Hi I'm Bill O'Reilly thanks for watching us tonight guns in the federal government that is a subject of this evening's talking points memo.
Because I am a simple man I'm going to frame a very complex issue in the clearest way possible.
We'll take it step by step.
First gun control will not stop will not stop crazy people from committing murder.
There are more than 300 million guns in the USA right now so thugs are gonna get.
Also the government has an obligation to protect Americans with laws.
That do not harm.
Law abiding citizens.
That means that any new gun laws must allow we the people to protect ourselves as the founding fathers -- -- -- no problem with background checks or with gun registration after all we -- our cars.
But these things should be decided by the individual states.
Not the federal government.
-- a state like New York wants to ban assault rifles five.
May not want to do that and the Fed should respect states' rights.
What President Obama can do.
Is make all gun crimes federal crops congress can forbid individual -- From crossing state lines was certain types of weapons.
Bank robberies a federal crime so is some drug dealing.
Why not put -- felonies.
In that category.
Single to Chicago which is banned handguns.
More people were murdered by guns in Chicago in 2012 last year.
There were killed among coalition forces in Afghanistan.
Obviously the gunman at a Chicago.
Do we all get back.
What one work.
Is a ten year mandatory federal prison term for anyone convicted of any gun crime in the windy city or anywhere else in America.
Rob a 7-Eleven with a gun ten years in the federal -- illegally possess -- -- same deal ten years.
That's how you keep guns off history.
Don't believe me take a look at how drastically the crime rate has fallen in the USA over the past decade.
Nationwide violent crime down 23%.
Because of strict mandatory prison terms for chronic criminals.
If you read the late James Wilson the nation's smartest criminologist.
That punishing violent criminals harshly.
He's the key to public safety.
So let's recap again in a very simple way.
Banning guns doesn't work.
But limiting heavy weapons like assault rifles should be considered by the individual states.
Background checks on gun buyers should be mandatory.
So should gun registration.
But the situation will not get any better in Chicago or anywhere else until gun crimes are -- -- by the way.
New York State did pass a tough new gun law yesterday and it forbids.
Publishing the names of legal gun owners if they object.
The journal news -- -- -- And -- them enough the top story tonight pres Obama will ask congress to quote banned military style weapons.
Also he will sign a number of executive orders about things like sharing data and research president anticipates opposition.
There will be pundits and politicians and special interest lobbyists.
Publicly warning government to rent too radical all out assault on liberty.
Now because that's true.
They want to gin up fear or higher ratings or revenue for themselves.
And behind the scenes they'll do everything they can't.
The block any common sense reform and make sure nothing changes whatsoever.
Was senator Marco Rubio of Florida so where is the president going along so well first of all let's just thank you for having me on -- on this important issue let's remember -- the impetus for all this was it was a horrible tragedy in Connecticut which by the way all of us were outraged by all of us are -- about all of us who wanna see never happen again.
And by the don't admission of the White House what they've proposed today would do nothing to have prevented what happened in Connecticut or Colorado before that are any of these other places and this is occurred.
The issue America faces is not guns it's violence and the fundamental question is what is happening in our culture and in our society.
That's leading the people committing these atrocities whether it's mental illness or some other violence or violent propensity is that are that that have that have come into our culture and our society.
Now what the president is proposing is problematic for a couple reasons but primarily because it doesn't work.
For many of the reasons you've outlined in the talking point memo tonight and these ideas don't work it's not just Chicago.
Washington DC had a very similar gun ban and it didn't work in fact violent crime and murder and all these things skyrocketed in Washington.
During the time of those bands.
Now I'm a concealed weapons permit holder in Florida that means -- have a background check had to be fingerprinted I had to take a gun safety course more people should get those.
You object to any of that now I -- -- you know they got a registering the -- -- you don't object to background check on you you think that's -- sure -- our law in Florida and by the way also in Florida we have from the called 1020 life.
It is a crime was committed in possession of a gun it's a mandatory ten years if you pull out that guy and it's a mandatory twenty years and use that gun you are away from life even the first time you commit that.
And what's happened is that these criminals who use guns aren't jailed -- not out -- -- and so much talking points -- based on your experience you don't disagree with that -- -- -- protect.
So we have some common ground here.
View in me anyway and I'm hoping that the folks as well.
We want public safety you Paramount we understand that any gun -- isn't going to work and it's proven all over the place and we want to respect the constitution.
So how can we get President Obama on -- with this the only thing that he really did today.
That I don't think he's gonna get through is the assault banned weapons right.
Now I say leave it to the State's.
New York and assault weapons are yesterday she can't I'm here.
You know I understand both sides of that story but in my in my got to move to Florida because of the assault -- are now anonymously in New York.
But I don't want that to be nationwide I want each state because there -- different situations for us.
Well -- first of all look at the end of the day that should belong to the states to make those decisions and I would disagree with that decision but I don't live in New York island Florida.
And we don't have that northerners -- -- movement to do that.
But here's the fundamental problem we -- are outraged by these things -- no one ever wants to see something like this happen again.
The problem is the only people follow the law are people who follow the law criminals don't care what the law is they ignore the law that's why they're criminals yet but it -- To be fair to the other side deed the anti gun zealots to me that I just -- to make it harder to get gone -- what -- that they accomplished.
Yeah but -- 300 million on the street -- ready.
And then you know -- boarded that allows.
The federal government to -- -- -- Mexico which is really ironic.
It's not gonna stop.
So do you think the final question is is President Obama demagoguing this issue.
Is he demagoguing it wrong he sees public opinion going to use it is here well my election on a secret I mean the president is a liberal and this is part of the liberals lost that obviously for our country -- -- And I think this is an opportunity to get some of these things done but you talk about keeping us safe.
If someone decide I need a gun to commit crimes they're not gonna go to the local -- storm by the god they're gonna got by from the -- market they Miami is a lot of video people in New York criminals New York to drive down a Virginia.
They suck up -- the nose and bring them back which is why you could make that against federal law crossing state lines -- certain types of weapons and I would object to that.
But the bottom line is that.
Again do you think the president is demagoguing the issue does he know what we discussed here gun bans don't work states' rights should be Paramount folks have a right to protect themselves.
But he's gonna demagogue I think this is what -- wanted to do his entire political career he sees an opportunity to do it.
And he's got to utilize every rhetorical device on his -- and he can we just get to that disease really think that they're banning assault weapons is gonna stop nationally believes that he -- he does so does -- believe that I think he thinks is and he believes in this -- he thinks is -- huge but he's not he's not a hypocrite phony he really believes his public call I actually think the president and -- and haven't got submitted does not a believer in the Second Amendment although he states that he is and that's what I'm saying.
If these guys don't believe -- and the constitution I didn't write the constitution.
Neither did you need that he he doesn't want the Second Amendment to be in the constitution.
Where he wants the reform the Second Amendment and have the guts to admit that we'll get -- does senator rubio over because -- talk a little immigration -- them.
And what about president Obama's new demeanor I see a change we'll see if the senator does.
