The high stakes fight now over gun control with new fallout today after the president unveiled his -- nearly two dozen executive actions.
-- on a broad range of issues including efforts to improve existing background checks and gun safety.
Along with a push to get congress to pass bans on military style assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines.
President Obama's action drawing criticism from some Republican lawmakers and the National Rifle Association.
Who accuse the president of a power grab the tramples on the Second Amendment.
Let's talk about it -- Bob Cusack managing editor for the hill.
I mentioned that he's being criticized by Republican lawmakers but there are some Democrats who aren't too happy about all this either they're just not being quite as vocal about it is -- true.
That's a -- John I mean if that's the cliff debate divided the Republicans.
This debate is going to and it divide Democrats and -- some Democrats who -- -- some conservative red leaning states.
Up for reelection in the senate and -- for the act is gonna start in the senate.
Who had a reading from the NRA.
And are not going to be voting for an assault weapons ban assault weapon ban simply doesn't have the votes to pass other other things that could be done background checks and restrictions on high capacity magazines.
Absolutely.
But the senate it's tough spot for Harry Reid because he wants to keep its majority.
And Republicans feel that Democrats could over reach in this could be -- political win for them not what the president is gonna push very hard no doubt about it well he says he's going to push very hard and he promised that yesterday said he was gonna do everything in his power to get this done one of the things in his power would be to pick up the phone call Harry Reid and say.
You know.
I need this out of the -- -- I need you to approve this.
-- now that's right and I I think the president's gonna have to make some calls.
To these conservative leaning Democrats who -- -- on offense and that is not something he did in his first term so.
He's gonna have to really push this I mean this could be a win win for the White House when they asked for everything.
They don't get everything in and they blamed congress.
For refer only getting maybe a few things through and off course the house is not gonna move anything until the senate does that -- Democrats also say.
The ones that want these gun control up provisions they have to move very quickly.
Senator Patrick -- -- -- hold hearings but but the momentum is clearly now and in the aftermath of the tragedy Connecticut and if they wait too long if this gets solved.
It it it may not survive.
You you said the president is going to blame congress have nothing happens more specifically isn't he likely to blame Republicans when as we've just this discussed its he's got almost as much opposition.
Among Democrats.
Yes that's right -- -- it's likely he's gonna criticize Republicans and some Democrats when when Obama last he was criticizing.
The congress Democrats that little upset at that and then.
And then Obama said more Republicans in congress because of course the senate is controlled by.
Democrats and Republicans control the house so it's going to be I think it's gonna take some time and and there's going to be some boats that Republicans want they want the assault weapon.
-- voted this is -- just such a big showdown between the NRA and Obama Obama didn't take on the NRA and its first term.
And this is going to be a big big battle well and as you point out more than half of congress has an a rating from yes -- -- That's right and and and that's that's a big -- for the White House they know this is an uphill climb.
But they've got -- things on -- play they've -- obviously that the debt debate it got immigration reform they wanna get to energy to how much political capital is Obama gonna spend.
We -- Yeah that'll be the interest in fight.
Bob -- yes -- thanks Bob except.
