The scene and as America gets ready to welcome president Barack Obama to a second term.
And this is power play this special one hour inaugural power.

And America today is taking a moment to reflect.
It's nice to have a democracy we do enjoy that that's a lot of fun will be talking -- about some of the presidential pomp and circumstance and all of the traditions and history today but we're also gonna take a look.
At the challenges that the president faces the opportunities he has.
And what a second Obama term is gonna look like as we face -- divided government.
In some deep differences between the parties we will do all of that and I promise we will have a good bit of fun.
And we will start the fun.
With your friend at Cornell Doug congratulations thanks Chris great Buick yes okay so you should know this Internet by now did you know -- well.
Doug is a Democrat he's a former top talker for the all right so dog.
Today for the president you know I was walking around talking to people getting revived seeing how they were people are.
I think.
Did not appreciate the magnitude of the win I think that could be the victory it was such a tough fight and they got to this and now it's finally like.
Wait a minute it.
And we want a second term and it was kind of an improbable.
Yeah it was a big deal I mean he -- with sizeable electoral more into majority -- kind of an affirmation.
Of everything he did over the you know the first four years.
The crowd may not be as big as four years ago but I think pedal -- -- here it's just a strong.
And he's gonna lay out his vision for the next four years in and talk about the big challenges we can't believe we've solved but also what's lying ahead and I think.
I think it was four years ago was about the event.
I think the speech is going to be a little more the story this time around.
Now in a second inaugural address in Lincoln set the standard.
But in a second inaugural address.
What you usually expect to hear from a president who is okay so that stuff happened.
And now this is the vision.
That's in this is the vision thing so what is -- what are you expecting your vision wise.
I think he's gonna talk about the big challenges that lie ahead.
Immigration reform.
I think it's going to be a lot about supporting and strengthening the middle class.
Doing something about gun violence.
You know that is certainly did the fiscal situation of this country is something that is at the top of his mind at the top of a lot of people's minds and we still needed.
Address that.
But also what how -- how there's a shared bond that everyone in this country has that only America could something like this happen.
And and I think that's worth reminding folks that even though during tough.
Election fights when each party is that each other's throats.
That we can come together on a day like this they're going to be a peaceful transition of power or there can be -- consent you know continuation of an administration.
And then looking forward in welcoming I think everyone to the table did offer -- their ideas.
-- at all now inside that building over there they're going to have lunch today.
And they're going to make nice for the next few hours.
But when that's over we're right back to the nasty fight right.
You don't look I I would prefer at least on today a look at some of the places where there are some shared interest and -- both Republicans and Democrats know that there's a fiscal.
And -- nightmare right staring at us down the road.
You know I think -- the president has talked about how he's willing to do something on on cots.
And entitlement reform we need to get together on that both parties have an interest in doing something on immigration reform.
Both parties I think.
Wanna do something more on jobs so there -- areas where they both can work together ultimately I think it's going to be on both sides to give up you know some of this constant.
You know 24/7 fighting and say look we've got to put the interest of the American people.
I have our own political interests and I think their people in congress who want to do that I think John Boehner wants to that I know the president wants to do that.
So I think now maybe over the next year there's a chance to get a lot of -- stuff done.
But as we listened to David club yesterday.
And then we saw the Washington Post very interesting good good story I recommend it highly in the Washington Post.
Where communications director Dan Pfeiffer.
And they're laying out basically what they see the lay of the land.
And what they're saying is these Republicans aren't worthy of this fight these people are not.
And they're not up to this and they're gonna have to.
They're going for the big win.
I think they were probably speaking generally I think there -- a lot of Republicans who want to do.
Big things I think you saw on the senate.
There were there is a few minute there's a huge vote for -- -- debt ceiling I think there are a lot of Republicans Marco Rubio want to do something on immigration reform I think on gun violence there Republicans wanted to something on that I think.
You know so it's finding the right Republicans I mean I think there is a culture inside -- you know the Tea Party in particular that has a real problem -- compromising and working with this president.
But there are a lot of I think there are other Republican -- who want to get something done they don't want to just you know sit in their share for two years.
-- -- watch the clock -- I think this is an opportunity do some big things.
So here's a question.
And I can tell you what a Clinton Democrat -- I can tell you what a Reagan Republican is.
I can kind of tell you what -- George W.
Bush style Republican as.
But I was talking about this with Joseph Trippi and Joseph be with us later sorry about this -- -- I said what's an Obama Democrat tell me what.
Ideological view point or -- or sad and Joseph was sort of like.
It's hard to say it's hard to say the imprint that Barack Obama's left on his -- we know at least change the Republican Party but how what's -- Obama never.
Well I think he's put the middle class first and foremost and all of these fights and I think he's a pragmatist.
-- we did do health -- no Republicans in like that did not like they did not like that but if you look at the bill there are a lot of elements that were that were Republican ideas I think over the course of the last four years you've seen him.
Try to you know in -- grade ideas on the left and the right.
But I think he's a pragmatist and I think first and foremost he saw he thinks about what's best for the middle class but you know look for this.
You know we got four -- years so I think at the end of the -- this term I think that'll be a lot easier to two to write about what kind of what is an Obama Democrat because we didn't necessarily know what a Clinton Democrat was after his first four years since.
Okay all right -- buy that will buy that now when we think about it.
And legacy and now we know that Obama somebody thinks about legacy alive in this beaches the stored.
-- legacy.
What does history remember him as you know he had the advantage last disadvantage.
By being the first African American president he was already history maker like you walk in and it's like I'm in the books.
But now when he looks forward to looking back.
You know Bill Clinton and George W.
Bush both spent a lot of time in their second terms on this what's my legacy -- -- what how how is the world different had people -- make.
When Obama thinks about that what's he thinking about.
I think he sat back he's accomplished some -- -- pretty amazing things in the first four years ended the war in Iraq.
You know ordered to -- the he did have some help bond absolutely as enemies -- commander in chief so you know he he ordered that the kill on a summit in mind he pulled us out of that one of the greatest recessions we've seen.
But it's still incomplete I mean the picture has not been.
Completely you know painted and -- on the economy.
-- we've made advances you know unemployment is lower now than when he took office.
You know certainly Wall Street's doing pretty well.
We still need to do a lot more and there are -- things that the president can do over the next four years to really get that economy a shot in the -- so that people can look back on him.
And say you know he was a transformational president who.
Who -- you know who stepped in during really big times not only from a national security policy standpoint a farm policy standpoint but certainly here in this country.
And you know maybe there's a chance that he can you know start doing something about the politics that exists in Washington you and I know that's a lot.
Easier said than done a lot of people try to George Bush -- tried it you know Bill Clinton tried it it's really tough.
But I do think that there's some areas where -- can work with some of the Republicans in and and I hope -- I hope both sides you know take advantage of that.
You know we have -- we have to thank Doug he is being a big hearted and bipartisan -- of your rising to the spirit of the day.
But when we think about.
From a tactical.
Point of view for Democrats.
The coming weeks are going to be very -- this is going to be a tough time the Republicans have made an offer on the debt ceiling essentially that they say pass a budget in the senate.
Won't -- we'll give you thirty we'll give you sixty days or whatever ninety days and you don't win and then we'll talk again.
But whatever the president wants to do legacy wise.
Right now it looks like we're still going to be staggering we're still gonna jump for you know its -- -- ninety days it's the next clip -- the next thing.
I think the president wants to avoid jumping from crisis to crisis.
And the three month extension of the -- element that's not the certainty that small business folks are looking for that American people are looking for that Wall -- looking for main street.
I think we need to get that off the table -- extended for a year and then there are a lot of other big issues that we can tackle.
This is -- this year right now is the best time for the president to get a lot of these big things done because once you know Tony fourteen starts and we start moving into mid terms.
And then when he sorties over and then we're heading in another present presidential election so it's in your political me out well look his political capital is stronger right now than it ever will be -- Re always that -- -- will be right and down.
And and Republicans obviously have some challenges inside of the party and with.
With the American people what I -- taken there -- let's take a look there's Sasha and Malia Obama coming out with mom.
Aren't coming out with their grandmother I'm sorry mrs.
Robinson.
And and there they come and certainly for the president his best asset in many ways.
Continues to be his -- -- Stanley you know they've really kind of I think it.
Redefine what traditional American family is in front of -- they're pretty traditional I -- and -- -- do what it looked at it.
It it it's the first time I think the American people have had a chance to look at an African American family.
Up close and personal every single day.
Certainly Michelle was -- in the First Lady was a fantastic asset on the campaign.
And -- -- -- was Bill Clinton he was probably -- -- yeah but she is able to.
Costliest picture you know dimensional -- him as a human being.
And out.
And and really give a window into what kind of person he is -- -- father he is.
What kind of friend he is an -- she was you know she give a fantastic speech.
In Charlotte she's going to continue being a great asset not only for him but also fighting for you know a military families that's a big.
Big thing on that -- for as.
Idol and think about this just remember a practical point of view.
We're gonna announce see these girls grow up into -- glitzy his eldest daughters a teenager by now right yeah those children will get to see -- really growing up in the White House which should be.
That's a tough that's a tough.
Test and getting I think so probably you know so get her driver's license -- Miller shall tend to I don't know if the life she'll actually you know try to get it she'll probably be.
Applying to college.
There are a lot of things that that -- you know the bush daughters went through a similar growing up experience -- -- -- the White House here it's very warm up yeah I mean it's a very very tough tough.
Armed with cameras on you -- Chelsea Clinton had to go through the same thing it's a very tough I don't certainly don't envy that sort of you know upbringing as a kid because you're growing up in front of millions and millions people.
But you got a nice ride and so it's okay all right we're gonna take a quick break but when we come back Charles hurt you know him he'll join the fun.
And he'll have a view that I suspect might be somewhat different the Douglas so stick around.

How President Obama is going to opened his arms and find the Republicans to work with do deals to solve America's largest issues.
And that he is day.
Pragmatist not an ideologue it.

I would be interested to see that I don't I kind of doubt it I feel like what we've seen certainly over the last you know.
Couple years has been a guy who won.
He knows he -- and he's he's he's he's been -- certainly sponsor since reelection has been.
You know look at the polls you know I won and you're gonna have to either go my way or -- -- gonna get done.
And make him a break and now we're getting ready here if you look you can see that the First Lady is about to come out.
And the people I will say this that folks here.
Are as Doug was talking about earlier.
Which.
Just as excited or more excited to see her in the crowd here these folks are more excited maybe about her than even the president and having her as First Lady and she's beloved.
And you know it's interesting for President Obama.
His approval numbers are not what they were four years ago but hers are -- Yeah she's sabres tonight at -- and let everyone in Washington went and be her.
Her pulling position right now of course could start visitors are everywhere -- in the -- I'm also gonna start doing banks I'm gonna do a shag like she did her new haircut I'm gonna throw that out.
Jet black -- totally yeah yeah yeah -- yeah yeah I totally and I'm gonna be banging and it's gonna be awesome.
-- Fairly here's a question for you.
Republicans are.
Crabby and happy -- Having -- Toronto area.
What's the strategy for them.
Oh I think did you know I think that they're going to sort of pick their battles and I think -- -- mate I'd try to rearrange the timing of some of the battles so that they can fight you know for the with the debt ceiling.
Later groups some jets.
Oh wow got.
Fears for Michelle Obama and.
Looking glamorous I think we can say that she's looking glamorous.
And there -- is.
Are we ready for Joseph Biden.
-- he's -- OK so the question is an open there's Bill Clinton.
So there were the two people who got Barack Obama reelected his wife and the former president went out and vouched for him.
In terms what America is thinking about today.
And having this this family.
In for four more years and having Michelle Obama -- the First Lady.
What's the cultural significance you talked about seeing an African American family.
I guess not since the hawks doubles.
That is -- Have a healthy functional good model that is not generally what's portrayed in the mainstream media if you see a lot of negative for -- of African American families.
But in terms of how Washington functions and what the style and what the attitude is.
Go ahead give us your rest your cool you know.
Well look you you you -- you have a pres.
And here's a pretty young president.
You know I think that there are not only are today is CA distort historical figure but he's got on the pop culture icon he started east he was that when he ran for president.
Any you know he's got kids who are.
Who are.
You know.
If you've you know also kind of in some ways of pop culture icons themselves but he also leveled a 10 a wife who is a very strong.
Figure who really can reach outside -- a lot of different types of people.
And dumb and I think she's been that was one of her her I think strengths during the campaign -- to be able to connect not just African Americans or Hispanics but to.
Women across you know the ideological ethnic and racial spectrum and she's a big.
Big I think advocate for.
Veterans and military families -- something that they.
The force and foremost they did a concert Saturday night for military kids I think she's gonna continue that and also her work on fitness and nutritional related issues.
Nutritional fitness and good nutrition related issues Charlie -- Charlie -- will be doing the same thing for the next four years.
Okay now we're gonna take a look at something that's pretty special -- your your friend Megan Kelly took a look at.
The history second terms the significance what's important.
So let's take a look at that -- Right I don't know -- -- that Hamlet where I George Walker Bush -- this.
Do solemnly swear -- brought mr.
Obama do solemnly swear.
It is a -- that's been taken by each of our presidents usually over revival with the eyes of the world watching the joke is really deep deep honor and their responsibility.
That is -- -- bestowed upon.

The United States protect the citizens of the United States.
To honor the ideals.
Of the constitution.
George Washington first added so help me god to the -- A tradition of President Obama will continue as he takes that pledge once more on Abraham Lincoln's Bible.
Our first president made a 280 mile journey on horseback from Mount Vernon to New York for the inaugural ceremony -- 1789.
And the nation celebrated a new dawn.
This was the passing of power to a man who could've been -- But refused it.
And -- -- each successive inauguration was a celebration.
Even to today to Obama's inauguration it's a celebration of that fact.
That.
We didn't make our chief executive -- he wouldn't be a king he would pass at all.
We traded royalty for representation we say goodbye to god save -- keen to embrace -- the people.
The inauguration is the most changeable visible picture.
Are represented governments.
Since Thomas Jefferson's inauguration we've seen the three branches of government come together in Washington DC for the event but he path that I executive -- the president of the United States.
And holding up his hands that I write taking -- poster did and by the Supreme Court justice.
Of the judicial -- and this is all done on the steps of the US capitol the legislative -- much has changed over the years including the site of the inauguration house and Ronald Reagan used -- ceremony from the east side of the capitol to the west front to face his beloved California.
-- -- the inauguration has also changed from march 4 to January 20.
To shorten the lame duck session of congress.
This year the twentieth rolls on a Sunday so the public event is on the 21 democracy is the binding thread of the -- something we celebrate even in the wake of bitter elections.
It is an uplifting moment whether we support -- that particular.
-- candidates.
Or not it's like of rebirth every single time.
That we are able to witness.
That peaceful moment.
When and this incredible responsibility.
Is bestowed upon one person and I think.
The country come together in the inauguration period because.
We have this common that pride.
In the fact that.
We're a democracy that is survived.
And that's very rare for a president it's a moment to be safer.
It's his greatest moment the brief moment where he can celebrated in July.
The fact that he got elected.
And that.
And that is how Charlie hurt enters the room every time he does.
And -- yeah.
If your hour long.

As we get ready to see President Obama.
And after we took a look at some a presidential history the significance of second terms let's wait for a second.
Because we're about to have the commander in chief.
Is -- on his way out escorted there by UC.
A lot of people.
And I don't know who they are but they're probably very important these may be.
I there's a sergeant in arms I see senator Chuck Schumer from New York.
Lamar Alexander Republican from Tennessee.
His coattails they got here.
You know -- -- some kind of -- -- back there I don't know what he's doing.
But that.
He's got his own it's a smaller trumpet but it is but this is the big moment this is when -- present -- United States this is the big moment.
And we -- -- in that package.
Complete Douglas Weaver who is a presidential historian of some repute and he has a fine hat.
And so -- and Charlie hurt with the stealth so Doug.
In terms and we heard from you -- that package talking about.
Who.
This moment for the president that this is the chance where it's like yeah after all of that yet what's the what is the historical significance of this moment.
Well it's a peaceful passing of power even to a second term it's that transition and that is such an anomaly in history it's always known it.
We grew up with that our parents grow up -- grandparents through but.
It's like a rare animal out on the Savannah somewhere you just look at it was fascination people from all over the world come to watch it.
And puzzle.
At how power can actually be passed it you know I stood on that platform.
When it passed from Reagan to George Herbert Walker Bush I'll never forget that because.
Win win you know George Herbert Walker Bush had served very faithfully loyally as a vice president -- when that moment came.
And he took the oath of office when he turned.
To shake hands with Ronald Reagan.
I couldn't -- -- -- hit it just looked like the color drained out of Ronald Reagan.
Like I didn't know it was the feel like this you can almost see.
Power almost physically passing from one person to another maybe it was my imagination but it sure.
It sure looked like Ronald Reagan was temporarily caught by surprise.
The magnitude of power that we invest in the president of the United States makes the transition of -- then I know we're not transitioning but it makes the orderly succession.
More remarkable because we have turned the presidency into a very imperial kind of deal I mean the ruffles and flourishes -- fanfare.
You know when George Washington Tokyo's.
It was not like this.
And the presidency wasn't conceived is -- as what it is turned into a guy with the power to blow blow up the world.
Send armies into battle without congressional approval oftentimes.
A lot of power vested in one man.
So the question and Charlie -- want to get your political view and then I wanna get God's view on the historical.
Context.
For Obama.
This is a moment to celebrate but it's also a moment where he is reminding America that.
He's a pretty big deal this is this is still the guy who takes the jet to go to Hawaii this is still a guy who lives a pretty regal life.
And for those of us who -- concerned about that gathering power in the White House whether you're Republican or Democrat it is kind of concerning especially you have the senate Democrats right now.
Working very hard to give up a lot of their authority to give president -- -- for what I would argue are short term gains.
Which will return.
Can be turned against them.
With the next and his Republican president Republican congress but go along with what it was -- it that's it I you know I spent all my time.
Griping about you know in partisan fashion about.
President Obama.
I'd say -- sitting there are reports today and watching literally thousands of people walked by with their families.
To come down and watch the -- -- watch this it is it's a it's a very it's a thrilling moment because whatever your politics are.
And I don't you know I probably don't agree with any of those people walking by its -- -- they were they were so thrilled neighbors they were so happy and and it was it.
And an that that it's a very infectious thing and they sure don't agree with you and there's Chuck Schumer.
Senator from new York and he's the head of the chairman of the committee that's doing this because.
Congress is hosting the president this is the boot as part of all that did the symbolism of this.
This is Congress's authority -- inaugurate the present congress inaugurate the president he doesn't inaugurated himself.
Dug in terms of the scope of power and how we've seen the presidency change over time.
This is not exactly what the founders had envision the role of the president to be right right in fact.
It was great controversy about an inaugural ceremony.
They didn't want to have -- at first that they finally decided they needed to.
To thumb their nose -- England.
So was more of the demonstration that you -- -- Were inaugurating our president and that was the only reason they did this to make it very clear you know you can hang us but we're gonna do this thing and here's our new leader but it is shocking you know only a few years ago.
-- president had to have a signature to bug your phone now reaching Julia without a signature -- So it's pretty remarkable transition and I have to say it's been bipartisan.
I remember -- in the White House.
Of Herbert walker we have all these lobbyists come in to talk to us that wanted money corporations and others that want that money and I said how we've got a future conservative Republicans they said well it's our turn you know the Democrats get -- they get this money we gotta get this while we can't.
And I thought wow where -- we headed with this in this.
It -- our form of government really in my humble opinion has changed.
We've we've had a real change in the form of government.
And congress it seems to go along with that and -- -- -- -- -- with under George W.
Bush with the wars and it's happening now with.
-- talk about the debt ceiling and and other things where where that congress is just saying here take our power cord from who want -- to its.
And and what the founders had envisioned was -- a contest a struggle for power between the branches.
But as Charlie points out if you're running for office every two years.
There's a lot to be said for not having to decide things and -- -- -- to the Supreme Court on social issues and things like that but they've been very happy to let the executive branch.
Go the way they want they -- you know when when you when you had done congressmen and senators and meeting.
And the buying stock.
And then going into rooms to decide the positions that would cause -- stocks to go up -- down and it's all legal.
Yes it's pretty remarkable what's happened and we're we're headed a little bit scary gets it used to be left and right but that's old the left bank the right bank the monarchy the left the cold war's over.
And it's not not really up -- down that's not richer for its more like theater out.
Your your your the inside we're benefiting from all of these the monetary system from all these things that are happening you're getting rich.
Are -- out.
And it's not just the middle class it's been wiped out the last few years.
A lot of wealthy people have been wiped out a lot of elderly wealthy people who were gonna retire and wealth.
Loss of value of their homes are IRAs -- retirement and their -- they were wealthy.
And their poor.
All right we gotta talk about something more cheerful because we're up here on a high ledge and we do not want anybody we do not want Charlie to jump.
So we're -- -- be we're gonna -- your vote won't say that's Charlie you point out.
The District of Columbia is having a party -- DC is like out on the streets last night this morning it was like.
Who rob what party are you going to tonight what's the Charlie -- party tonight.
Would go to the Charlie -- party ahead and I'm going to be there with the Charlie her children and Charlie Hayward have dinner.
And I think we'll probably watched on TV and -- -- kind of keep it at that.
That that'll be Charlie -- with a can of Vienna sausages in his basement and -- -- grousing by any sausages all right guys we're gonna take a very quick break -- thank you Doug we thank you Charlie for being with us today when we come back he'll be much more.
