Well the doctors then and she's here to talk about an aggressive new strain of -- -- virus that's been sweeping the globe.
Well it has taken hold here in the US the Centers for Disease Control reports that since September.
The new strain has caused more than 140.
-- virus spreads quickly through large groups and causes bouts of vomiting and diarrhea.
Doctor Leigh Vinocur had done assistant professor at -- -- Health Science Center Shreveport.
-- doctor Lee how are you doing.
Then how are you I am well they -- Italian a lot of people are because that does not sound very -- those symptoms that you get from this -- virus how else can you tell us.
A little bit more in terms of how this virus attacks the body.
Well what's interesting is every couple you.
-- a new strain comes about this one was coincidentally.
With this influenza during the peak of influenza this one -- so I think early on.
When we were hearing about people that had the flu but had nausea vomiting and and diarrhea it was probably they were infected with the Norah virus.
And the -- virus is.
GI virus it's been around for a long time it was first described as the Norwalk virus.
And it's been in the news intermittently here about cruise ships having outbreaks that where people get sick but the key is.
Good hygiene hand watching things like that you can really protect yourself until mid GI gastrointestinal.
Then how do you know that -- some of the symptoms -- the save -- And the flu how do you know it -- -- difference and then how do you treat this buyers.
Well truthfully the regular influenza you really shouldn't have.
Vomiting and diarrhea.
And there really isn't a treatment for this virus and most of the time in normal healthy.
Adults and older children.
They just are sick for a week they key is.
The diarrhea isn't what can really make you sick -- the vomiting and you can get dehydrated from that -- the key for that is.
Is to really keep a lot of fluids down and if you're finding somebody in your family.
Co -- -- whatever and they're not keeping fluids down.
That's the time to go to the emergency room because what you might needed some IV fluid.
Instead you didn't see how they got deleted periods necessarily mean -- -- treated at an attempt correct me if I'm wrong do you just let it pass through the body make sure you stay hydrated.
Yeah I know it is I mean you know with a lot of diarrhea illness is somehow that's how we get rid of the bacteria and the viruses and people always -- -- stop diarrhea so I always tell people.
If they can stand the diary and keep really well hydrated that's the key and it usually just takes a week and it runs its course.
I mean the key is if you're very old very young.
Immune compromised and you really can't keep anything down then you might need some IB's and then once you catch this -- buyers are you more susceptible to forward to.
Be able to attack you again.
You know it's every year at the same way we get the flu little changes come minute and yet you can get the -- virus.
Again this is a new strain that's out called the Sydney strain from Australia.
The little different than the older one so in other pretty tricky these viruses they mutate they evolve and then they get us again.
We expect wash your hands and that's me right.
Leigh Vinocur I wanna -- you I don't think that ever said they were -- so many times since then but before noon okay well thank you don't really think that it happened.
