All the late nights the high drama of the name calling.

The fiscal cliff was diverted and a last minute deal was reached but wasn't really a success and what is the deal mean for upcoming budget battles including -- Over defense cuts and debt limit.

It doesn't bode well according to Fred Barnes he writes in an op Ed in the Wall Street Journal quote the fiscal -- deal left Republicans despondent.

Democrats not quite thrilled and represented mr.

Obama's latest failure to achieve a major bipartisan agreement.

Having failed to cultivate Republican allies in congress mr.

Obama finds himself without any.

Even among GOP senators with whom he had friendly relations as a senator.

Now Republicans regard him as a partisan in the extreme joining me for more is Fred Barnes he's the executive editor at the weekly standard boy those are some.

That's a tongue lashing if you will with -- -- behind dirty your typewriter there.

But but but well it isn't it yes my question -- isn't the whole heart of a good deal that no one gets exactly what they want.

You have and everybody gets a little something and I think Republicans didn't get a little something out of the fiscal cliff DL.

And the president's gonna have to get a lot more than he offered.

In that deal an earlier when he tried to get him out a grand bargain.

If he's gonna have isn't a successful 2013.

We have the sequester coming up we have the debt limit increase that he's gonna want you.

And he's gonna have to give some ground just I think the old tactic which he may be planning on of you know basically you trash Republicans you rally your base and try to add to it and he added big business.

On the fiscal cliff issue.

I don't think that's going to be -- up the public recognizes that.

There -- a there was a time for spending cuts and it's big it's now and for entitlement reform and so on so I think the president's gonna have to rather than.

Go around trashing Republicans he's gonna have to try that build up some.

And -- It's an allies among Republicans and -- and build up a bit of a friendship and -- that'd be a lot like.

So albeit AA raised base if you will the president delivered what he promised which is tuned up.

Raise the taxes on the wealthy -- fill that the president now has that in the -- so to speak do you think that he is going to be.

More willing to compromise when it comes to spending cuts I know his early.

Words you're saying anything come to me -- those issues do you think though did that you'll find some compromise there.

I think there's gonna have to be some compromise.

-- his words were pretty tough you know that he he really -- Dumps on the idea of spending cuts but.

But here by not having any in the fiscal cliff DL he's gonna but you have to have some now look we remember a couple things about the fiscal cliff -- one the president basically got his way.

And -- -- Republicans didn't get spending cuts the public is in favor of spending cuts they realize it.

With trillion dollar deficits every year that we're building up a national debt that is -- -- harm the country.

Sooner -- don't know perhaps rather than later and that entitlements do need to be.

Were formed in some way so I think the president.

He hasn't been conciliatory toward Republicans I think he's -- to need to be.

Well a couple things there Fred and we -- we have some Republicans especially.

Some of the Tea Party members who were elected in 2010 they came in saying guess what at all costs will block whatever the president does the mean that's on the table.

However when -- also we also realize that in the in Vice President Biden was the wind from the party and who went ahead and and got the deal done.

Now I can tell you something -- all of although I'm very capable -- many times that let my husband do certain things because they're -- don't wanna hear from me is a woman pushing to get it done.

In the today I just -- to get a -- so does it matter coming up on these major issues that have to be negotiated in fact who's doing the negotiating.

Well it does to a certain point if you the president of the United States -- the president has a responsibility to work out deals to not let them.

Not let the economy had.

Sag and it and it cannot let spending be out of control.

That's his responsibility he can -- W -- You know farm out some of the negotiating but he's got to be the guy that -- is producing.

And I don't think bill President Obama has accepted that responsibility of the way he should have as president I think he's gonna have to in 2013.

-- he's the president he's the man.

It's up to him.

It's his responsibility end and I think he's lucky -- need to worry about the Tea Party people he needs to work out a deal -- You know you get half the Republicans in the house and and most of the Democrats and and that.

And that's a bargain that'll work but he's got to get.

He's got to get at least half of the Republicans in the house -- there's no deal bottom line you're saying he's the big boss so he's got it come to play ball with everybody involved Fred Barnes thank you very much.

You welcome.
