A Milwaukee sheriff says calling 911 no longer your best option potentially he's urging residents to learn how to handle a firearm in this PSA.
With offices -- off and furloughed simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option.
You can beg for mercy from filing criminal hide under the bin or you can fight back but are you prepared.
Consider taking a certified safety course and handling of firearms you can defend yourself -- we'd get there -- -- duty to protect yourself and your family.
We're partners now can -- count on you.
The voice of authority the man behind the ad is Milwaukee County sheriff David Clark junior and he joins us right now.
Live good morning -- you share.
Good morning to you as well why did you record that particular public service announcement.
It was a certain number of things going on in the Milwaukee area.
There's been a rise and burglaries and street robberies are going on for quite some time.
It's my job and -- top law enforcement officer in Milwaukee County.
To continually advise people is to things that they can do to better protect themselves -- of safety message.
I think it's pretty clear I just told people.
What's going on and give them information and I feel.
A personal safety is an individual responsibility anyway but people have to be prepared.
To do this thing the police are not on the press we can't be everywhere all the time sometimes we can't be there as fast as we'd like.
So in those situations.
And I talk about it.
Once the wolf is at the door once intruders in your home.
Once a guy sticks a gun in your face on the streets and demand your wallet or or or wants to take your car 911 isn't going to help you but there are some things that you can do.
In that situation.
To protect yourself and it's my obligation to advise -- how to do that.
So the mayor comes out mayor Tom Barrett releases this statement.
-- criticize in the end quote apparently -- David Clark is a dishing for the next dirty Harry movie your reaction to that.
Well first personally I remember seeing the dirty Harry movie.
But that's all the mayor can come up with that's pretty weak I think that what's going on in the city Milwaukee.
On his watch.
This is kind of you know it looks like she doesn't have much to say he doesn't have much to offer and that's okay.
My job is to protect the public to give the public -- for information that they need to be honest with them to be straightforward them.
And let them make those decisions.
Sheriff did this come about because of these shootings in recent history at the schools and that sort of thing or were you going to do this no matter what.
Well the burglaries and robberies have been going on in the Milwaukee -- they're going on for quite some time.
At some point especially with the the scaling back of public safety resources last year I had to lay off 42 sheriff's deputies.
The city of Milwaukee police department.
Fur load for this year 15100 officers three -- -- that's 4500.
That you know days -- offices and spent on the streets.
While the crime continues to go on a moment calls for service continue to come in.
So there's a breaking point at some.
You know at some point and again it's my obligation.
In light of that I could sit back to whine about the fact that we don't have the resources and that we can get their quickly.
Or -- can better prepare the public give us some options.
And that's why I mention -- -- -- these safety.
Of course because that's a critical element of -- is going to use of firearm if you're going to have one you better know -- Sheriff Clark -- -- is your advice just for the people in your county or would it be applicable to people all across the country.
Well on the -- from Milwaukee coming that's where my responsibility.
Begins and ends.
And as for other people others serve so the police chiefs and others to take a look at what's going on.
And a landscape is different although there are some girls and urban areas Milwaukee's an urban area.
Out of they have to make those determinations I do what's best for my constituents.
Great to see you this morning thanks for your thoughts.
