The former governor of New Mexico Bill Richardson is back in the United States if he made a trip to North Korea with the Google chairman Eric Schmidt.

The state department -- criticize the trip is on helpful basically told don't go there when anyway while the pair describe the voyage -- a private humanitarian mission.

They pushed North Korea to stop missile launchers and a nuclear test they tell us and they called on the regime to allow more cell phones and Internet access and -- Governor Richards and also told the Associated Press that he asked for fair and humane treatment for an American citizen detained in North Korea but it never gets talked -- that citizen.

Governor Richardson joins us now he's also the former energy secretary the former US ambassador to United Nations good afternoon.

-- Fellowship nice to be with you what you accomplished.

Well three things you mentioned of one I think.

Very few talked to the north Koreans we pushed for a moratorium.

On missile launches on nuclear tests we pushed hard on the American detain me.

That he get fair treatment we were surety get.

Console or access that judicial proceedings.

On a more start soon hopefully to send him home.

And then lastly what I think was the most valuable was getting on wide spread North Korean television.

Advocating for the Internet this is something that.

Does not exist much in North Korea.

That should be pushed.

More mobile technology cell phones but especially the Internet if you know what happened.

In the Arab Spring it was Twitter and FaceBook and social media that.

Move that country to move those countries in the Arab Spring towards.

More democracy and more liberation so big was a successful trip.

You don't want to call -- the younger though right how far up the food today did you get.

Well we got pretty far off -- the Foreign Ministry foreign minister in the Foreign Ministry we we talked to the chief nuclear negotiator.

The guy that deals mostly with the six party countries in Asia and the United States.

But nobody talks to them they're isolated.

And I think what was valuable was that.

We got to send some very tough messages and the fact that Eric Schmidt of Google was -- Google is huge in North Korea.

People want the Internet they want that freedom and the fact that they saw him and he was able to.

Talk about.

Internet expansion in North Korea.

When the country is very close.

I think was a very good -- governor did you receive compensation -- consulting fees or anything from Google for this -- or anyone associated with Google.

No not at all not at all we each paid for our own trip.

IA invited.

Eric Schmidt to -- it wasn't a global trip it was basically.

You know as you know I've been going to North Korea for quite awhile I've had success getting.

American soldiers the remains of our military back.

American prisoners back this thing I'd hardly call that on helpful and ask you not to do it what did you.

Well because -- a private citizen and I I don't work for the State Department.

I think get their their concern was understandable -- a relationship.

With North Korea is very very.

Very bad.

What I had -- helped a -- -- is there enough food and power as far as you can tell at least for.

I mean yeah I -- understand what the places like.

Well it's like you said -- stepped into what time -- into the fifties.

There's no heat -- -- you saw us in those videos going to schools to.

Software places to know he anywhere rules no there's no heat hardly anywhere so that's why we -- -- was around looking at things he was wearing coats all the time.

And we were all Wear coats and a lot of the kids the students work -- The country is in bad shape and what we're trying to do is send the message don't spend your money on missiles and the military spend it on the economy.

On a free market.

Move forward to.

Give your people more of an opportunity through and I think that message was heard because nobody talks to these guys and it doesn't make sense -- -- away.

Countries -- have like North Korea.

Fortified nuclear weapons a million and a half men and arms missiles.

I think it's better to to bring him in and talked a woman.

And and try to negotiate Wear them.

Again they're tough they're unpredictable.

They don't always keep their word but.

To isolate him I don't think works all right governor Richards and interest and thank you.
