And back is a happy man.
And why would -- be President Obama returning to Hawaii to complete.
His vacation.
After getting everything he wanted and more out of the Republicans.
In Washington.
This power play.
And Chris are hello and welcome back and happy new year Internet.
And the vibe in Washington today.
Is it cinders -- ashes I think would be the one nobody is particularly happy.
With what came out.
Of these so called fiscal cliff.
Negotiations that raged for 57 days after the election.
Liberals don't like it too much.
Conservatives definitely don't like it and they're very angry the speaker of the house and -- very angry that the Republican leadership that allowed.
This legislation that in net effect increases taxes or -- -- -- go up for those individuals making more than 400000 dollars.
They don't like hit and everybody's and it pretty -- except for that guy you saw there at the beginning the president who jetted off actor's native Hawaii.
So here are some things to consider what's really in the legislation will talk about that.
We're gonna talk about what the consequences are for John Boehner and the conservatives -- talk about the other thing that happened last night which was they yanked.
Legislation that would have provided a free money for the people we're dealing with the aftermath of the hurricane superstore and -- -- But we'll talk about all those things we'll hear from Charles will have a panel I think -- in.
Good stead today I think you're very lucky today Internet.
And one of the -- things that that you're lucky to have.
Susan -- -- yeah she's the chief congressional correspondent for the Washington examiner my friend and former colleague and so Susan.
How can something that's called a deficit control act.
Increase the deficit will you please will you please puzzle that out forming.
It shouldn't be called Jessica's -- right now deficit you know.
That -- -- it by four trillion dollars over the next decade the congressional bust budget office announced that yesterday.
Further antagonizing.
Republicans who didn't like this thing in the first place so they did not pass it was passed mostly by Democrats and a few loyal soldiers who are willing to put it over.
The majority for the speaker that's just to get this thing done just to stop this fiscal cliff in its tracks.
So that the Republicans we're blamed for -- -- polls showed they would be if we just let the single on on people's taxes -- in the big spending cuts happen to think.
They've done this sooner.
I mean it to do a bad deal why wait so long to Tucson well I.
I don't think he's building you know hold out and fight for what they said they wanted to do for as long as possible -- would look like a full capitulation now looks like the held their ground for as long as they could -- and save America's from a tax increase don't forget.
This all happened on January 1 this didn't happen on December 31 which means Republicans can say officially we voted for -- tax cut.
Because the taxes are you -- up right so -- voted to reduce and for people earning 450000 dollars or -- or -- filing single 400000 dollars or less.
The question now is.
For slot at the start of the show you mentioned -- not Obama has a happy man but he he he's.
What he's doing right now is by saying he's happy and kind of declaring victory.
That's not entirely true it's a bit of a show because he did not get honesty he really really really really really really -- -- what was that the best yeah right.
This is a reason why they were willing to go these tax rate at any one thing or the other is they weren't gonna get those tax rate increases are they weren't gonna get the debt ceiling had to pick one Republicans are gonna throw it all away.
So what happens now well this treasury secretary's got a few weeks to.
To juggle the money around even though -- claims -- reached a debt ceiling there's going to be a big fight.
In February he it is going to be over two things -- -- borrowing money list and known as the debt ceiling and also this two month delay on the automatic spending cuts.
That are now hanging out.
There and the third thing is we're coming up in March is that on the continuing resolution.
That funds the government that lets the -- That's credit so this 33 things there as soon as CR that's known as his trial less significant of those three things they still love it could be -- every now and -- -- -- getting good at just.
It's -- passing CR's basically.
I think the bigger fight will be the debt ceiling and sequester those -- that it.
Did not good at juggling a lot of things it wants focusing -- -- -- -- the congressman's spokesman basically debt ceiling in this and and the -- is -- money so.
The question is.
Republicans keep promising -- that next time we're really didn't demand -- cuts next time next time next few little believes that anymore like a little boy who cried wolf.
So we're gonna get -- get away.
-- -- -- the Internet got me an -- and an Internet we're going to get all that stuff I want -- I want to address this question though and that is.
That said by viewer Max.
Says.
This deal is the biggest cartoon profanity indeed where the dollars.
Darted -- enough horse ever perpetrated on the American people Boehner has got to go.
And a lot of conservatives out there are saying Boehner is the devil and he's got to be ousted.
And all of these things and people are making much of the fact that the majority leader Eric Cantor who is long.
Believed to be salivating over the speaker's gavel.
That this could be the beginning of a rift and that Boehner might be in trouble when it's time to.
The speaker yes there's two factors that make.
This because should be interesting for saw this will -- happen tomorrow everybody tuning in tomorrow because congress.
Gavels in for the 113 session.
On the first day of congress.
It is mandated that the congress elected speaker announced not just Republicans -- -- a speaker because -- thousand cases like July 30 -- Republican delegates that will eventually be sworn in tomorrow.
The majority of them will probably go for the speaker there's only a small but yeah.
Significant faction of members who don't like him the big question is.
Because it requires the entire congress to vote for the speaker they need this special 218.
Number depict the speaker which means they can't lose that many Republicans.
They can only lose a very small number in order for him to still be elected speaker so say this dirty Republicans -- banded together.
And say we don't want the speaker let's just have the scoop.
It means he below sea for me you know because she can't win the majority to 8218.
Every -- and Democrats only have -- 200.
So they can't get -- what could that happen.
Could we end up with like a deadlock or -- well here's what happened.
You need to keep voting until you get a majority says say to the question tomorrow is are there enough Republicans.
To band together prevented 218 investor client another roll call vote.
That's pretty pretty rare for that to happen hasn't happened a long long time so if that does happen to be hugely significant amount watched take over the headlines.
But we don't know if there's enough -- them so let's let's look back is very -- historically.
When when Nancy Pelosi was taking her second speakership very neat when he 08 to 2010.
She was opposed by distant link maybe handful of members who devoted president.
Or voted against pick somebody else is being run.
From -- jeweler blue like six or seven and Emerson.
That's not terribly unusual we may see that would Boehner unique we may see those four Republicans he threw off committee voting against him.
The question is will there be sort of this conspiracy over the next.
24 hours -- bunch of these guys get together.
You know and you lose a couple dozen of them that's threatening his speakership maybe -- do it.
For one round just to make a statement -- -- second round pick and I don't know kinds of possibilities.
Much more to tell them you can tell is is obviously that it actually is what -- tell you we're going to let her do that.
I -- tell you just a few things.
A number one in this legislation the amount of new spending and I was just staying power.
But with -- written power play which could have simply for the cost of Twitter follow taxis are all 330.
Billion dollars.
In fresh delicious new government spending.
Is now available in the deficit control act that's truth -- part of that's been my favorite.
It's 430 million dollars for Hollywood.
Studios through special expensing rules to encourage film and TV production.
But lots of -- little spending nuggets.
In the air there's that that was something else you need to know that you are you obviously because you are insightful enough to be watching this and -- telecast.
You've already noticed that the looks that looks different now in the new year and let's talk about how you use it very quickly.
You can.
Chat stealth.
But to do so you're going to go down in the right hand corner.
Right below this window and you'll see here that the players changes sides.
And then the sign in window pops up to the right of the video window you just do it like that and then you decide and interject your jamming in -- that's.
And we will read some of your chest and it will be great.
And you may also notice here.
That tell you there isn't also lives section that's where you can check out other -- streams that we have available.
And we've made some changes to the schedule.
And -- but they're all listed down at the bottom of the page that you know what will be talking about win.
You love the Internet Internet because -- so gosh darn good at that we're gonna take a quick break but when we come back we'll talk about what Susan mentioned.
-- are spending cuts really really possible everybody talks about it Republicans made a lot of noise about it last night.
But come -- dude really we'll talk about that when we come back to stick around.
-- -- Permanent tax policy that then sets the stage for comprehensive and fundamental tax reform and then addressing.
Out of control spent.
And that was the committee chairman for the house Ways and Means Committee he's Dave Camp he's Republican from Michigan I engaging in -- talents -- rather like.
Magical thinking because we've heard from Republicans many times about how -- -- next that the big cuts come after this part and yes two years after two years of Republican majority in the house and kind of thing I mean that -- government budget to -- expenditures slightly less than they were the year before but in reality spending continues to rise.
And the trajectory is big Susan appreciate who knows that because she is the -- congressional course.
For the Washington examiner join -- you know us.
She knows that -- Callaway is a pretty awesome dude.
Doug you know Susan.
We had by the never yeah.
That I -- -- and political sides if all but now we could've done without that I hope they help me man I would say that.
-- I would love it.
I would love to have that eight seconds back.
We should point out -- -- that they are a happily married couple and that's that's so it's okay.
But ducks also are also Internet.
They see it in and it's -- the Internet the Internet likes that kind of stuff.
All right so -- here's the question.
Republicans.
Talked last night vision leadership and certainly the Republicans in the senate okay we gave the president the tax increase you -- but now we're gonna use -- fiscal cliff.
-- -- fiscal cliff the debt ceiling.
And other things to force -- What's the what's the reality of that how real is that reputation.
You I always check with the with my wife on these issues because she's been -- so long but it was going to be conjecture this and she can correct me if I'm wrong.
It is possible it is it is possible.
Did that cuts can happen and it's simply because the fact that that this extension of the sequester.
Will again run out in two months and given that the absolute poisonous.
-- up here between the two parties it's entirely possible that the sequester will do.
What the two parties cannot do working together that is -- affect these cuts are talking about it 10%.
Cuts for the defense the Defense Department a similar cuts across the government agency so so it's entirely possible but the but -- the the vehicle.
-- which it would have been -- Susan America about that -- -- -- -- Kyoto desperately love in mass correct.
-- we just went I don't know if -- if you guys have talked about this but that just an indication of how poisonous it is up here.
We have now confirmed this for that report delivered earlier by Politico and also by the weekly standard.
-- a few days ago after Harry Reid from the senate for a -- speaker the -- dictatorial we cities he's running houses if it -- dictatorship.
Speaker Boehner confronted Harry Reid at the White House some days later literally outside the Oval Office and this that you can go.
Do something to yourself which is physiologically -- ergonomically.
Impossible in the morning trade as well.
And anatomical impossibility.
Is this I say so and it's Harry Reid -- hit it Harry Reid said what did you say end end Boehner repeated the phrase it -- that's that's where we are yeah.
That's that's where we are until.
So do the accent and anger that's a lot has a lot to do with what's been happening.
-- -- -- -- And I want to ask about that -- this scene is so so road Republicans and Democrats alike.
From new York and New Jersey are.
Hopping mad.
Hopping mad over the fact last night -- -- Bill that was waiting.
To deal with the funding for the relief efforts.
Hurricane -- is that gonna come back up soon.
Is gonna come back up at the 3 o'clock this afternoon our -- -- producer appears told us that.
A majority leader cantor.
As speaker Boehner are going to be with the new York and New Jersey delegations to to go over this issue.
I can't imagine any scenario which is under which this -- sandy supplemental bill will not be passed pretty quickly obviously maybe not in this congress but.
The new congress.
Is gaveled in tomorrow and and all the need to do is pick up the bill as.
There are constructed in the senate from the last congress.
Introduced the -- dies it dies today doesn't have right -- I think if you hit it can't they just assume the same language and -- well again.
It's just -- -- another senate vote it just it takes it right adds time to the whole process but.
But a factory and admit that we had Craig if you -- FEMA appear just a few weeks ago testifying that FEMA has enough money to carry them through.
But too early springtime so what was -- eight billion dollars they had their coffers so.
For all intents and purposes there's no practical difference in passing this bill a few days from now.
And I know that this is probably very much what it's like -- the Callaway from.
Home.
Yeah action and it's -- as -- -- and tell me -- our -- goes on on -- -- -- actually discuss politics that's right.
Well done we appreciate we appreciate you joining us in your on your -- anybody home.
I've had a great day I could.
Could this.
Susan what's going to do what's going to happen just give us on the -- bill before we let you go what's gonna.
Really is a PR issue right now it is Friday you know that -- letting -- build -- though looks terrible and making it look like the 112 congress is gaveled out he turned their backs on these folks in Long Island with Pete king you know railing against the leadership.
You know this guy and he shouldn't get the Republicans shouldn't give money to -- -- and -- as as many Republicans are pointing out who are angry from New York -- that did Republicans have no problem in New York when they're looking for can't pay cash for another attorney ambassador to -- Today's meeting I'll be interested to hear what -- And others say when they come out there willing to do something different session today this is the last day of congress for a hundred Alonzo they can do something make -- pass a bill and and tears it did here's the problem the bill is his stuff will work on the senate side the house has its own version of -- -- less than ten.
The cost the senate it leaves out a lot of the nine Jermaine stuff so.
Trying to get a jump in and I apologize if -- -- if it's money for special interest for your algae I'm.
Biofuels are.
I'm not sure I don't think it's don't hears girl -- -- -- ever whatever yeah.
Earlier robotics world is dead or turtle tunnel -- -- it's very important to you and and we we treasure them all each of us so big many three Q3 he says this in the chat in the new and improved chat.
That you can be clicking on them jamming.
Is here's a question for Chris nothing really changed it it taxes going up anyway on all of us and they did.
Well mean yes and no -- threshold to be basically the president got everything you wanted to -- more spending.
Stimulus.
He got the tax increase on toppers.
And he got it in rates.
He didn't care and we remember this season.
Boehner came back after the election with an offer of 800 billion dollars he said.
Will give -- 800 billion the president taking 600 billion in new taxes but the whole point the president was.
He wanted this semantics sort of ideological thing that it had to be great couldn't be loophole -- -- he did say I raise taxes well -- and he really did it and so this was.
However much money is involved here this is a big ideological win for the president is that he's the first guy to raise taxes since George H.
W.
Bush.
That's right he really move the ball extraction and now the question is does this embolden him and reduce the strength the Republicans going for -- are we -- for more tax increases.
If you read today's who knows this because embolden him and meet Obama 2.0.
Susan one point over to Susan this is just great for us and our condolences about -- yeah.
Have a great day to thank you agreed to take a quick break but when we come back we'll get -- more of your chance in the new movie chat area we will do that we'll have a panel here we will have fun.
We will hear from Charles you should stick around.
Today's agreement in shrines I think a principal in the wall the warm remain in place as long as I'm president.
The deficit needs to be reduced in a way that's balance.
Everyone pays their fair share.
Everyone does their part.
-- our economy works best that's how we grow.
Mark my words you'll raise tax rates and you'll feel good because you went after you've got those rich people -- just said you work you campaigned against rich people.
And you've got enough and he whipped up in the country.
And you gonna get him you're gonna stick it to those rich people.
But guess what you may not get any more revenue you may not -- any more economic growth but you can say I stuck it to the rich people.
And that.
-- was two very different looks at the deal that was passed last night.
Waiting the president signature though -- flew to Hawaii which may make it harder for him to sign that legislation.
The president talking about his success.
In raising tax rates on top earners.
And that was Rand Paul junior senator from Kentucky saying you may feel good sticking it to rich people.
But it's not gonna do any good so what did -- this is power play -- point that out.
So did we learn.
We had 57 terrible days it was really the link list of lame ducks and it took all that time and actually one day longer than it should've.
To get to a deal that nobody is really happy about the president likes it as we said because.
He got a tax rate increase the first got to get attacked the first Democrat to get a tax rate increase.
Sends a long long ago probably you have to go back to.
Lyndon Johnson to find a Democrat won a tax rate increased.
What did we learn what does it tell us about the future you know who knows.
Bradley -- knows.
Because he is a former senior advisor to president George W.
Bush and he also worked for bush here.
-- the first go round back within the last time tax rates went up but I'm not gonna bring up and I'm gonna bring up old stuff Brad.
But he is also most notably to me.
A professor at the Georgetown University chasing young minds.
And Garland Nixon -- shapes minds of every age he is a radio host at WP OW he's a man of the left and -- -- it welcome guest here on power play argument happy new year here.
So let's start with you Brad what did we learn.
We learned that congress is dysfunctional and if there's going to be is dysfunctional in 2012.
As they work.
Every other year and now hopefully the new year we've we've.
Hope that they've learned their lesson I don't think so I think it's going to be a battle Royale.
This is one act of a fight back plays and played out pack two's coming up with the budget yeah and the deficit increase and let's let's see what happens we have a new congress coming in and out old battles to before.
OK so we learn.
So your bum me out -- what we learned is that who wore the same -- -- -- that this is that this is -- no I think he's on steroids OK so it's going to be works Carlin c'mon give us some good news don't exactly what we learned number one I think we learned that what used to be Republican Party is now a group of warring factions.
Who I mean I think it.
Obama look -- -- it's got.
I think we learned that the belief in Washington is still he can't solve the problem make it bigger.
And I think we learned that the biggest threat to our economy is the United States congress unfortunately I think we learned a lot of bad things and I think we're gonna continue to learn this lesson for the next couple months.
As where's the love -- mean come on this -- it's what's going on here here's some breaking news by the way.
Michael Graham he's a Republican from.
The State of New York.
And he is telling or -- program that he may abstain from voting for John Boehner for speaker tomorrow because of this -- any relief package that got scrapped last night.
And here's the fact.
Seventeen of seventeen Republicans abstain from voting first Boehner for speaker it has to go to a second ballot and on it goes from there.
That does not -- check what's that since 1923.
It's so well Garland talk with the warring factions warlords -- Republican Party.
How much danger do you see Boehner and really is -- is he is his views cook durable what's what's the story -- you know you can there's a storm brewing.
In the house and and the Republicans and the Democrats remember Peter King is is the lone wolf out on Long Island.
His district was particularly hit -- hard Long Beach Lido beach that whole area of Nassau county New York was devastated.
He was a guy who's in charge of Homeland Security.
And if he can't as the former chairman of the homeland come through come through for the people it is just you were -- Peter -- I've never seen more angry that -- interview today on Fox News.
-- the Democrats also are lining up.
They were there the Democrats were also represented people in the affected areas of new York and New Jersey they are -- And the fact that congress -- recess without.
Taking up the city bill has got Republicans and Democrats.
Just outraged and and I think rightfully so.
They should've come up with a way even if it was.
Twenty billion dollars initially to do something pays you go into would have been great but had nothing for the people who are suffering this is an -- So the president tomorrow -- we learn.
I learned about the president in this that we see good picture of what.
Obama 2.0 is what the second term Obama which is.
Do you want to bring it down the Pike County swat it right back it should be the Obama of the first term.
Which was in the end he would he would flinch in -- in the -- and he would give into what proponents want.
On some things I -- and this debt ceiling are we headed for the president says.
You want to breach the debt ceiling start shutting down the government be my guest.
Yeah I would suspect that that's correct I think he's going to stand his ground on the debt ceiling find out because the reality is the Republican Party says well we will raise the debt ceiling.
You know they've pretty much that it would be like shooting yourself in the head with the hidden because you had a headache you know an enhanced photos and -- -- and it's seven wins.
You don't feel pretty good -- I think yeah.
It would be.
Did destruction of our economy in the near future and the destruction of the Republican Party hated it and I don't shoot it's got to go live around here that's that's for sure all right -- there -- so you so let's get a forecast from those of you quickly.
Or for worse for the years com.
Are the Republicans want to break.
-- there and because the president as he looked like you want to really break the back the Republicans on this.
Work -- can they eat and you'll themselves again for the fight you describe -- which.
Yes there's gonna be a unite united effort now it's part of Republicans why because now we reached the did the consensus.
On spending where we're -- where you where there is no division.
There's got to be spending taxes yet there was division because -- that what.
What is rich what do what is the message to fifties at -- fifty Stewart was capital gains is it continuing the payroll tax cut.
Unemployment there was a lot of things in there but this is our issue this is our time to shine and spending will -- Sorry -- New York's upset with me so we have to go okay -- appreciate your time and we're definitely not upset that you guys -- time for us.
And the first power play point thirteen awesome okay.
We have to go on the hunt with Jonathan -- is up next I'll be back with power points tomorrow I -- be usually into the new year I promise that they'll be back.
And now as we like to do every day we want to -- use the word from our friend Charles.
When you -- -- negotiations -- Obama.
You'll be asked to give up your stored in your shirt when you leave the room just make sure you still have your travelers.
Looking at the bill that we got out of the senate.
They would travel anyway so this has not been in good negotiating session.
