Don't -- -- you've been listening to calls to President Obama in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building that is essentially and annex of the White House.

In Washington DC and -- -- sweeping -- controlled proposals.

He said that now is the time to act -- you'll see him as he sits there right now.

With four children -- who were apparently wrote him letters about the need for gun control.

He is now signing.

23.

He said executive.

Actions and those include.

Great -- background checks putting more resource officers into schools if they require them making it easier for mental health professionals to report.

Issues that they believe any of their patients may have -- directing more gun violence reset at the Centers for Disease Control beyond that though.

The president said congress must act he wants legislation.

For universal.

Background checks that anyone who wants to buy a gun he wants a -- on assault weapons and on those high capacity.

Magazine -- he wants those to be limited to ten bullets and he said he wants congress to take action.

To enable law enforcement to bring -- back tough penalties for people who buy guns and sell them on.

So in essence what he wants to do with a four things you looking at right here.

Closing background check loopholes.

Banning the military style assault weapons and high capacity magazines making schools safer and improving mental health services as a whole lot of -- -- That goes even to those full.

Broad proposals of course we just got into some of it will get into a lot more of it now -- -- political panel joining me.

From Washington DC is penny Lee -- former senior advisor to senator Harry Reid -- with me in the studio here.

I'm managing partner of -- -- capitol Bob rice could deceive Bob.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- I had and I think the president has is is junior right oppression is all of the above he knows there's not one single piece of action.

There is gonna stop the violence that we have been seen in the violence today seems to be escalating.

Especially on the mass killings so he's doing all of the above he's due -- -- in the 23 executive orders but -- calling on congress he knows.

He is in a tough tough political fight.

But he is starting to bring the American people on his side and just continuing to -- go.

When he was saying which is where all need to ask for this -- only to do or -- parts whether it's in the mental health.

Whether it's in the disease control whether it's.

On the on the on what removing the guns from the bad guys.

You know I know Wayne Lapierre likes to say the only good.

So you -- -- national dialogue.

Now -- not only here in congress but I across the nation.

And really kind trying to hone in what eighties these lawmakers can do and give them the political will.

Mom and dad and you're hearing from the sentiment given the political -- and do what's right.

-- Bob what do you make it is a lot of it was there was a lot of detail in that.

But it wasn't a long speech job by the standards of the sort of legislation.

He's an acting.

And at the end of the beginning and the the end when he injuries to children at the beginning quoted from their letters they send him.

And then at the end when he said we must act now for those who died in -- -- for all the victims of senseless violence a straightforward.

Appeal to the emotions.

Of Americans you think it'll work.

Do I think it'll work in terms of getting legislators -- -- -- -- because congress right I mean you know you can appeal to the American sensibilities of the citizens that doesn't necessarily get reflected in congress rarely do I mean in these days it's rare rare that a replacement congressional election I think -- congressional.

It's gonna be it's going to be very very difficult to just.

Is win a lot -- in particular that the assault weapons behind our thinking to I think getting any piece of legislatively through congress is going to be difficult because.

There are all are there simply isn't as much emotion in congress there aren't you you know you're not seen the relevant people going to the house leadership and saying we must have this -- And Obama and you know doesn't have the kind of broad based support in congress and some of our the presence of had.

He feels this.

But deeply the American people feel it deeply and the politicians know they simply do nothing for awhile everyone will forget about it -- penny let me come acting quickly design.

I think your former bosses in and a very interesting position.

-- read some.

Obviously.

From a state.

Where there are a lot of guns a lot of people who.

Will jealously fight to preserve their right under the Second Amendment to keep those guns.

And a lot of people who may well feel that this is although the president says it isn't but they will feel that this is.

An attack on the Second Amendment how do you think senator Reid is gonna play his hand.

-- And he's an eerie it is an attack position any -- music from I can say that he's also always had an a rating from the NRA believe it or not an and it's.

-- -- people that we think that think -- him but.

He's always been a strong supporter of the Second Amendment but.

He also understands that we're in a different time in -- -- Justice Scalia said in the Heller case that was brought about the DC gun law.

Hearing -- did the for the same court it.

Not every gun is part of the Second Amendment and there are certain.

It doesn't give you the right to be able to take the assault weapons dealers even military style to be able to have this.

And machine a Mac and being able to massively kill something he's gonna listen to his caucus in there isn't changing shift in opinion.

Within his caucus is it going to be and not for the tipping.

We don't know and that's what the conversation and across the nation is gonna have to be again didn't give and that political will be able to change it but.

Bombs right me right now there isn't there is David -- -- today it did their back pocket and their back pocket is -- -- with the NRA donors.

And Andy and our Indiana -- and they're saying absolutely no not one single bill must be able to get through.

And they've been doing has systematically time and time again.

But hopefully other voices voices of the victims' voices of of people that have been you know hurt by -- by the mere existence will leave it to kind of shifted but it is a top -- road.

And end it right now senator Reid has said it does not look good.

But I also know that he will go to the will of his caucus in the will of those caucuses talent in the majority -- -- Now is it time to move he will put -- fourth.

All right a lot of our viewers weighing in on this this is a subject which does a great deal of emotion as we all well know.

On both sides -- -- and says -- -- lower abiding firearms on a well trained.

-- my weapons and respectful of human life why on earth should I surrender my weapons.

And be punished for the random acts of insane and evil people I will not comply.

I don't think anybody is suggesting is there any weapons -- less -- and possibly include the military style assault weapons.

Eric maybe that's what you wanna hang onto I'm not -- The detail of the president's proposals on whether that would be grandfathered in.

Well whether it's new sales of it.

I wanna -- was asking on our chat also by the way one of these 23 executive actions -- -- -- still 23 of them fully.

But go to whitehouse dot -- that is the White House website and all of the president's executive actions his proposals.

And requirements.

Did moms if you like on congress to act tough you'll also find -- I want to bring -- Judy Miller -- -- contributor into the conversation Judy.

Your impression of the president's proposals.

His his tone and whether.

Any of this be on the executive actions will make significant enacted.

Well I think as you pointed out Jonathan it was a very powerful and emotional speech that was meant to appeal to people's emotions there concern about their children.

But I have to agree with Bob this is an uphill struggle I think the president knows it.

When you have senator Harry Reid who himself slipped in a measured it makes it more difficult for the reporting.

Of mental illness and add in doing background checks and and I'm even looking at what gun violence does to people -- to the nation when he's the author of that legislation that measure it's going to be very very hard.

Two for him to really get behind the president's.

An agenda here.

It's obvious that he's gonna play a key role of ball as as we've all said he -- but it's that this is although.

Other politicians it can take and it interesting lead on this week.

From wild West Virginia governor -- West Virginia senator Joseph mention.

I was on the show earlier this week he's one of those who said we need to do some things.

We have to act and he's from a very pro gun state obviously West Virginia and -- those voices rise above.

The politics I mean you don't seem very hopeful that they can.

I'm I'm not hopeful I mean I wish that they could -- I mean I'm hopeful in that sense and I'm glad I -- I'm not hopeful in the sense that I expected.

And look I mean that you know Jonathan.

One of the things it is so interesting to me is the way that we talk about these things you.

All the news reports are characterizing this is sweeping gun legislation.

I think I just think that -- I believe it is inaccurate term even remotely close to sweeping.

You know all you're doing is saying okay no military assault rifles and we're gonna have.

People we're gonna have civilians have fewer bullets in their weapons and new York city police officers right is that sweeping and I don't think that's sweeping I think.

Taking you don't mind.

In the minds all of that some gun owners that is sweeping off base it's it because it is taking away.

A weapon that they liked to have whatever -- -- -- W I mean most lower abiding.

Owners and all of a military style assault -- are never gonna take it to a range and that's the same to them as me going and it.

Try to possible let -- but the bill no one is.

Proposing that those weapons be taken away in what's being proposed as we stop selling right.

There's a big difference but and it's in the language a bit you in my point here is this John -- you can see how I used one word.

And now or off on this thing about you know to Second Amendment issue right.

So -- -- inserting the word sweeping I win the argument to -- nobody in congress is gonna pass anything that looks like -- as well liked or didn't give me -- it's getting tighter and it to the sweet main enemy in -- in just a Second Amendment that's why it's a difficult.

Many did ball getting into the the the emotion all of this debate.

And while the president is going to take a lot of criticism.

Fall making an emotional healing appeal for -- -- -- will some will say using children as a -- The NRA as ball that -- that would it.

It makes the same emotional appeal it does say this is an attack on your Second Amendment right -- -- -- get.

A reasoned.

Debate in this about making Michael Ball but kindly pointed out but it's not easy to get a reasoned debate and looking at the facts is it.

Where he is and we need you -- start to see that your are sort of see as you pointed out you know former governor is senator Joseph mansion.

Also Mark Warner in Virginia -- -- -- people actually speak out into the vastness and the options of all the above that it isn't just about taking.

Away or denying one type of gun or -- one type of got.

That is his comprehensive kind of approach that needs to be take -- that is different language than we've ever heard especially from those.

That our NRA supporters and on the other side you also.

I think having -- -- re committing political malpractice.

The now that they have out right now is despicable.

They'll add that they are putting out there on the web that he's using the president's children.

As a way in which to convey whatever it is that it -- he may get you know they -- need for more armed guards and have been pleased.

It is reprehensible and it is gone above and beyond.

And any type or reasoned argument I think collection backfire on them I know there will be some out there that will say no it actually helps and we were down more memberships.

But that has taken it too far and that ad today is absolutely reprehensible and needs to be taken down.

All right Kenny -- that'll let you go up from DC hey great to have you former senior advisor the senator Harry Reid -- -- policy -- Going to be a very important person in this debate as we go full penny Gracie thanks -- is that you can't.
