And that's is the sound of Americans exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms and this is power play.
And I'm Chris -- And welcome.
To -- big show here this Wednesday.
The discussion in Washington today is about a lot of things trillion dollar coins and debt ceilings and all kinds of stuff but the focus.
At the White House today is about this question.
About gun control.
Vice president -- by the leader of president Obama's task force and mass shootings.
In meeting today with.
Gun control advocates he and attorney general Eric Holder.
Are talking with them about things that could be done legislatively or through executive power.
To limit access to firearms.
-- mean time.
Gun rights advocates are getting ready for a major public demonstration next week of the support that Americans have.
For the shooting arts we will talk about that.
We will talk about the debt ceiling we will talk about how the questions on Ben Ghazi.
Will make things more complicated.
When it comes to confirming the president's national security team.
We'll do all that we'll have some power points it will be good.
-- wolf none of it will be any better I promise you than what you hear from Bob Cusack because he is Smart.
He's the managing editor at the -- you follow him at Bob Cusack and welcome welcome thank you Chris had -- been here quite so I said it first now here's the thing.
So something like.
One in three more than one in three Americans own stocks.
That's a lot of people one in three adults -- children generally that ratios are lower.
The but nearly one in three Americans owns guns but at the same time.
There is broad support meant that something should happen if something should be done in the wake of shooting that left 26 and seven year -- dead.
Americans want action but they're not exactly sure what it.
The White House is is going -- they wanna go for something big and that relates to gun control they say but also they promised went through cultural things and mental health issues.
The concern now among liberals.
Is that.
The blue ribbon commission approach to this.
Burns time and get you farther away from the incident and what they want the president to do is act with more urgency.
Where -- we released it.
Well I think there's a real danger if Democrats go real big and there have been reports that they're gonna go super -- that it possibly track it begun in America.
Reinstate the assault weapon ban.
That it could be some overreach here and of course that the gun control activists want to move quickly because the tragedy Connecticut just happened and in the more you move away from that the more.
It's it's tougher to get votes in congress but but the question is you know conservative Democrats are not going to be voting.
For going -- gun control I mean they I think they could get something here.
But if they go big.
And they take on the NRA and Republicans in congress -- been talking more about.
Mental health in the video games in and I think that that's probably their strategy because clearly.
The people who did.
This they think Connecticut Virginia Tech they're all mentally not well but.
What do you do on guns and and I think that's a real to be a real problem for the White House if they try to go date -- -- -- states.
Credit it's open.
Small or medium they might get it but they don't they -- -- their votes in congress now New York State.
Which in as big as it once was but it still I think that third most populous state in the country.
For for an -- Florida may have surpassed that but anyway it's still a big state it's still very important New York city's there.
Andrew Cuomo was the governor there is expected tonight in his state of the state address calls were very broad -- -- brought gun control its -- And the quote that he gave he was trying to WG.
DJ.
AM in Albany.
Saying confiscation could be an option.
Mandatory sale to the state could be an option permit and could be an option.
Keep your gun but permanent and -- segment assault weapons and we've talked before here -- we stipulate to the Internet especially you mark thank.
That.
Defining what an assault weapon and if you are shot with a -- you'll find it it was an assault weapon I am sure.
It's sort of like what.
What you call a hate crime.
-- definitions get complicated etc.
etc.
But you have in New York Cuomo who is.
Probably not coincidentally.
Each day a very likely contender.
The democratic nomination on sixteen yes.
Looking to go to do what they cannot do in Washington yes how does does this affect the national discussion.
I think so I mean this is an issue between sixteen obviously -- had -- an open seat on both sides so.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- I think undergoes a big issue now on the democratic side where yeah last four years basically act you know Howard Dean it was it was was not a gun control -- Harry Reid rated favorably by the NRA.
Rahm Emanuel wrote.
Recruiting to run in 2006 when he was ahead of the.
Rahm Emanuel when he was in the White House there's a book -- that show that he was furious with Eric Holder when he sort of document gun control early on minimum Obama administration so.
Obviously this strategy Connecticut has changed things but how much is -- change.
And I think that that's what Republicans you know Republicans have done.
That last month.
But you know privately some of them think that Democrats are gonna overreach on this and this did that help them.
Pushed back on the Democratic Party.
And when you see.
Joseph Biden Eric Holder and Joseph Biden is the most successful debut were you could hear it -- Joseph Biden is the most successful Democrat when it comes to advancing gun control legislation was the 1994.
Assault weapons ban the Clinton Era so what President Bill Clinton sold it.
But Joseph Biden kept it alive and moved it through congress.
As the head of the Senate Judiciary Committee in a way that nobody really thought he could -- -- thought they had -- thing done yet.
And he kept it alive and got it down when people thought he couldn't and then Eric Holder everybody knows what Eric -- positions are as it relates to this he's he's not he's not been shot.
Can win you do that and you put Biden charge and you have these meetings with these groups.
You see -- in healing the hardening.
Now people who with the beginning they've heard you'd like -- -- and you heard other people who were NRA pro war pro gun rights.
With the door -- hey let's talk about this -- whose doors have been closing pretty car.
They have to -- outpacing other one -- change his tune since that tragic day itself.
But are there enough votes to me and the difference between 1994 quarters and now is that.
Houses and Republican can't so they're not going to be pushing broad but gun control in John Boehner has enough honestly now -- getting.
Lot of friendly fire from conservatives.
He is told his troops.
That.
Behind closed doors.
They we've got to have a discussion guys but that is a far big difference between younger movement Sullivan -- -- the floor.
And you know Joseph Biden is -- -- -- -- he struck a deal with Mitch McConnell on the fiscal cliff.
Kenny strike a deal on this them and counsel they -- -- And then you know who else has mentioned running for president -- sixteen Joseph Biden has also mention running for president -- -- -- about points out.
The base of the Democratic Party has decided this is an issue that they want to add to address now and they -- you say what Emanuel and others did.
To table the issue.
In the in the drive sort of the Iraq War.
And bush late this second bush on the drive.
-- retake congress and get a Democrat elected they push that issues and so there's a little.
Cuomo Biden and others are looking to show that they're they're they're -- -- and an Obama has done nothing on gun control in his first four years and he's given -- -- buy a gun control group -- group.
-- and but he called that on the day of the shooting so that was later on so that was the worst day at this presents itself.
Is that doesn't have to worry about getting make reelected this is personal for -- I I'm not surprised by the fact that they wanted to open but whether they can sell and make -- popular she's still I think what -- -- you.
-- because that he was Smart and they're recruited probably thank -- about taking this.
Isn't anyone listening says and that's I it's not a double negative I'm not sure -- answer that but we are listening.
This is the do you want the lowest common denominator for the shootings most of them watched video games it's truth and yup they're mostly young man.
And then thanks Mick played the video games the that most of them are young man.
And there is a profile that is pretty clearly developed for these kinds of mass shootings -- males they're younger males.
They are they have been dominantly white males.
Except for that gentleman down at Virginia Tech big -- three Q3 guns knives bats cars the list goes on and on -- -- tools that keep that people.
Used to sometimes kill other people maybe we should ban people.
Well that legislation might do better than you think that any.
And -- the point says these gun control bills.
Are just loaded with pork that would include the Feinstein bill how likely is firearms -- to pass the current Supreme Court it seems unlikely.
Narrowly this Supreme Court is narrowly big -- said that.
Municipalities.
Anyway can have some sure that the government can have some restrictions.
But they struck down as you point out -- Chicago and DC gun bans.
That work that we're pretty complete that there is still some gray area here -- the proponents think they can get -- Roberts Supreme Court.
All right when we come back we're going to talk about.
Whether the president can actually just get around the issue of the debts you know whether he can steal a march on the Republicans and simply raise the borrowing limit for the federal government itself.
Or yes we will discuss.
-- say mr.
Krugman.
We will discuss the trillion dollar -- so stick around.
And that's is making money.
And this is powered -- that's what it looks like when the US mint produces points so they make -- trillion dollar coin.
It's maybe they could -- mean they could make when they said was worth a trillion dollars.
And that idea among others.
Among Democrats who find the idea of Republicans opposing a debt ceiling increase so ridiculous that they think they should get a little ridiculous their own selves.
So can the president as New York Times Paul Krugman.
And others on the -- -- just walk past this issue and not do is Republicans wanted to do and under the table and negotiate over it gets him increased.
For the new miss the tests please enjoy the following discussion and for the rest of you who.
Think about debt and spending you two welcome from New York.
Julie rejects do you know her she is a former junk -- -- in communications director -- a Fox News contributor in addition to that.
That makes her a Democrat welcome Julie -- Fantastic.
And welcome for his very first the big show.
If you will this is Javier Ortiz.
He is a Republican strategist at that could mean a lot of things so so this is -- -- -- meeting -- you should know this about him.
He is his didn't a advisor.
Everybody from former Puerto Rico governor Lewis -- -- and George senator Saxby Chambliss and he is founding partner.
With crane in crane console thing.
So welcome Javier in Q about being here with.
Here we -- now we know now now we know who he is you are -- usually so here's a question Julie Krugman today.
New York Times a a much respected man on the west said look it's silly to have to -- print a trillion dollar -- But if that's what it takes to get past the Republicans on this.
Go ahead and -- make it happen so that you end the discussion be generally -- call among many Democrats now is don't even engage Republicans on this issue.
Well you know let's say -- going going even further -- -- silly to me is that this isn't money that congress has already appropriated that all of a sudden now they don't wanna pay the -- that they run up.
Mean this is money that John Boehner and the house voted for -- it wouldn't be able to have it.
So prevents all of sudden say wait a second run at this deadly voted for we voted to encourage.
But -- now we're not gonna pay for it you know if I worded letter to bin straight now and go to Bloomingdale's across you know -- the park there and right up -- at 101000 dollar credit card -- and I said to visa and you know I'm not only gonna pay for this.
That's really kind of unseemly probably legal -- So that's really the situation -- -- the country finds itself in these guys went spends money that they all spent not just Democrats -- -- some of them don't want to pay for and I think that's not right.
But if -- had a trillion -- point she just -- let me -- to make change right she -- just she got it -- certainly do that I -- incident I think Chris the interesting part is that I actually agree with her.
The impressive the United States house.
Hat hasn't had a budget for this country in more than 1300.
Days no budget so we are running up credit card.
We are paying off -- The future loans -- people have not even been born in this country yet.
And yet the Democrats want to blame Republicans for this they're the ones that weren't Charlie -- that -- you this year for some -- -- -- that we should clarify.
We engage in Julie knows this even though she tries to talk about big ideas we always stopper we deal we traffic cynical politics only here's the question is.
Can president -- this argument is there a way that he can weather through invoking the fourteenth amendment war.
Telling Tim Geithner to get that platinum quite ready.
Is there are some -- that the president can skip past this issue.
I'm sure that he will find a way to skip it but we shouldn't it will be asked Julie said illegal he shouldn't be doing that he should be engaging with the American people.
In a dialogue that is about how -- we make sure that we secure the future of the country that.
Includes everyone in the process if the Democrats once they don't include the Republicans that means they don't want to include half of the people in this country more than half of the people.
Voted for the president but just by bit.
So if we want to be cynical about it than did Democrats are being being really cynical by saying.
Don't include the Republicans in the -- if the press if the president with the president or to do something to skip pats this whether it was through something it's some sleight of hand.
There would be a pretty massive freak out wouldn't that well it.
Click our president that that's obvious at first sentence they would be illegal for the president to do this -- that'd be legal for -- apathetic credit at Bloomingdale's not present and that gets out I know I don't think it would be legal for the president to do -- -- not a constitutional scholars -- -- person ask about this.
I do think this I think that -- the Republicans want to play with the debt ceiling again you don't need to pay a million trillion dollar coin you don't need some of the fourteenth amendment Wall Street's gonna take care of it.
Because the minute that the Republicans start threatening this again as they did last time.
Market's gonna tank the economy's gonna tank and all of their godfathers and Wall Street you know Goldman Sachs on down.
Are gonna go to him and say what are you doing here now completely screwed around -- our portfolios their own portfolios and the economy this country and so.
You know again you could only take somebody hostage if you're prepared to shoot the hostage right.
You can only threatened to shoot the hostage if people think you're gonna go through with it if you're really not gonna go through it it nobody thinks -- -- seriously.
But they've been very -- and got it right now I don't think -- got for you got -- the the godfathers of which really speaks at can also be democratic godfathers to both parties listen to Wall Street.
Don't you think that there would be pressure also for the president to make some cuts in order to try to get it -- He has to make cuts and they will be a lot of pressure from the people of Wall Street and main street.
To me.
Cuts into the government they did he just can't get around this you cannot continue to tax people.
To death literally and then expect new things to go let me Nancy Pelosi says it trillion new dollars in taxes why would she do with that.
Why would she not try to address some of the issues that we happen to spending so we just can't let look let's be cynical about this.
You know if if it's illegal for.
As -- -- for it.
Any citizen throughout the -- why why would not be illegal for the president for that matter for the congress to do that.
We hop to -- he's he's not going to be able to avoid.
The fight he -- to have it you know why because otherwise there will be.
48% of the people of this country that are going to be disenfranchised.
Being held hostage as Julie said.
But folks that what would like to do is run up the debt and not address fundamental issues that the country fast and that's the real problem and actually expecting Julie did a great job in making the point.
Four of the country that this president.
And the Democrats in congress are gonna have to come to table and they're gonna -- to address all the issues especially there will be cuts right.
Well you know again we're talking about separate things I don't get too high minded and the struggle a lot of -- our -- -- -- -- so let me just say this.
And I thank you you know and -- -- main thing but I you know.
It business sequester -- there's the debt ceiling when the sequester happens then we'll talk about cuts and I believe those cuts we'll have to happen.
-- we're talking by the full faith and credit of the United States that's completely separate topic and again look -- mix apples oranges here.
Also I guess tend to go back to my analogy earlier -- -- get hot here -- everything was legal.
Where citizens are an -- that I said it be illegal for I have a mortgage other people do to that -- I it's illegal to all the sons of fault on that data not -- it and you know that's very different from the full faith and credit and it states.
You can't make that analogy is so you know for me the sequestered so it's a cluster -- we'll talk about cuts I think those cuts will have to happen in some way shape or form.
But again let's not confuse that with the debt ceiling that is a completely separate topic when Obama voted to -- -- -- ceiling of the senator.
I thought it was a mistake and I think it's in the state today and let's not forget you guys aren't screaming bloody murder happier when Republicans voted to raise the debt ceiling for for George Bush and for all Reagan's.
And forever and for the first George Bush and I -- look look look petty partisan about this.
Do do it we have to go we thank you very much I hope you have fun shopping thank god.
Ironically they'll get right now I'm front right you only spend 5000 dollars it would seem like a bargain might take a trillion dollar point excellent -- a -- the floor -- at the sick part that right now.
The sad part Julie we thank you very much -- we appreciate you embracing our cynicism with such gusto today we really like that that's very good you thank you for joining us think -- Okay we're gonna take a quick break but when we come back KT McFarland she's Smart and she knows stuff about how things happen she will tell us how the issue of Ben Ghazi.
And the Islamist -- on militant attack on the US consulate -- -- Could affect the confirmation hearings of president Obama's national security team we'll talk about that with -- and we come back.
-- -- Illustration stonewalling the converse they're trying to get Ben -- and there are behind him politically and their rear view mirror.
And I'm gonna stand firm to get the basic cancers.
That should have been given to the congress months ago.
Well South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham he's Republican.
And special report with Bret Baier saying that the upcoming nomination hearings and everything from.
President's nominee for secretary of state.
Secretary of defense and CIA director are going to lead to revelations on the Islamist militant attack on the US consulate -- -- Libya.
This is power play now look when you have questions about things you go to the experts.
And our expert.
On all things national security is -- McFarland -- and welcome back.
-- -- The -- happy new year bring -- are happy for those nominees I think.
Oh well now don't you think they're going to vote now before we get into this before we get in this and there's two important things in -- -- -- now -- one of them is that you're gonna tell them all about this and you will but yeah they should now and it's very important.
Is that at 1 o'clock today.
They can watch your show.
Which is Defcon three.
And for those people who did not who ordered those people who are not gen -- like me and watched war games.
-- Matthew Broderick vehicle.
That means defense condition three when things are getting pretty serious anthrax you should watch that with Kati.
So that having been said.
What is going to happen when you look at at delay of this what what do you -- really.
I ask questions not just of -- eagle but probably even more currently.
The CIA nominee I'm John Brennan about Ben Ghazi Al what is you know why -- you think -- that brief the press I'm Ben Ghazi whose idea was it.
To come up with that ludicrous YouTube video is the -- of all of these attacks.
The American interests and embassies I just have been Gaza but around the world but I think Chris I sure hope they don't get bogged down in yesterday's news.
What I hope that any of these congressional.
I'm hearings are going to focus on is two things going forward.
Why has nobody retaliated against the people.
We know have taken credit for and masterminded these attacks because if we don't go after these people they will.
Come back and do this again that's what we saw.
In with the best -- bin Laden after the East Africa embassy bombings in 1998.
And the USS Cole bombing in 2000 we never retaliated we knew who did it but we never went after them -- Osama bin Laden September 11 2001.
And so they should be asking the question up all three of these nominees.
What do you intend to do to find those people who were responsible for murdering Americans attacking American -- what are you gonna do about it.
And I think secondly and probably even bigger.
Italy's why are we now two years later looking at a Middle East that is gone potentially from the Atlantic all the way over to Pakistan.
Anti American in economic and political chaos.
And with Islamic extremism on the rise.
Now but we know we know though in this Washington.
And you were here.
Long enough to know this these guys are probably getting through like it's coming out anyway hearing but they're going through they're gonna get our board.
-- is this and is this a vehicle at least.
For some answers to come.
It is and it's probably the only vehicle they'll have the Secretary Clinton is scheduled to testify maybe in two weeks but you know that train has left the station.
This'll be one of the only opportunities that congress has to ask the questions of defense state and CIA nominees.
Rarely do you have all free of those jobs changing places at the same time.
And rarely do you have a look forward at what the policies might be.
I think so in addition to -- gusting they'll also talk about Afghanistan and defense cuts whether it's at the state nominee or the defense nominee or the CIA coming.
As promised Internet KT -- just make you smarter and -- will be even smarter still if you stay right here and watch her at 1 PM eastern time on Defcon three KP we thank you thanks current.
Okay Internet before you do that of course you can check out on the hot which it today has an employment in for Jonathan -- you should check that out at the 12 o'clock eastern hour.
I know you'll like it I promise you will.
And that now how about some power points.
Serious cool -- those are that those are your power points today.
And the first -- different.
Money different money.
Is the fact that yes it is true entire argument this trillion dollar -- that paper money comes from the Federal Reserve those are banknotes.
Those are.
In -- promissory notes but.
Koreans are worth what you say there are you make them and they don't have to have to wait they don't have to be worth anything there worth what.
The Treasury Department with the mint says they're worth.
And that's why folks on the left and embrace an idea that was actually come up with as -- sort of a music by guys on the right what if they did this now people on the left say that they actually should that they because the treasury -- has the power.
To produce this point edge that they should go ahead and do it.
But here's your second PowerPoint no -- relief you'll forgive.
My point pond but tax -- -- the -- these these these culture if you will that shallow sculpture of the base that's on the point.
Federal law says in fact.
That all US points have to have a person on the front side.
That person can't be living that's true so who could you put on the -- there are a lot of humorous suggestions but the truth is congress has to approve who's on the point to even if Democrats wanted to try it or even if the Obama administration wanted to try.
No -- Republicans in the house wouldn't ever find any of the faces any of the individuals suitable.
For that -- eloquent and could -- it inevitably but here's the larger point.
Third point less and less we create all these clips we -- these crises we create all of these ways around issues.
So that we avoid.
Having to confront reality.
And dealing with the consequences of past action it's true both parties do it.
People avoid and avoid and avoid in the truth is the longer we avoid the worst problems get going both ways so whether it's a pointer invoking the fourteenth amendment or anything else probably better.
Go ahead and start fighting things out instead of skipping over them.
And those are my -- says and you know what I was saying but I won't say it.
And so those your power points for today we'll see you back here tomorrow.
And now as we like to do every day when -- -- the word from our friend -- He's using a guy who can defend every and I didn't say any items budget.
Because he's not interested in spending cuts he's not interest -- -- reform.
He wants to defend the entitlement state he wants to defend Obama can't even add onto it because it investments of course.
Normal people who -- do with college spending.
And -- a guy you want if you want to hold the fort.
In what I would call reactionary liberalism you've you've got the great achievements of the last century in.
-- building an entitlement state he's the guy who would defend the --
