Well the raging debate over gun control makes its way to the nation's capital today as protesters march on Washington.

Taking their case straight to lawmakers Molly Henneberg is joining us now live on the National Mall before -- And organizers say this march grew out of the tragic school shooting in Newtown Connecticut in fact we're expecting some residents new town here at this march today.

People here say they want to support President Obama and his efforts and large gun control laws -- the books.

He -- you see some people behind me and people here marching had signs -- say enough is enough.

Others have signs with the names of people killed as the results of gun violence.

They say they want more background checks a ban on high capacity ammunition magazines and a ban on assault weapons -- Assault weapons just do not -- Need and do not have a place in the hands of civilians and we want to see responsible gun control we agree with people be able to have guns.

For protection of their homes and hunting exploits but these assault weapons I don't even see why there in any society they they belong in Warren.

The president and senate Democrats have been pushing for more gun control laws.

As the Senate Judiciary Committee will begin hearings on it next week.

Some Democrats though have not signaled whether or not they will support the president's efforts.

Keep your eye on these Democrats -- these discussions continue in Washington Montana's Max Baucus Alaska's mark Vegas arkansas' Mark Pryor.

All of them -- from largely rural states where guns and hunting are part of the culture and these three men are up for reelection next year.

May depend on how they vote -- how these laws if they're past.

There was a very small pro Second Amendment gathering on the mall earlier this morning as well.

People there said more gun laws are not going to keep people with mental health issues from committing violent acts.

This is not about school shootings.

School shootings can be stopped but it's not by taking away the right to bear arms from legitimate.

Law abiding citizens.

The crowd -- just heard from education secretary Arnie Duncan who said the time for words is over and the time for action on gun control is now.
