Hi this KT let her a welcome -- -- country.
-- been watching the hearings this morning with Secretary Clinton.
Congressional hearings to be that exciting well now your gonna find out here on Defcon three.
The real story behind and Cassie and everything else that has to do with foreign affairs and national security interest so thank you so much for joining us.
Women's head straight down or DC bureau to speak to senator Jim and -- piece of Republican Michael -- member of the senate.
Armed services committee most recently was a member of the senate.
Foreign relations committee so he's -- guy at the crossroads between all the national security issues.
Thank you so much for joining us senator and -- -- very busy day for you know that we're allegedly with the thank you.
Now want to get right to it has spoken out about that confirmation hearings are going to be -- coming.
Next week with this with senator -- former colleague of yours -- United States senate President Obama has nominated him to be secretary of defense.
What's your take out of my know you've met with him several times recently.
We -- -- I came right and told him.
Head and in my office we sat down and visited I told him I would be opposing him.
Rather -- to wait around and act like I might be it would be swayed.
Through some kind of a here -- I Nolan I like him I served with him but we're just too far apart his attitude just -- I ran for example.
He was wanted -- few people who didn't wanna go after sanctions in Iran.
He's would have only I think three or four senators who didn't sign a letter of solidarity with him with Israel.
It he's just not been struck in he's member of -- -- zero new thing to I don't you've really gotten into that program.
But it's one that right now we have a real problem with our -- with their nuclear.
They which I hope would have a chance talk about and he's just on the other side of that issue so.
I I think I am inclined to think that he would not be confirmed I think.
Probably Republicans will.
I know that there are several -- who has three of -- snow that have already done it would probably look at that say you know we we gotta have somebody who thinks little bit differently.
Well is there anything that senator hagel could say to you either an open hearings or even in private hearings to reassure you that he doesn't have a problem.
With Iran and sanctions that he is going to be a strong supporter of Israelis not going to do anything of cutting defense in particular cut in the air and nuclear arsenals -- I think well.
I know you who have let us say to UKT is what I said to him.
You know you get it for years now you've had this particular philosophy.
We're we've we've followed -- we disagreed all these years.
-- I can't imagine someone coming along now in abandoning the things that he is said in the past and I've been to too many of these I've I've had people.
Stand up and say why didn't really mean that that was out of context.
And as I told.
If that we're just wondered two things that would be different and answer your question is no there's nothing to be said that would change my mind on it that.
Others I'm sure we're not as close to the issues perhaps -- Do you think and you don't think he'll be -- me and you don't think he'll be confirmed.
I -- I think there's a good shot that he will not be and I'm not sure -- be behind him and I know that Florida ladies and name that's been mentioned several times.
Frankly I was at Panetta I was very fond of him he and I were close it and -- so there's no reason.
That we can't get someone who is going to be at least somewhat in the middle of the road in terms of our national defense right now.
My big problem is what Obama has done to our our national defense -- ability to defend ourselves and what many surprising news coming.
Well let's go to a bit more to do tell us that no one of the jobs are gonna have on -- Senate Armed Services Committee is look at the defense cuts we all know defense cuts are coming but it's a big question of where are they going to come -- they gonna come out.
-- -- kind of come out of the force is what's your take.
Well at first because I had the position replaced Senator McCain and being the ranking member on armed services.
So I've really spent some time getting into this I remember KT.
Suspecting what would happen on his first budget.
I went to Afghanistan so I could actually be over there respond to his budget and no -- Obama's budget.
Yeah AK is I knew how bad it was going to be and I knew I'd get national attention with the -- going back and forth let.
Insuring that he did away with early fifth generation fighter in their -- to get away with our.
Future combat system that only advancement on the ground sixty years.
Did away with our lift capacity of the C seventeen in the worst thing it's -- that nobody pays any attention to.
Is that by taking away our grand ground base interceptors in Poland.
Now that was a really serious thing I think we know what he's done with ground based interceptors he's knocked him down from what we would have had.
54 -- -- down to thirty have now but they're all located on the West Coast.
-- and I'm satisfied even with that reduced number that we're safe there.
But if we get a missile that comes in -- -- comes in from.
-- it's safe from.
It would come -- over the East Coast in that way this that that footprint of our interceptor just barely -- the East Coast.
I'm not all happy with that now with the ground based interceptor.
We would have been perfectly safe with anything coming from -- read -- -- don't forget.
Our intelligence and this is not classified or unclassified intelligence his head -- -- reaching.
The capability of having a weapon and delivery system by 2015.
So this isn't anything new in their right on schedule well our ground based -- in Poland would have taken care that now literally hit.
We don't and so -- we're sitting around worried so that was just in one.
Insist that I would say this they always say it would no we have not decreased military spending.
It's actually has increased by one point 8% that you use a defense inflation figure 3.3.
No one disagrees with that and that means it's a reduction this translates.
Into -- reduction 39.
In in fiscal year thirteen.
-- So it is.
A serious thing.
And I look at this KT.
We have a president who with his own budget -- -- somehow people don't understand this.
That was the in the house had a -- was killed the senate doesn't have a budget so the president's budgets only budget we have.
In each what is this for -- he's increase the deficit by over but trillion dollars it's been five foot three -- -- so this is -- 30% increase in spending.
And everything except from except defense and he's decreasing the defense systems -- -- -- in its hands if it's if it's huge hits it really is.
Here I know you have -- no longer on the senate -- Sarah foreign relations committee -- -- we have had hearings this morning.
Secretary Clinton testified before the senate.
-- committee I did listen to those I know you've been in meetings and perhaps haven't had a chance.
But -- the things I was struck with and this is something you're going to have to -- -- -- the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
It is now very clear to everybody that al-Qaeda that Islamic extremists are really on the ascendancy in North Africa and -- even in Central Africa.
A part of the world -- we really haven't paid any attention to.
How do you think we're gonna have to deal with that.
Well I was you're talking to the right person -- -- because -- -- I was would -- instigated their first ever come and put everything under one wouldn't community but wouldn't wouldn't command.
Well with the it's going to be difficult because we we have now we've got the military down to the point where we can't.
Adequately defend America I can't tell you -- names but I had two of the commands in my office as recently as this morning.
They can't say anything this course they have a commander in cheek name Obama.
That we have been really serious problems.
Not just think that's independence in the systems that we have I mean you stop and think taking.
Downsizing the and the troops in the army 80000 Marines.
The ships down did 300.
All of these things are downgrading our ability to respond to these new threats that are there.
Not that this is a new threat that we've known for a long time is to squeeze takes place in the Middle East.
That the terrorist activity goes down to Djibouti in the Horn of Africa and spreads out.
People are thinking it just North Africa it's not it's gonna go all the way through Central Africa in -- We have done one thing that was kind of Smart it right immediately following.
We determined that that activity was gonna go into Africa so we.
Decided that we would help the Afghans build five African brigades so that when that happened.
They would be able to take some of that in the end end -- -- their responsibility.
Well they haven't gone as well as I'd like since that time that at least we are training Africans should take care of their own problems -- -- hopefully that'll.
Help us a little bit up here -- but keep in mind the big problem KT is that.
-- justices did dropping down the the the our defense budget.
But also this is the president is putting all of his a lot of his green programs we get identified thirteen billion dollars green programs that have come in.
Under the the under the defense budget.
Like using his bio field it's paying 59 dollars a gallon for -- -- for the air force it could be bought for three dollars a gallon.
-- step that should be in the Department of Energy.
Of his experimentation.
But they're not that's what he's been doing.
His renewables that are in their solar and the building refineries that's coming out of the the defense budget.
So the best way to answer your question is who we can't do that in this week's sharp pain -- just do our initiatives.
But that's -- senator I would not want to have to testify before your committee you really -- stuff and kiss is still much for joining us senator.
And -- -- ranking member and he's a top Republican on the house at a senate.
Armed services committee thanks so much for making time birthday today -- -- Katy okay well I want you ought to join our conversation audio out there said.
Please find me on Twitter -- -- -- -- join our live chat.
Now let's head over to the State Department -- our chief intelligence correspondent the absolutely visionary Catherine Herridge has the latest on the stories hearings and then -- Catherine what's up.
Well thank you KT I think two -- really emerged from the senate hearing this morning.
One was mrs.
Clinton statement said that she never personally reviewed nor denied any of the security request from the consulate in -- Ghazi.
And second that it was simply this fog of war in confusion after the attack.
Which led the administration to falsely claim that this -- is on video was to blame.
What we know from our reporting now is that all of that was severely undercut.
By the available intelligence that almost immediately the CIA believes that this was a coordinated commando style attack.
Secondly that on 912 ahead of the House Intelligence Committee confirmed that on the record to Fox News.
And many senators this morning just didn't -- mrs.
Clinton's explanation that she chose not to interview her own people the diplomatic security agents.
In Ben Ghazi.
After the attack because she was concerned about this perception she may be interfering.
This was seen as not credible and raise more questions about why this -- is on video narrative was allowed to maintain itself.
We were misled the -- closely protest meant something spraying out of that -- the salt spring out of that.
And that was easily the two but -- that that was not the fat but but in the American people -- -- that within days and and they.
He didn't know with all due respect the fact is we have four dead Americans what I am glad that -- protest it was a because of guys out for a walk one -- decide they go kill some Americans.
What difference at this point does it make it is our job.
To figure out what happened and do everything we -- to prevent it from ever happening again senator.
Clinton does not mention in that exchange.
Is that by 9143.
Days after the -- -- attack FBI agents.
Had interviewed this State Department agents from Ben Ghazi and they -- confirmed that there was no demonstration.
At the time of the attack.
And this was two days.
Before ambassador rice went on the Sunday talk shows claiming that this AT is on video.
Was responsible or inspired -- demonstration that spun out of control.
Another key piece of news this morning KTK for mrs.
Clinton when she said on the record.
That the weapons used in the Libyan hostage crisis last week came from Libya.
She also faced very pointed questions from senator Ron Paul.
As to whether the US had played any role in the movement of weapons out of Libya to Turkey.
Is the US involved with -- procuring of weapons transfer of weapons buying selling anyhow transferring weapons to Turkey.
I don't Libya.
I I will have take that question for the record -- that nobody's ever raised that with me.
I just a minute it's been in news reports that ships have been leaving from Libya and that they may have weapons and what I'd like to know is the -- that was close by.
Were they involved with procuring buying selling obtaining weapons.
And were any of these weapons being transferred to other countries any countries Turkey including well.
So you'll have to a direct direct that question to the agency that -- the -- Fox News reported.
Within weeks of the attack and that ambassador Stevens was in -- -- to help facilitate.
-- weapons transfer from one of the militias this is not denied by the State Department but was dismissed at the time it's just another rumor as to why he was in eastern Libya.
On the 9/11 anniversary about was what was not made clear at the hearing is what it was that was so important.
That would take the ambassador.
To eastern Libya -- area that he himself had -- headquarters the security was spiraling out of control.
On the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack against US citizens KT.
Reporting on senator Clinton's testimony this morning before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee thanks Katherine.
If you check out anything further on -- go to foxnews.com.
Live for complete coverage I have an opinion piece.
The you can check out at fox -- -- -- and I get ten questions.
I think the congress needs to ask Secretary Clinton about the Middle East.
Well I didn't ask him this morning and now we've got the one guy who probably could give the answers there's really better talk about this topic and Tom -- He's a senior fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies as far as I'm concerned he's probably the world's.
Best expert on al-Qaeda.
And al-Qaeda wannabes thank you so much for joining us county GOK did you chance to look at secretary Clinton's hearings this morning or listen to any I heard -- -- that your hands are written testimony.
OK what things I was struck with was she really has failed to talk about the bigger picture they -- to ask the question.
And she didn't answer but the bigger picture of al-Qaeda.
And al-Qaeda in the last two weeks somehow has to serve spun out of nowhere.
A country Molly which most people think is probably next time -- he had people where you know Hawaiian drinks and grass skirts.
But no but now this looks like it's the new Afghanistan.
The new al-Qaeda how is al-Qaeda changed and where is it now.
Well you know one thing -- since then secretary Clinton's test reduce money as she -- softball is diplomatic engagements they've -- with countries in the region.
Right ticks them off as a whole list of rank and she says the purpose behind only diplomatic engagements is really counter al-Qaeda syndicate of terror.
And it's free she is nothing left for saying -- that's completely different.
From the administration's own talking points battle kind of being on the path to defeat its closely being dead it's completely different from what the initiation is saying on in other regards so.
Here you have a high level initiation officials saying in most of her efforts are basically trying to counter Al qaeda's growth.
And we want administration's pertain -- Einstein as it pretty much a big disconnect there.
Again we think what are the arguments at the administration has made is that satellite footprint.
And in the Middle East and Africa are Africa and the Arab Spring after a lot of these -- -- toppled in part that's because I didn't want to have a heavy footprint that the Bush Administration.
Have with Iraq and Afghanistan that the heavy footprint didn't work and it looks like the light footprint isn't working and dealing with al-Qaeda what would.
Work well I mean I think you need at a heavier footprint and they're advocating for sure I mean think about -- the light footprint is has given us it's Syria the top.
Insurgency group the one that really -- insurgent groups go to for for expert its expertise really that.
Most lethal violence or is you is al-Qaeda the others are front which is controlled by al-Qaeda we know that by the state department's office -- that.
You go to Mali where they control large portion territory eastern Libya where they control through their malicious and other groups large territory the sign that we have al-Qaeda inspired groups and compulsory -- released -- -- springing up.
So the question is -- -- American troops on the on the ground there are already growing authority expanding have to fight somewhere the promise we're drawing back our troops everywhere.
Emerson -- you anywhere and well that's not working so I think what we have to do is we have to still use American troops American forces where we can selectively you know we can't put them everywhere that's for sure.
And we step to stay in places like Afghanistan -- -- -- -- out -- -- the -- all these other locally allied forces like the senator were saying previous segment in in Africa.
To fight the spreading you know basically -- spreading organization.
What happened the last two years and all of a sudden like you said we got bin Laden al-Qaeda is on the run and yet.
Here it is and it looks like it's been not -- and more countries but in much more lethal.
And and -- and bigger capacities and different countries of the farmer can launch an attack.
And western interests in -- -- has stayed away you know whole country away from Molly all the way.
To Libya Algeria what's happened in two years for your growth of al-Qaeda.
Well all kinds of President Clinton assign network and it's hard but what's happened -- -- these governments toppling and toppling is basically.
Parts of all have come to surface that bubbled up -- -- -- in fighting and fighting these insurgencies they can try and when he's -- -- is -- controlled territory which is really their ultimate goal and ultimate -- The administration many believe ultimate goals in us -- -- just part of -- game they're they're what they're trying to do was seize territory themselves on power so they're they're doing that they're waging insurgencies.
We also have a lot of prisoners a lot -- staffers offers.
-- appraisal prison previously imprisoned -- we're now out.
And around doing back in the game you look any choice countries you can find every single one of them -- You can find somebody or some people were previously imprisoned two are known all -- -- who now run basically the local kind of -- that's -- -- -- story.
So in other words these are people who -- hardened.
Fighters -- are now back in the fine.
-- have been identified since even before 9/11 as terrorists and now they're back out and back out anymore at least affiliated with al-Qaeda you see that everywhere from Egypt and Tunisia.
-- four months later knocked down after the people we know we're responsible and been passing you pointed out.
Did you identify the names of them before the -- passing attack even happen.
We know they're there why don't we go after.
It's basically the shifting in new US government's approach these matters right now we're treating attack in the Ghazi as an FBI.
Let law enforcement matter as opposed to intelligence and military led effort pays its wholly different paradigm -- different way of looking at this is -- -- -- -- in 1990s before nine elevenths.
Friday was if we just arrest or kill or target single isolate terrorists here in there and or bring some looming for criminal prosecution and we can defeat the threat right.
The problem is is seeing right now we're relying on -- local governments many of which have been compromised as a result the Arab Spring and -- not giving us support.
But I giving us help this of their fourth even promote justice model is not producing any results so basically have had this paradigm -- and it's a complete failure would say US government.
Isn't accept more attacks against American interests enrichment clients think they're going to come the hostage taking -- and there's an economy is there's nothing dissuade -- at this point.
-- there's nothing to say you know they're gonna keep playing these insurgencies are thinking trying to gain in neutral territory and -- keep coming at us Donna selective basis whenever they see the opportunity.
Would you straws with great effect in Pakistan and in decimated al-Qaeda Taliban does -- does it time to bring the -- -- to North Africa.
And probably -- selective basis I would say probably yes I mean he hears the -- of the drone wars right.
You bomb mystery should rightfully so takes credit for killing two senior Libyan aren't I had a senior living -- -- literally hundreds fingers and senior Libyan operas in particular who were very sees this -- -- we got those -- northern Pakistan to right.
The problem is that that that kills those guys but what were they up to -- they were building in affiliate in Libya.
-- -- holes and they live on through their new affiliate.
They may be dead near killed -- draws but guess what -- recruits the people that they were December -- their building is still there still growing and is nobody's doing anything only a year from now.
I think we're probably need even worse spot in terms of this this for a -- -- -- further because there's no comprehensive strategy by the US government to deal with.
It's all seen as law enforcement criminal justice problem for the most for the most part you know it's like you know obviously pentagon -- answers involved here and there but for most for look at Ganassi you know.
-- BI -- Levy investigation and new services we're actually finding material in the console and -- -- weeks after the FBI investigation.
I'm gonna tell -- time just when you are the world's expert I gather you've just hit a sand between phone calls to Washington DC where you are briefing.
Senators senate staff house campers and you're the man of the moment so thank you so much for taking time to be with us.
Time -- Foundation for the Defense of Democracies the guy who has all those terrorists jumping around his head announcing knows -- names.
The -- break I want -- -- had a great comments were getting a lot of action from the people who were watching the show.
Tracking media says we're sorry about the media this is one of the most device it didn't polarizing devices today.
How -- the American people going to understand which made it -- filed we seem to have this finally seemed to have that one.
One of our viewers is also on call them they're written in to say what you do with his arm sales while we sat selling arms to people who are not really helping us.
Is anyone listening -- -- Hillary did all she could for the people who are working for her they were the ones who screwed up so another words.
This viewer feels as Secretary Clinton not bush accepted full responsibility.
Didn't take any of the plan and then one comment that I thought was really great.
We get to the twenty survivors of the Ben Ghazi attack where are they -- and we've not seen -- we've not heard from -- Secretary Clinton herself this morning.
Says she didn't talk to them where are there aren't they the ones who were better able to tell us exactly what happened and then Cassie and when it happened.
We've got a question -- real quick break and I can back and talk about another part of the world that we've been talking about for years which is Afghanistan.
-- After a long and difficult yeah.
We finally are I didn't.
-- little calendar it's about establishing an Afghanistan and I'm starting to Afghanistan.
I think government.
-- -- -- result -- the future.
We're -- secretary what we just heard secretary Leon Panetta are welcoming Afghan president -- cars at a pentagon.
January tab -- laughs is that one of the greatest writers on all things tells -- he's with me out of studies that can't have marine.
-- assistant secretary of defense and we are in the Reagan administration.
-- us secretary Panetta has just added the United States as established as sovereign Afghanistan what do you think.
-- we achieve that mission.
Well we we did in both in Iraq and Afghanistan ten years ago and in my judgment if it was a mistake along mistakes.
And in both countries we we turn to.
The leaders who are incapable of leading and we said -- -- sovereign and we're here is your servants.
So it comes as no surprise to me that secretary Panetta would say I gave you all the sovereignty what he's really saying is I'm -- here.
-- I've given you ten years but sovereignty was -- -- mistake we made both countries they were incapable of defending themselves.
And we kept absolutely.
No leverage over the people in charge.
So the generals in the police chiefs and these secretaries of defense in those countries they.
They were incapable and they told us what to do so sovereignty was the biggest problem.
-- too -- -- so what are much of it or get out of Afghanistan what happens the day we leave Iraq I even had to do first of all.
Do we end of shooting -- way out.
-- -- -- -- -- I mean if I can answer the question I can also pick the stock market and then I would have to say here I just your antivirus -- idea but.
It's pretty clear that Afghanistan is going to come apart.
But it is a mess so what do we care what I mean there's.
There aren't going to be any American reporters there anymore and then it's not gonna make any difference to us it's already off -- -- -- -- it suits.
I was with secretary.
Defense Schlesinger when Vietnam fell -- assistant.
-- more than two months Vietnam and Cambodia were gone majors didn't exist in the American public's mind.
And the same things gonna have to -- Afghanistan.
This president President Obama wants to have nothing to do that the press is 90% in his favor they're not going to show us any problems in Afghanistan once we're not there.
It's it's it's like a tree in Wisconsin somewhere in the -- and it falls and that did you hear the noise no because you weren't there.
So it's going to be a mess and we're not gonna care.
Yeah okay well so I think Bush Administration made big mistakes Afghanistan and Iraq which you've written about very articulately.
What about being.
-- administration the light footprint and Ghazi.
-- toppled dictators in that region but yet we've done just the opposite we haven't stuck around to help establish -- to your house and senate government.
Well in my judgment.
At the first part under President Bush all of us the entire American public had nothing to do just one person it.
We were all guilty of this wonderful word who -- remember going back before 9/11 we thought we could do anything.
And and we've thought we had all the money in the world.
And so we went off and and did too much in Iraq and Afghanistan -- we didn't have to do.
And the same thing was it was -- -- happening here at home and all of a sudden you have the financial crash so I don't.
It's not President -- one human being it was all of us we -- all into this we can do anything.
The biggest problem I have with President Obama or is it's we can do nothing and should do nothing I mean.
It's manifest these getting out of the world but -- you can't just so to say Dubai World because the world's gonna come to your doorstep.
For the life of me I can't figure out what he's doing but he's going to do it.
He he declared in his inaugural -- bit.
A decade of war is older now -- wait we're into the second decade of war you don't just say -- war's over and M and think that -- god that ends.
And then he made that other terrible comment that we have peace in our time.
My goodness gracious.
Somebody's tone deaf in the White House -- or anti historical.
That was exactly what Ed chamberlin said back in 191940.
Which caused him to be thrown out of office when he -- a piece in my time was with Hitler there are certain things you can't have peace in your time where.
And we can't have peace in our time with the Islamist terrorists.
So where -- -- they're everywhere now there and being guys either -- There in there we have problems in Egypt and at.
Holy smokes and the president says we have peace in our time.
-- something's wrong here with the synapse is that not all closing but the American the American press in general is semi buying into it.
-- it's really weird.
Or silicon like on Iraq's and that's Rivera's two hottest who called.
But we need is -- -- in the middle while it reminds me of of the arguments were having.
The way the press.
Presents a problem in America -- problem in America -- according to the press is that congress is squabbling right well that's not the problem the problem is we're going to sink.
And the press knows it done well in the trying to say well the President Obama really wants to help what we know -- doesn't want to help.
Wow OK pretty profound stuff thanks so much for making time I know you're in New York tickets are important speeches so thank you very much.
Bing west -- -- secretary.
Of defense in the Reagan administration lot of guys that help when the Cold War.
And has been commenting on the worst we haven't won since.
That educate hey look I don't that's for joining us today.
