There was a new deadline now declared for congress to get a budget novel idea -- -- be the next big battle in Washington a bit earlier today a talk with senator Marco Rubio about that.
Listen to how he explains why the senate.
Has failed on this front for years.
Senator rubio thank you it's good to see again live from Capitol Hill not a double dip today on America's Newsroom with you.
But the house Republicans are telling the send to show their hand on a budget.
A budget that has not been produced from the senate in about four years time.
Right now I'm just curious on the outside.
You guys even talk about that and senate.
Well for sought to clear people understand that the senate is controlled by Democrats up on my party my party was in charge us I know how I understand on an idea sit around think my gosh -- -- we're supposed to have a budget.
Yeah I mean not the -- people make and we -- -- -- but here's the reason why we haven't had a budget.
Because when you budget you have to make choices you have to upset people in -- you have to go and tell people sorry we can't afford to pay for what you want it may be a very good program but we don't have the money for.
That's a politically when you're trying to hold onto your majority you don't produce a budget is you don't want to offend anybody and that's why there hasn't been -- -- out of the senate now they say they're going to do a budget this year.
I hope that they did.
Because -- without a budget how can we plan for our future and how -- the American people know where their money is going.
Well mid April is when the -- supposed to come out and then about mid may news the extension of the debt ceiling.
But come back to your answer here is that the motivation for her Reid not to produce a budget doesn't want to offend people.
Well I think that they don't -- produce a budget because it makes you make choices understand going in the past year coming out of the 2010 election.
He was afraid and they were afraid of losing their majority so they avoided every tough issue every tough issue we hardly did anything for two years in the senate and one of the things that didn't happen -- -- budget.
Why because when you have to budget you have to make decisions you can't just speak in platitudes and and so that's why they've avoided doing a budget but I think -- time is up.
Now they said they're gonna produce a budget this year that's important so that we can can look what they did the Paul Ryan's budget how they -- up.
That's why -- -- wanna produce one of their own.
So it's my assumption the senate passes a budget mid April.
And that's loaded with tax hikes and that goes in the house Republicans in the house and forget about it we're not moving on now right that -- that's right.
Well then now obviously the normal process begins of negotiation -- the two sides have to reconcile.
Their differences in what they call a conference and that's the way this place is supposed to work by the way not be a press conference would be a law making.
So -- the senate and obviously -- loaded with tax increases and things that are bad for our economy.
They're not gonna have the support of Republicans but they have enough votes to pass a budget from the senate and the house -- pass their budget and -- both sides ought to negotiate.
To come up with a final -- if -- -- as we know has been done if there is no final package no agreement you've -- Paul Ryan this is sequestration will take effect.
And the customer requirement of law department offense will happen.
Yeah I would bet that will happen by lighting -- Paul Ryan saying that's right.
That is scheduled to happen unless something keeps it from happening and if there's no agreement between the two sides it's going to automatically happen.
It's not good for our national defense it's not really the best way to balance our budget.
-- but in the absence of no action that's exactly what's gonna so with the budget the debt ceiling your immigration push that that becomes a pretty crowded calendar.
It does not having to walk does that mean that new gun laws don't happen.
And get -- -- -- traction in this congress.
Yeah I don't expect that they -- and look I understand the issue of people raising it and why they're raising given the environment that we're in.
-- in the aftermath of -- horrible tragedy but gun laws are very ineffective in terms of lowering crime and violence in America.
No gun laws -- ever worked to accomplish out some of the part some of the places in this country with the strictest gun laws have the most violence.
And I and and and that I mean let's have that debate -- more than happy to point that -- just one more question on that.
Last week Harry Reid seemed to suggest that he did not want to point.
He is senate Democrats an uncomfortable situation regarding a vote on gun control.
That there are twenty democratic senators up for reelection in 2014.
-- it right is it your belief that is trying to give them cover.
Should.
Well I understand why we -- of the by the -- the right that the bear arms is not something that we made up it's in the constitution that is a constitutional right.
And I hope that there are Democrats that are uncomfortable about doing things that undermine that is a basic fundamental American right as one of the unique writes we have compared to the rest of the world.
And it's one that we're not gonna give up on easily I can tell you that much center thank you for your time again Marco Rubio the Republican from Florida thank you and you -- vigorous.
