Going to continue actually on the topic of guns and then the school shooting that happen at sandy hook -- new ten Connecticut.
There's a very interesting.
Phenomenon happening after all of this of course everybody is as much more aware of these.
Of school situations of school security.
In one place in Oklahoma in the wake of the Connecticut tragedy school districts along -- -- Are taking a close look at how to prevent and or handle a similar incident how did they do that -- they do some drills.
And we've got Casey Stegall -- cued up ready to go and talk to us from are you in Henrietta Oklahoma does that worry are.
Yeah -- -- we're in Henrietta Oklahoma good to see you.
Happy new year.
Afternoon your -- it sounds sounds pretty intense what these folks are doing married in terms of of a simulation of of going through a drill this isn't just.
You know going through kind of a textbook thing this is real live -- we're talking about tells what's happening.
Yeah it is it's pretty fascinating this is day two of the trading -- we were here all day yesterday with the police department this is a very small community.
And that's one of the reasons why the police -- feels this is so important because I clearly smaller towns and and more rule areas -- don't have as many resources.
As they would have been in New York -- Los Angeles for Dallas and really Oklahoma schools have not been immune to violence.
A seventh grader shot up some of his classmates not far from here back in 1999.
No one died fortunately but then of course with the incident that just happened in Connecticut.
Emotions are -- still very raw and obviously law enforcement all across America from big cities to little towns realize.
That they've got to be ready but yeah this is as -- as it gets.
Associated with the school shooting.
We use force on force -- here inside this Oklahoma high school you look forward everything from sweeping classrooms.
Neutralizing a threat is being rehearsed that's what we try to get out of this train.
Is a level of realism and what decisions that they'll make -- and women get the call the chief of police Steve Norman feels this is especially important for his men.
Has a population of 5500.
His police department twelve officers total the New Year's backup can be hours away big cities just have a lot of resources.
We don't have -- we will never had to -- -- its security measures coupled with training law enforcement working in tandem with local school districts.
To keep kids safe.
It's -- of had in the mandatory.
Growth we probably should have some additional growth throughout the years.
-- should also point out that the exercises being carried out here are not only applicable to schools but other soft targets as they -- called.
That the drills that they're learning here could be carried out if heaven forbid the review shooting really any public place at a hospital.
A movie theater or mall -- I have to say when we were here yesterday there was this one element of surprise -- the officers kind of were instructed okay this is what we're gonna do next we're gonna do this drill we're gonna sweep this hallway.
But then at one point the -- kind of took people by surprise and an officer was hiding in a part of the school.
And there was a submachine guns sound -- that was going on and he was -- on lockers -- creating a lot of commotion seen coming get me and things like that you could physically see the of the look on the officers' faces it changed it was something that caught them by surprise and that adds this level of realism.
To prepare them.
If and win that call would ever come and it's sad that it is just -- sign of the times these days I guess.
Absolutely enemy and Bravo to that department for for getting out there -- doing this type of training.
And I imagine are there other communities that are paying attention to this type of training and maybe going to start doing this sort of thing.
-- Others in neighboring community that gathers a neighboring community they came over and enjoying this the fire department we should point out it is also.
Participating they've been setting up a mobile command posts down.
At the elementary school this is a small community as we have said and the elementary middle and high school -- all right right together and so the fire department has also been working down there as well.
And the chief hopes that other rule communities and really communities in general will take a look at this and and practice similar situations because.
We just have to be prepared nowadays.
All right Casey Stegall thank you so much for that great report from god to a terrific I have been to your photographer -- well.
Kudos to them because -- look really showed -- -- Casey -- joining us live from Oklahoma we'll see you next time thanks so much.
