Senators heard from both sides today on the gun issue but besides the usual suspects there was a surprise witness today with one very special point of view.

Chief congressional correspondent Mike Emanuel is on Capitol Hill tonight.

Some six weeks after the Newtown Connecticut school shooting congress began to examine the issue of gun violence a high profile victim of a 2011 attack in Tucson Arizona.

Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy from rural Vermont promised the Second Amendment would continue to be protected -- -- offered this idea what responsible gun -- -- improving the background check system.

When I bought firearms in Vermont I go to the background check.

I would expect everybody else took the NRA says those precautions won't work in the real world when it comes to background checks let's be honest.

Background checks will never be universal.

Because criminals will never submit to them.

A recent Fox News poll revealed 56% of those surveyed favored banning high capacity clips.

And 54% supported banning assault weapons today the Baltimore County Maryland police chief back those steps.

The ban on assault weapons and high capacity ammunition must be reinstated.

Like assault weapons high capacity magazines are not used for hunting.

They do do not belong in our homes though an advocate says large weapons can make up for a woman's lack of size and strength.

The peace of mind that she has knowing that she has a scary looking guy and gives her more courage when she's fighting hard and violent criminals.

And if we -- these types of assault weapons you're putting women at a great disadvantage.

Most are not expecting gun control to go far expecting senate majority leader Harry Reid -- want to protect its members up for reelection in 2014.

So better enforcement of existing gun laws may be the best hope for those wishing to do more.
