I mean Germany France Britain -- winning more than we do we really should.

Or is it a little bit.

I of course we should write it that if if that's the source of revenue you've got to raise -- -- -- even agrees with that we all agree with that.

But Jonathan makes a good point too if it makes sense why not read it well we have whole world's that they they're planning a whole world's all of the yield on the Jersey turnpike it -- -- to pay at all.

It's not a big -- so if you gonna pay that's -- use tax in itself.

The fuel itself as a mother and use taxes nothing the matter when that.

The fact of the matter is that about the bids for these rolled -- -- massively out of him because they -- politicized that's -- it cost so much if it was done on a competitive basis that was truly competitive it wouldn't cost so much.

-- -- -- It's it's simply not true that privatization doesn't work in fact it's working here locally in Chicago the Chicago skyway.

Successfully privatized electricity -- -- who pays for those who pay for are those who use the -- -- if for.

In a poll that actually reflect the maintenance and other keep keep of that asset just like every government as service that's ultimately privatize.

What you see is better maintenance better off -- more satisfied consumers and much lower cost to the.

Tax -- viewers are saying about you are talking about a privatization of an area that is extremely localized.

The only other way that you begin to pay if not this is -- press -- -- -- look at -- talking about.

If you do if you -- if you're talking about if you were talking about the interstate highway system.

Roads and bridges the only other way that -- realistically gonna pay for that is not for privatization system.

Is by doing what Wayne said is erecting toll booths everywhere and who wants to Uggla fight as a country with -- -- boots on every corner.

I like I Wear -- -- -- I want I want to go to John Layfield time you know wait a really good point about the fuel efficiency angle right.

-- get more fuel efficient cars on the road I'm not filling up as much therefore I'm not paying that tax is much there -- my revenue so.

Maybe this is a backhanded way to make up for that.

Well I think we should incentivized people have fuel efficient cars I think that's the benefit of this country and you're doing that uploading a gas tax -- there.

And if people are using the roads they should be the ones -- sport we are gonna have some problems nation we've got people lined up like Macquarie lined up for what -- we start privatizing metro airports.

I think that will happen but you cannot.

-- -- Every road in bridge in America.

That's probably have a gas tax I think we should have airline tacks -- paper security for those that fly I think to be driving should pay for the roads.

And at that gas taxes and -- up.

Raise the gas tax that is what is or is a pure usage -- Can't -- on the line picking up the tab for the roads in the end half.

Always because the government doesn't have any revenue it just comes about at the bit of a shell game.

But I think we have -- -- -- broader question and shouldn't this be what our tax dollars are being used for -- -- sort of the point of government to provide things like security and infrastructure it seems to me that this should be an obvious one but they're paying for however this hurts so out of money I do believe that the fuel -- -- a lot more sense than that mileage -- because anything that adds two additional government bureaucracy and infrastructure ends up costing us more -- the end and -- -- now how much you -- when the government gets involved -- things.

You know you don't live this the whole idea though of having a AA -- Tax that is on.

Mileage is crazy because once again -- gonna spend a fortune you talked about -- spending a fortune that they are but that's a lot but some of my very nice.

They that have been a good way to do this I think a lot of money spending on -- is -- Compare what you would be spending on these devices.

Could get somebody you know and then tracking people -- -- intruding again.

I would be on the ACLU's side here I would say you know you're invading privacy shouldn't be doing it.

We can put plants in the told boots and -- -- really pretty.

Thank you doesn't get married coming out with.
