News -- and breaking details on a hostage crisis in Algeria there are reports that there were as many as eight Americans are among those hostages.

At least one died and seven escaped there's also growing concern over the fate of two others who might be missing.

We're also getting brand new tape recordings of what are the militant leaders talking to a member of Algeria's special forces.

And it.

Didn't but it looked.

Those audiotapes were broadcast on an Algerian TV station it is not clear when during the -- day stand -- they were taken however.

One in one of the tapes the militants threatened to blow up the entire gas refinery complex.

Meanwhile there are reports of five militants might have been captured alive.

Conner Powell is live from our mideast bureau with the very latest on that very strange story -- Well John hundreds of those hostages are now free with several dozen were killed in the attack and the subsequent raid on that BP gas facility now according to Algerian officials they say they've been.

Sifting through the debris at the site.

And they have found dozens of bodies many though reportedly -- so badly damaged impossible to tell if they -- Hostages or members of the Islamic militant group that attacked that BP facility now making matters worse is they try to.

-- the edited.

There are mines and booby traps all over that BP gas plan now -- being the bodies is reportedly going very slow because of both of these.

Factors as of now we believe that there were 23 foreign hostages killed although algerians are saying that number is likely to increase.

Now the Algerian government initially said that 32 all 32 of the militants that attacked this facility they were killed.

In the last few hours are now saying that five of those militants -- have been captured.

And this is sort of the overall problem that we had coming out of Algeria the information his bid.

Very confusing it has been inconsistent.

This is the same for.

Both journalists but also for the western governments that had citizens at this facility in Algeria there a lot of questions about.

Why the algerians launched the -- didn't tell anybody before they lost the raid -- what exactly has happened since that rate has been was completed.

Now the violence there has stopped but still a lot of question John going forward in just a few hours ago though the Algerian government said they will not allow foreign.

Foreign governments are for NATO forces to secure their oil fields they apparently still -- remaining controlled everything there and that's not really helping anything on the ground in Algeria John.

Taught her Powell live in our mideast bureau -- thank you.

For more on this now -- -- Katie McBride a Fox News national security analyst -- let's pick up apple what -- just reported to us about the enduring government and the response from them.

During this hostage crisis being in his words confusing and inconsistent.

What's the right response from America.

Well -- -- think the Algerian government and why they've done what they've done.

In the 1990s they fought a brutal civil war against these very same people who -- taken hostages right Islamic Maghreb al-Qaeda and the various officers have it.

So the Algerian government want to do this hostage take down on its own.

They did not they cared less about preserving life and maybe saving hostages as clashing this al-Qaeda movement that they don't -- to get a foothold and you now what they.

Did in the 1990 when he's taking it -- situation it is different than what happened and -- -- -- and it'll bring that up with the you can see Libya had not far away from this big area where these terrorists are operating now in northern Africa.

If there are bad guys on the ground there and the bad guys have are people why do we asked for permission.

To go and and help our own people well.

And -- you know and that's a really good question and we ought to figure it out now because this is not going to be the last time this happens.

We will find throughout North Africa I think going from North Africa to the Middle East to the Arabian Peninsula potentially all the way to Afghanistan.

We will see an increase in hostage taking attacks against America why -- -- -- to perceived to be leaving the region.

So that -- and we're also leaving behind in practical terms an awful lot of civilians who are -- are teaching school who were working there.

Who -- working in hospitals and those people are now going to be.

Really wide open and unprotected and I think the third reason that people are gonna go after Americans is we never went after the people who did the killings and then house.

I want to pick up off to that point to and bring in wet when of the president's key advisors told -- lost today and -- sending when asked about.

You where do we stand if you will on the war in terror and the war against your enemies let's take a listen to this thing.

I think this is a reminder that countries around the world share joint threat from these terrorist organizations.

-- why we are so active about providing.

Expertise -- and information and technology to help them destroy these networks where there exist.

And it's a reminder obviously northern Africa and other parts of the world al-Qaeda and al-Qaeda affiliated groups remain a real threat.

A joint effort if you -- KT well.

Look it was the United States that helped topple all these dictators and really opened pandora's box and leave open.

The sort of chaos political chaos in space where al-Qaeda which didn't start the revolutions didn't start the Arab Spring but is now taking full advantage of -- so.

To the extent that we're cooperating woman who were sharing intelligence and wanting we're not doing is going after the terrorists -- -- -- the president could say one thing tomorrow send a message GP well.

To our -- abroad what would you advise him to say I think what he ought to say is.

We're now really gonna go after.

A little bit last talking a little bit more do because what he's not done -- follow those words with actions Katie nice to feelings -- -- -- story John.
