Some brand new developments in the gun control debate.

Now that the president has vice president Biden's recommendations on reducing violence mr.

Obama set to announce his proposals.

Reports say those could come as early as tomorrow.

The president reportedly is weighing nineteen steps he could dig through executive order -- without congressional approval.

But that is sparking controversy and major push back from Republicans like congressman John Fleming of Louisiana who says quote.

If President Obama tries to use executive orders to challenge the fundamental protections of the Second Amendment he will face strong opposition.

While the president is welcome to offer his ideas and proposals it is up to congress to address address gun legislation.

And I urge President Obama to remember that distinction.

Joining us now AB Stoddard associate editor and columnist at the hills so there are there are a number of proposals that of the -- president apparently is considering.

What could he actually accomplished through executive action AB.

Well.

What he he is hoping basically -- to tighten laws many of the laws that are on the books already having to do with background checks.

-- -- that is not that power grab that opponents.

Of gun control.

And the president's plans fear.

They're not going to try to do any mandates -- bands which is within the -- the power of the congress and will require legislation and votes by both chambers.

He is talking about.

Looking at tightening existing restrictions on team -- of guns from other countries.

Promoting.

Conducting research on gun violence.

Prosecuting people who.

Engage in fraud and background checks lie in background checks.

And did things like this new information sharing across the federal government local and state about mental health records this is the kind of thing that is not.

Going to take away anybody's guns or their lawful rights to own them and -- -- executive power grab is not on its way.

Well -- -- there are a lot of people who are are very frightened about that possibility I mean look at filled the lines of gun dealers right now there are a lot of Americans out there.

Who own guns who think the President Obama wants to take them away.

Well that's true and we act as we've talked about before we're -- out an incredible swelling not only in the purchasing of guns that in the in NRA membership as well I think that there is an expected.

An expectation on that part of the administration at the national rifle association's power is going to be quite.

Up formidable -- that they are not going to be able to pass everything in our legislative package which as you mentioned is going to be outlining specifics.

As soon it will include an assault weapons ban it will include.

Restrictions on magazine clips -- high capacity ammunition that is the kind of thing that we fought hard by the NRA.

And it doesn't have good prospects in the congress the White House doesn't expect an assault weapon.

To bad that they had to pass but it's going to included in the schools because they want to include everything in its -- I think what they're expecting in the end to find consensus on.

Is more like -- said consensus and cooperation.

In the area of background checks and screening -- before the -- got their purchases may be the closing of the gun show loophole so that.

People engaging in private sales and buying guns at.

That shows are are going to opted to undergo background checks.

That is something if you look and polling is popular even with NRA membership whether or not.

The leadership is gonna fight it from the -- is another question all right AB Stoddard from the hill AB thanks for being with us.

Thank you.
