And that has been the scene and -- stores across the United States as Second Amendment loving Americans go.
To purchase firearms ahead of what many feel.
Will be a band or an effort to ban guns by the Obama administration and senate Democrats.
And this is power play I increase -- -- and Internet.
The gun control debate rages on as promised the president today is meeting with chiefs of police to talk about his proposal for a ban on certain kinds of weapons.
And you know who has the latest and also.
-- and bring nose and she'll be with us in a second talk about it.
And also today to talk about that subject and others and -- -- -- and entertain you -- -- approach he's the president of solidarity strategies and he's the director of the Latino project act that makes him a Democrat.
A union man.
And also is a Hispanic kind of Democrat right there that these things are all correct yes they are and Jim Pinkerton is none of those things.
He is a contributing editor and writer at the American conservative magazine is Fox News contributor.
Ideas and -- the right and he served in the bush White House Payer or reportedly wants yeah everywhere every.
Okay say so he's definitely -- Republican.
So everybody's in the appropriate corner but to give us the facts to help us understand what is actually going on before the -- to -- -- start -- birdie machine and welcome to the big show.
Hello Chris -- are you.
The Internet -- you.
Now the president's meeting with these folks today what's on the agenda.
What's interesting because it's been very tightly controlled.
We know that there are police chiefs and folks there that we understand ours are supposedly supportive of what the president has proposed so far.
We know what he rolled out -- executive actions that he took but also think about background tax we have the bill last week from senator Dianne Feinstein which apparently has got.
A lot of the things plugged into the that the president wants to know this ban on assault weapons but also lowers the threshold for what you would define as an assault -- -- -- big changes with that bill.
I you and I talked about the politics of it whether it ever gets anywhere what's interesting is were also seeing across the country a number of allies of the Obama administration are now stepping up.
Folks like -- vehicle -- Mara -- -- cogdell.
The mayor nutter in Philadelphia when it's all over the place we have statewide officials also saying.
We're gonna divest any of our pension funds things like teachers' pension funds police officers pension funds.
Anything that is connected to the gun industry in any way we're going to make sure that it's -- dusted we don't wanna give them any financial help.
Now rom Emanuel went as far as writing out letters to the CEOs of Bank of America and TD bank saying.
We know that your bank's offer millions in credit lines to Smith & Wesson.
And also was Sturm Ruger & Co.
and what we want you to do is help us join us in the fight I have -- letter it says we want you to put pressure on these companies.
They -- -- line now with all these gun proposals that are going on Capitol Hill from the White House as well.
I'm so they're gonna try to exert financial pressure over these manufactures -- not talk to somebody within the industry who says to me.
Bring it on every time they come after us like in the 1990s when they had several gun manufacturer lawsuits.
They lost because it it solidifies those who -- very protective of the Second Amendment.
It is always a financial bill into these companies because right now they can't keep up with the production demands for these guns.
And -- won those lawsuits essentially on the bottom line argument that guns are legal.
And people use all kinds of things for illegal actions whether it's you know abusing a certain type of -- -- you could use a tennis -- to kill somebody.
I mean none of the lawsuits against the gun industry succeeded back in the mid ninety's.
They think hey if you come after us financially we're gonna end up winning anyway -- -- -- think.
-- -- When you're not -- the Internet you can be seen filling in for meg and Kelly for Bret -- Or of course you can do the right thing Internet and you could tune into Fox News Channel on Sunday afternoon and check action temperature there thank commission.
-- -- About.
Now -- -- and you could kill somebody with a tennis racquet but it would take a heck of a lot longer than it would with a with a forty caliber Glock.
That is that I'd say that that is undeniable.
But on this question.
Four.
The right they now see the president and his allies moving on every front they see a coordinated mass action on this and they're kind of freaking him.
I -- -- yeah hey I got tennis I'll go you know I think I think this is before.
And I think they're ready and I think they they think with considerable justification that they're -- Be back the president on it on the assault weapons ban and so you'll see the president doing by executive action executive order what he can and then measure on the edges on -- injections are.
I I do they are that though that the left and that the program central forces arm are more resourceful and I think they will take another run lawsuits and shareholder -- -- -- -- big toughness boycotts and Pacific regulations -- And I wouldn't underestimate their ability to mobilize forces there.
It is not the same isn't limited assault weapons it just makes life difficult for example.
Cerberus is a giant hedge -- and private equity fund it unveiled the Chrysler her -- yeah weapons and -- works for them former vice president and they also own bush -- to the air they are fifteen man advantage.
And they've already said they're gonna digest that I think you'll -- -- CE eighty further.
Splitting if you will between red and blue America as.
The blue elements in the manufacturing and finance chain of guns get pushed out become red and so New York City divest gun owners and the gun owner in the gun manufacturers all exist in Kansas or Texas.
Because of.
Speaking of Texas you and you know Democrats who have guns abstinence didn't want -- sleeping -- guns and gun toting a better understood goes from going ahead.
The the issue here is.
On these other ways to go as many on the left.
Are now saying it's time for the president to use any means necessary since legislative fix is not likely.
Because the divisions that -- describe -- -- use the EPA.
-- -- the Treasury Department use any means necessary.
To make guns either prohibitively expensive or do something to constrain this.
Is that something he ought to think about doing.
I think that what you're seeing his meeting with the with the police chiefs and these mayors these are all urban areas these are places where gun bounces higher than on the back to where I was raised and I think what is tigers moved quickly I think -- -- -- a timing issue.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- I'll visit to deal with so few people are trying to get him to do something right now I don't think that it's going to happen as quickly as someone like on the left and the truth is that win.
We talk about.
Rahm Emanuel squeezing -- Or whatever these are things that are not about mass shootings.
These are about news street crime that has plagued American cities for a long time taking those kinds of guns out of circulation doesn't isn't about preventing mass shootings but in cities like.
Chicago.
Philadelphia Washington DC and other places that have a lot a lot of street crime and murders every year.
You know remember in the ninety's when this discussion is really going up close I mean -- that was right -- in Washington some 630.
Humor occurs every year so this is what that's great.
You with the -- liberal leftist and a strange position.
What they -- -- the -- occasional horrific tragic Newtown Connecticut shooting an outstanding.
What -- Emmanuel in his capacity as mayor of my hometown Chicago everybody is 500 people here getting shot in mostly gang violence in Chicago is open.
It's odors of the problem is.
Inner city urban violence and yet the solution they're putting for earth is sort of regulating Wyoming.
And Texas and so on it is a little little bit of confusion Aaron they would deny there's put it that way but what do it's if somebody could come of the -- -- -- -- -- gun control -- of certain areas.
And -- other areas along.
That will be sort of a -- time.
Arizona as -- as -- -- you do secret this record tends to take rather it is okay if it does to an end and therefore we have this continuing problem of if for example Heidi I can't we just got elected as a Democrat from North Dakota and a very pro Republican very program voted -- surrounding.
-- pro -- state if she said -- I don't think I'm gonna vote for this and she's one of many and in that category and so again -- do -- -- -- Probably in -- nothing -- -- -- to go to would object to.
Gun control for Chicago there's a lot from north -- -- the to Jim's point.
And your previous when it's going to be tough to pull a huge -- through this edited the even and even on the democratic side the Feinstein bill is gonna meet resistance from a lot of red state Democrats.
There is however this proposal on background checks it's coming together Mark Kirk Republican from Illinois -- -- Democrat from West Virginians -- -- shot for something like that.
I think that that's going to be a middle ground I mean honestly think so I worked on the hot -- -- some he's.
Also know that the Supreme Court has already ruled on having guns they brutal military Washington DC was great -- with the Supreme Court says.
And that's why I think that people should not -- Afraid of thinking that somebody's gonna take their guns as a Supreme Court has already said that they cannot do that in.
Trying to regulate pistols inside inner cities TV but back to the point of the background checks I think that that's going to be the middle ground.
I think that that's where we're gonna get to have always felt like that was a piece.
That you couldn't get enough Republicans and enough Democrats to agree on I think you're gonna lose both sides -- from the far left and the far right but I think there's enough moderation in the Milosevic over.
I we will talk more about this with -- in the -- I promise we will we will do that but we also need to get -- -- other business we've got an immigration discussion that's going on as a gang of eight they should think of a veteran in the game it's that's kind of sinister at age eighteen -- a group.
A gathering of eight.
On a bipartisan immigration package in the senate we're gonna talk about that -- talk about two views on the Republican reboot are you more like Bobby Jindal.
If you're Republican or are you more like.
Former vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan when it comes the way forward for Republicans we will discuss -- with one who knows -- stick around.
I wish we didn't have eight or twelve million people here that are -- document but we do we have to deal with a we have to deal with -- in a way that's compassionate but also responsible -- That was Marco Rubio getting the word in edgewise in -- January 16 interview on the O'Reilly Factor.
And this is power play it you Marco Rubio heard from Bill O'Reilly now what a lot of people expected but he heard from Bill -- was that's probably about time -- -- do something you're not gonna deport all these people so I guess it's okay and jaws dropped.
In effect we continue now into -- this place that many people did not think we would be and especially after the 2007 effort by president George W.
Bush and John McCain.
To forge some sort of what in Washington we call comprehensive.
Immigration strategy.
But here we are it -- it is on its way we have a group of eight senators Marco Rubio.
And Jeff flake from the conservative.
This team in the Republican Party moderates Lindsey Graham and John McCain have teamed up with four democratic senators.
And moderate who mostly moderate Michael Bennett from Colorado and then Chuck Schumer my gosh he's just he's a big deal inside the Democratic Party Dick Durbin.
Same same.
And one other whose name is escaping me right now but -- You probably remember I know who knows who better now it's a great job because they don't that you don't get to be part of the Latino project act without tracking immigration efforts.
And Jim Pinkerton.
With -- still OK check this is this is your ballpark so I will let you take the first cut your.
V I wrote in the -- but it.
Which candidate you may have simply for the cost of the Twitter follow that's entire -- That if the president wants this to pass this president is interested in having comprehensive.
Bipartisan immigration reform he would just -- It's quiet as a church maps that he would just step out of this process because if -- -- -- and says or does anything the Republicans will not be more likely if he calls for them to pass it they will feel worse about passing it and if he said it or if he says I'm glad you're finally seeing it my way.
They'll just get an answer shouldn't if he -- is the passion he just -- -- I don't think so I think -- didn't think that he there's -- program -- I think -- -- to talk about it because he says he's gonna talk about it's the tone he takes and the amount of respect that he should give to people who are almost side of this issue I think that this.
Legislation goes -- not because it's the best thing in the what I think is because you have business on the right -- wanna see this go through and you've got labor unions and workers on the left to -- -- -- was just the right thing to do if you can get these two set to always are fighting each other over policy to agree that there needs to be something -- done then we should stand in the way of something getting done you'd think if he goes out and call people out -- is gonna stop from happening.
I think that he should say look we all agree that this should happen let's sit down and make this happen.
There's got to be a pathway to get this done if the business in the chamber of commerce can sit down with the they have socio and we should not be able to saying good bye -- around the state.
So he's going to do it differently than he did it on things like the debt ceiling and others -- -- and I hope he hopes you know.
Or -- the gun control issue what's happened in the wake of the Gabby Gifford I don't like -- media.
The -- the president has a tendency toward.
Strong partisanship and and as -- -- your -- touched on and I'm reminded of what a great president and a great executive Ronald Reagan said.
You get anything you want done and wrongs don't care who discredit Joseph -- that the president is pres Obama is willing to let.
Lindsey Graham and Michael Bennett took -- get credit for this.
To be successful however -- also -- -- not.
The league -- -- something he's -- he's got to use indicated always for is always and because frankly wasn't he does wanna get credit for a with a -- -- -- voters.
-- -- it just can't be us against them.
About.
Now.
So far.
Chuck the there seems.
Is a lot easier before the details come out.
But so far as you say.
The two -- we -- let me just bring up to speed the reason that comprehensive immigration reform never gotten past.
Was that big business -- free or like sub citizen workers that they could pay.
Terrible wages.
To do jobs that you attribute which says that Americans won't do if you wanna look at -- -- -- in New Mexico.
For about Katie and our.
You know be their guest so big business didn't like the idea to crack down.
And big labor and Democrats.
Didn't want to give it up this issue basic and when you get down to it to say that these Republicans are doing this we want you to be citizens that these guys are jerks.
Now as you -- looks like big businesses of it was in the called.
The other thing the big business losses they won't educated workers from university still to come at the very highest level right that's another thing that everybody -- and I think -- where you're gonna come and I met with business and labor leaders on this issue and what you're gonna get -- people who can hear what that sweet spot is in the middle -- -- coast.
We don't want to go too far left.
And we don't want to go too far right but businesses that look I will give up.
Giving you more pathways to citizenship if you give us all these visas that we -- at the very top -- and labor saying.
We need a full citizenship pathway and it needs to encompass everybody needs to be a very short -- not a long path.
So these conversations are going to be the key to see what that middle looks like.
-- the concern on the right or among those who the president might say -- were xenophobia court against.
A pathway to citizenship Jim is that can be concerned there is.
If the pathway and your continued legal status in the United States are not connected that is to say that if it's not a condition.
You getting to remain in the country -- -- To be on the pathway to citizenship because wouldn't it be true that if you could.
If you didn't have to be on the pathway to stay to be a lot of people who say I don't wanna do the -- I don't pay taxes I don't wanna do -- -- I enjoyed some benefits about being over here in the shadows.
Right is that the devil's in the details on these things and that's far from worked out and there will be plenty of pushed back just as Lorena was all over this this morning is on her radio she loves it she's -- she's a great idea at Santa.
I'm -- -- ahead is enormous support I mean.
-- in the business community especially the high and high tech world.
That kind of compelling statistic 42%.
Of also primarily serves 42%.
We're sort of if people want -- sudden instincts.
That's a lot of economic activity that we just imported -- and our question loses a fan comprehensive immigration reform.
Said look into it and that is that one of America's big comparative advantages and the economy is our ability to have fact and there's more funnel appear that it -- -- -- -- -- -- -- list of who.
It in any safer and freer and everything else the sacred right of us here America's most places.
That's that's a compelling argument Olympic.
He got the gophers -- he gets the last -- we thank you.
Stay dry out there gentleman Jim thank you can do it -- you -- -- -- 323 is a group of eight is anything like the gang of six don't hold your breath.
Well big any that's true but this situation is different for Republicans are desperate desperate to get out from underneath this immigration issue because it's kicking him in the teeth every election so they have a self interest and urged to make something happen here graduates -- -- we were promised no more amnesty and Clinton did it last I was Reagan they did the big game -- That said this and then nothing more and then along the complicated place -- called US Mexico border things remain pretty porous for the next -- Thirty years yourself.
It's more of your -- we'll talk about the reboot the Republican Party and so think about this who's right.
-- -- -- Or Paul Ryan we will explore that question when we come back -- -- stick around.
-- try to divide -- the only emergencies in bogus deals.
He'll try to get -- to fight with each other to question each other's motives so we don't challenge him.
If we play into his hands.
We will betrayed the voters who supported us in the country we -- to serve.
We can't let that happen.
We have to be Smart.
We have to show prudence.
That was Paul Ryan you may remember and he ran for vice president of the United States last year he was speaking at the national review institute.
A conclave of conservative -- -- here in Washington DC on Saturday and this is our class welcome back.
Now the Republicans are wrestling with something Ryan there in the ball fairly complicated speech I'm sure the -- Talked about what Republicans need to do right now is go heavy on detail.
Dive deep -- policy get really lucky and latest stuff out there are so that they demonstrate that they can govern a country and there are serious governing party.
And Bobby Jindal.
-- governor Louisiana.
Who is a mega -- from the first waters of the first -- there's no question not even Paul Ryan speaking this can rival as he made his bones -- -- Medicare expert seriously.
Says it's time to quit with the -- and the numbers and the debt -- and start talking about growth in vision and compassion.
-- even if he's not the guy that can do it.
Ever since he did that thing from Disney's haunted mansion ride in response to the president's first.
See the union address that what the Republicans have to do is charisma -- Not green eye shades so which way will they got.
You know who probably knows -- -- He is now of the Washington -- incorrect but as it traveled -- court or is he writes in Washington for some years -- and welcome back thanks for having the okay now.
Here's the question.
Jindal and Ryan have these divergent ideas about what is it more data or -- or more harm.
Is it as simple as that.
Do you think you need more data but you also need that you presented in a way that demonstrates to the people you're trying to win over.
Why -- your argument is going to make their lives better I think the president during the campaign made a point of drilling down.
Two a very personal level in trying to use these sorts of wedge issues to show key voting -- YE.
His policy for better or more often why Republicans policies would be damaging.
So I think the Republican Party should learn from that and should really try to bring this down to an individual level so that does require statistical analysis and such.
But I think -- more towards genitals end of this dichotomy in that you need to personalize it more than just leave it about numbers.
-- because you know -- the truth is and I saw.
You know Ryan and I wrote one time I was being mean and some of you were crabby -- and better than ever went on that Ryan and Mitt Romney sort of looked like a pair of German software engineers that didn't -- future plans.
-- to lay you off.
And they talked a lot about security and it's harder to talk about growth and it's harder to talk about cutting to growth yes.
It is ends -- you really need to lay -- a vision for what you were going to do rather than just being the party of opposition.
So I think the approach needs to be less Mitt Romney and worse day.
Chris Christie or Bobby Jindal -- -- going to be Chris Christie.
He's -- well done point being that it has to just focus on actual policies that are going to solve a given problem.
And Republicans have been very successful doing that on the state level Scott Walker is another example.
Putting in place -- -- that actually work and actually solve the problems that they set out to salt so.
I think looking at the state and federal level that's the that's the dichotomy that Republicans should be focusing.
Right now.
Who when we look at this it's not going to be Bobby Jindal he's not he's not the guy he's.
Homespun -- but he's not exactly he's not the heart warmer.
Is there anybody Chris Christie with his recent.
Problems with the Republican Party being out of the mix who else is out there.
I think Scott Walker is -- less charismatic figure but certainly he you know here's the record to two to back up his positions Mitch Daniels I think is another good example of that.
You know you have people on the federal level grew you know there might be less getting dark and there but people like marker -- you have the charisma and have the policy vision I think.
Two 22 sort of drive forward with this new agenda but I think first we need to lay out what that agenda is going to be and then decide who the person who's gonna be best to -- -- is good -- That.
A lot.
-- what should be.
What should we be watching for in the next 68 weeks in terms of seeing where the Republican parties -- I -- immigration deal I think it's gonna be -- sort of litmus test on where Republicans.
Don't move where they're looking to bring the party in terms of you're proposing policies rather than being the party of opposition so if they can propose meaningful reforms and conservative reforms.
Get something out of that deal and tackle major issue I think that's going to be it's not to.
Buckland -- the Internet thanks you.
-- tank says today -- illegal immigrants never have to pay back taxes.
That they the left will say it's -- -- burden where they were given -- government money to pay -- they're true they're not gonna have to pay back those tax is industry but at least they will be paying into.
Medicare and Social Security.
And that's something that they will be doing but we can say for another day the discussion of what happens to the cost assessments on the president's 2010.
Health insurance entitlement program if you had ten or eleven -- ten or eleven million low income.
People to bat so.
No doubt about that another day.
On the hunt with Jonathan Hunt is up next.
And it's Monday as we know that means no Charles so how about as a recompense some power points.
Personnel.
Over policy -- your power points today.
First PowerPoint Montana to rights.
Now Joseph Montana didn't run the ball a lot because he was really good at passing it in the mid 1980s we had Jerry Rice -- really good at catching it so wouldn't make sense for them to do a running game what it would have been foolish.
Ron Amadon would later run the ball well because he was a big dude and he was good at doing that Nelson Jerry Rice and gone kind of you know -- -- so you've got to do.
What your personality.
What your personnel allows you to do you can't do any different than that.
So here's your second PowerPoint.
President Warner after the Democrats got their spanking in 2004.
Followed on after an unexpected mid term loss they said the answer for the -- -- moderate -- come -- with these ideas and do these things and they said Mark Warner from Virginia Hillary -- these -- the -- -- people that are gonna go forward they would not have said that a freshman senator.
With middle name Hussein that was -- to the Iraq War and would go on to become the most liberal senator in the United States senate was the answer but it gets what he was the right man for the right moment he was really good at it.
So here's the third PowerPoint.
But productive process for the republicans' ideas are great and it's all fine and everything but it all comes down to personnel it all comes down to whether you're Ron Amadon.
Or whether you're Joseph Montana and it depends on who you've got that's what you're gonna do -- so productive process Republicans met last week at a North Carolina to try to figure out what they're gonna do about their nominating process if they wanna be successful for the presidency -- -- -- -- need to come up with something that works better.
And doesn't drag them over a thousand yards -- broken glass to try to get a nominee.
Just -- thought just saying for them if they want to think about that there -- some power points to consider.
And as I said no Charles today.
-- Internet I'll be seeing you and all those old familiar places here at 11:30 AM tomorrow morning.
Have a great day we'll see you soon.
