Controversial energy drinks are sending many more Americans to the hospital in fact the number of emergency room visits tied to the -- is.

As recently doubled from ten to 20000.

Over just one year.

That is according to a newly released government survey shows most of those cases involve teenagers or young adults.

The feds have -- the monster energy drink to at least five deaths.

And we have reported on this program that parents of a fourteen year old girl have sued monster they say the teen died of cardiac arrest after downing.

Just two of the drinks in 24 hours.

But the American beverage association's slam this latest survey saying quoting here.

This report does not share information about the overall health of those who may have consumed energy drinks or what symptoms.

Brought them to the ER in the first place joining us now primary care physician doctor Keri Peterson and doctor Peterson.

I was shocked when I heard ten to 20000.

Over a year it seems excessive to me it.

Is -- definitely a problem that this nation should be concerned with the survey looked at patients.

Between 2007.

And 2011.

At about 230 hospitals across the country.

And they found during that time the number of patients who sought care in the emergency room doubled from 101000.

220000.

The concern is also that these are and he mentions teens and adults.

And even more concerning is that it found that 42%.

Of these teens or young adults were combining the energy drinks with alcohol or other drugs.

-- it is certainly something that needs to be looked into more thoroughly.

And I think that's the big point there because really I mean look you can go down to Starbucks and get to those -- -- a lot tees and you got a lot more caffeine -- -- -- -- these things but that's not mixing them a lot of alcohol and not -- and several throughout the night.

So does the does the beverage makers -- they have a point -- doctor when they say you know we don't really know exactly what these people these young adults presented at the emergency room what other symptoms right.

Well they do have a point because we can't establish cause and effect.

How the study worded it is that patients who sought treatment had reported recently consuming an energy an energy drink and the emergency room physicians.

Attributed their symptoms to the recent consumption they reported things like that at heart rate anxiety.

And in some cases even a heart attack.

But the thing -- you mentioned that.

It may not be -- the caffeine content may not be sufficient or as you mentioned in the Starbucks to -- days but the thing is we just don't know.

Because these companies are not required to cut the number of milligrams of caffeine on the cans.

And there are a lot of aliases for caffeine that are -- -- that you may not even realize can be stimulants for example Iran and your -- Yeah yeah very good -- because you know we have talked about that as well as -- you know maybe some full disclosure from these drink companies would be helpful.

Would you recommend that your patience maybe steer clear of this stuff doctor.

And moderation it.

-- it what's recommend -- no more than 300 milligrams of caffeine a day.

And typically -- -- -- -- -- can have anywhere between eighty milligrams to 500 milligrams.

I would say in very small -- if you don't have any history of high blood pressure or heart disease.

It will probably be okay.

However certainly if you have high blood pressure.

Or if you've ever had any -- history of heart disease stay away from them all together.

And keep in mind that one can and may not be just one serving -- the labels -- not accurately reflect what's in it.

Based on drinking the entire canyon actually getting double what the -- says on.

I guess is the Carl Cameron is not listening this because he's got way more that.

On his menu doctor good of you thank you so much thanks --
