-- Republican lawmakers are taking issue with Chuck Hagel nomination to head up the Pentagon but hey -- faces another battle.

From Democrats reports suggest that he doesn't even have enough support from them perhaps the president's own party to get through the confirmation process.

Maryland senator Ben Carden joins us right now live from Baltimore -- weren't concerned.

Its displeasure be within the morning it's great to have you as well I understand you've asked for a a private meeting with mr.

hagel because you've got some concerns what are -- Bought it up first I think it's important that the confirmation process go forward that we have an open process a fair process.

-- my concerns -- on his position in regards to Iran.

He has been.

It has not been supporter of -- action taken by United States to impose sanctions he believes that we should move.

Only with the international community.

I think it's important for United States to lead in the effort.

To isolate -- -- sought I have concern as to what -- he would be his advice the president regards to.

That very dangerous country sure it seems like he's reluctant to impose the sanctions on Iran.

Seems like he's soft on Iran but hard on Israel and a lot of people in Washington have that opinion.

Why I'm in my main concern is is Iran I'm.

-- I'm not uncomfortable with.

Senator hagel is an individual -- -- well what sort of within the United States -- he's a good person he he he he I think I believe he's pro Israel.

But it's -- it's of concern as to how he would advise the president on the use of our military.

-- in support of our relationship with Israel that is a concern.

Particularly as relates to ramp.

Also I understand you have a concern because mr.

hagel was apparently opposed.

To an openly gay.

Ambassador.

Nominee.

Back in the year and you just want to make sure what.

Well he's used language which I think is very unfortunate not just once but -- least on two occasions.

His -- comments about.

This this appointment is very troublesome.

Look for me it's what is his position going to be in regards to.

The president's policies of gays in the military.

How does he feel about that with -- -- -- would he give.

President.

That these are questions that he needs to answer to -- one of his other of the president's other nominees is John Brennan for CIA chief is interesting you know -- The president didn't nominate him for years ago because he was probably a little too controversial.

What's different now.

Well -- John Brennan has a very distinguished career.

A but I do think he was being part of President Bush's administration.

In regards to the enhanced interrogation.

Techniques these are issues that.

-- confirmation process -- -- questions that we asked so I think there are some questions he also needs to answer.

Open is a very distinguished career we know the president has a great deal of confidence in him you know one of the points is that the president's entitled to have his team in place.

The senate has an independent responsibility.

In the confirmation process so we have responsibility to ask questions we want the president get his team in place.

But we do believe it's important that people.

We had the information before we -- confirmation that make our own independent judgment as to whether.

This is the person should be confirmed or not that's the way it's gotta work all right senator Ben Carden.
