Here of town hall -- kids in his hearing guide for small what do you make of the president's remarks.
Well I'm trying to figure out what the point ones I know the president likes to come out and talk and give remarks and he had his.
People behind him sort of human props if you will.
-- to say look I I understand middle class people and and their needs and that's political theater everyone does that but.
We're at the very last minute here this is the eleventh hour and counting.
And so we -- Republicans really and Republican leadership having to make a very very tough sell on the hill.
-- details still being hammered out we still don't know what's gonna happen to the -- for instance that's a weekly big sticking point.
I don't see the point of the president coming out and repeatedly antagonizing congressional Republicans.
I seemed to me.
-- felt like what he was really trying to do was set the table for the next fight in just a few months when the debt ceiling gets hit -- -- be another clip.
And I have to tell you I'm here in Jacksonville Florida I'm here for college football game.
And go cats by the way and I was in there are they telling -- -- -- -- like me but guy who they play a lot northwestern -- Northwestern Wildcats tomorrow in the Gator Bowl but.
I was I was down in the in the hotel lobby and Fox News on the TV down there and they were fans from both schools.
Ones from a blue state one from a red state sitting around and watching that fiscal cliff stuff go on.
And someone said.
What are we paying these people form.
And there was sort of a murmur of agreement across you know all these different barriers that once had yet this is absolutely absurd.
Americans have had -- yeah they've had it in what we saw today was the president setting up another fight in a few months.
Where he's saying always mocking the concept of spending cuts again -- -- spending is the problem here.
I mean -- and you mentioned that the group where did these so called eleventh hour now down to the ninth -- literally here.
Time is -- talk about these two football teams look weak and I get it I understand -- your contention with the president but.
Very apparent that we can't just say it's all -- the ball is only the president's court located at it takes two -- three here.
You know Ford 65 whatever people of the people they are committed to tango.
But let me talk about this and -- you got that the two teams there are so let's say those teams sitting in that lobby watching Fox News.
Everybody -- to all of -- by the way and let's say they're reviewing this bad movie as I don't think anybody would disagree with that.
Who do you think will come out the good cop and who do you think we'll come out.
I think that does remain to be seen at the moment it's very clear that the president.
Has a little bit of an advantage in terms of leverage that's been the case for a while the whole plan -- collapse a few weeks ago.
Really didn't help speaker Boehner as leverage -- all as a matter of fact it was Mitch McConnell the senate Republican leader.
Who seems to have hammer this out with the vice president Harry -- out of the room and finally something appears to be getting accomplished.
But the thing is -- are now let's say we have these tax increases on people making their families making foreign 50000 dollars or more plus a lot of small businesses.
That's gonna bring in -- may be maybe 500 billion dollars in revenue sounds like a lot.
But we're hearing reports.
-- from senator Rob Portman for instance and senator Lindsey Graham who is on fox earlier he said the Democrats are asking to take all of that money.
And refinance more spending.
I mean this this is supposed to be a deficit reduction and never.
And that's the part that gets Americans are like OK so I get a pay raise rates so what do my you don't save that money no I'm -- a -- to a what's the point getting the pay -- right.
Well it's it's like you're getting a pay raise but if you're already getting you increase your -- -- -- but we're in debt by sixteen.
In this part of the year European debt and then you add more debt to the -- -- -- That's right by.
Expanding -- getting that getting that raise it work and instantly spending and it goes right out the door and then we have a debt ceiling in two months on another giant -- another giant fight.
They were so tired of this -- you go back to budgeting we haven't had a budget in three years a lot of Americans don't realize that no budget in three years in this country.
How many family to get away with that -- businesses can get away with that.
Not like that's the answer just our dysfunctional government they you know there is a moments of brief remark in the president's speech that may.
Antagonized some house Republicans.
Let's take a listen for a second and we'll talk about it.
Keep in mind that just last month Republicans in congress that they would never agree to raise tax rates on the wealthiest Americans.
Obviously the agreement is currently being discussed would raise those rates and raise them permanently.
What do you think.
Mean there was.
That you cut it out right before there were some tepid applause in this sort of it was supposed to be an official White House event but it was almost a campaign rally before cheering.
What the president was doing right there was pretty much gloating.
Saying look the Republicans that they were turning Republican compromise into something that like you know spiking the football in their face while there is.
A lot of uncertainty still about whether this -- gonna get done what does that accomplish.
And all it does is anger Republicans more while this is still -- very tentative scenario.
Which is why I I go back to my initial comment I don't really know.
What the president was hoping to accomplish in a productive way we've got performance.
And I think maybe it would have been wise for him I understand -- use his bully pulpit but while we have this agreement.
In flocks with very little time left it might have been best for the president just -- To to keep his.
His thoughts to himself up for that for the time being particularly because.
His whole knuckles spell of trying to negotiate with the speaker Boehner went nowhere.
Now we've had a fair amount of progress with other actors let's let it play out at least but.
-- we didn't see that.
Well the guy you call it gloating with some might say in fairness that the president was reminding the folks that he won he has a mandate.
-- -- -- -- that he got he sure did win guy Benson.
I hope your team wins but it waiting in the Gator -- good luck thank you go -- thank you are -- happy new year happy new year.
