United States is making slow progress in cancer research an iconic scientist.

In the -- says he's not surprised well Nobel Peace Prize winner James Watson who's famous for discovering the double helix structure of DNA says America is actually losing.

It's fight in the war against cancer and current efforts are not enough to change that in a highly critical paper Watson called out.

A one million dollar project into determining that DNA changes.

They drive nine forms of cancer he says that it's not likely to produce the truly breakthrough drugs that we so desperately needed and on that idea.

That anti oxidant -- cancer he says quote the time has come to seriously ask whether anti oxidant use.

Much more likely causes.

Then prevents cancer oh my gosh let's ask doctor David Angus.

It's not -- just -- the author of the end of illness he joins us live from Los Angeles.

-- -- thank goodness you're here there's a lot to process because.

Doctor Watson the Nobel Prize winner says -- we should be ashamed of ourselves how about they were doing in the fight against cancer yet as you know they're all sorts of other recent reports that say they were making great strides.

Towards curing cancer which one -- it.

Well -- the answer is always somewhere in the middle if you look at the death rate from cancer from 1950 till the last couple years it's only down about 10%.

And that's some winds in certain kinds of leukemia predominately we have not done very well at all and he's right we need to change our strategy.

The best way to treat cancer is to prevent it we have simple means to do -- but we're not doing it we'll give us an example.

So there's a 2000 year old drug that if you take every day and it costs three dollars a year.

You reduce the death rate not the incidents the death -- to cancer by over 30% all right I want all the baby aspirin.

Oh my goodness you I've been taking those for about ten years we've got some statistics and doctor when you look at the statistics they say.

After three years it cuts the risk of developing cancer by almost a quarter.

After five years reduces the risk of dying from cancer 37%.

And over six point five years reduces the risk -- -- to cancer by 36%.

Cuts back.

The risk of colon lung.

And prostate cancer by 46% but you know what doctor when you when you look at that and and that is you know that's very strong evidence.

There are always people to go but I'd take -- -- I've heard it might cause bleeding inside I'm just not interest in that.

Listen they're always side effects that anything you do that these are the studies that show dramatic effects on the positive side.

And so if I'm the government dictating research in our country I think this is what doctor Watson alluded to.

Somehow cancer changes you I mean -- changes use of the cancer doesn't want to grow.

Shouldn't we be doing more research on how to take away the side effects how to make it better.

Yes and doctor -- is -- talked.

About antioxidants we've all -- -- They you must pump your body full of antioxidants in my book there -- always I've got lots of there are lots antioxidants we eat them all the time because we here.

Did that cuts down our cancer risk why does doctor Watson think that that's all nonsense.

Because -- looked at the data so the government did it 245.

Million dollar study where they took command and they said.

Take vitamin.

16%.

Smokers and former smokers who were given beta carotene or vitamin LA to prevent lung cancer had a much higher death rate and increased lung cancer.

There is yet to be a positive studies showing antioxidants works sure.

Doctor Watson -- great Nobel laureate and -- -- paper by saying.

He should be blueberries because you liked them not because there's a health.

And I think that's a good point and I I'm sure after watching this doctor a lot of people are gonna say OK -- should start taking a baby have aspirin 81 milligrams a day they should probably check with their doctor first.

And and no question.

Everything's sacred doctor first all right very good doctor David -- -- joining us from the City of Angels he's the first person up out in LA today doctor thank you very much for -- -- Thank you guys' -- at --
