-- Hello welcome to help -- I'm Dr.

-- often times.

People don't think about their heart health and it was too late.

Pretty much everything you do affects your heart.

But your biology also has something to do with it joining me now is often a cardiologist.

Doctors incensed by about.

To talk about her new book and also -- note doctors thought about is also the director of woman's heart disease Lenox hill in New York the biggest hospitals and we have.

But this book is a very personal book for -- Okay.

And you talk about that this is your own -- book.

In the sense.

I I really feel like everyone needs to write their own heart bucket and this is my heart back right well within the book I really explain how to write your heart.

We all know what it feels like to go on a diet to go off of the diet to start going to the gym and then to stop going -- -- What I really try to explain is if you don't really understand exactly who you are.

Then you don't really know exactly what you need to do for yourself for our heart healthy life and this is what this book is about.

How do you go about learning about yourself learning about your own hard and what you need to do for ultimate -- -- for heart -- And and you know I guess we have to tell everybody and pretty much we keep saying all the time and heart disease in women.

Is still the number one killer.

That they happen you know a lot of times is -- people don't pay attention especially when it's too late.

But but let's get to some specific.

You talk a lot about stress and into any -- -- -- got stresses.

Right up there.

You know let's talk about that what do you what can how -- people manage stress especially women.

One of the things that I -- in the Bakken and talk more about the fact that.

Thank goodness for Gloria Steinem but here we are juggling.

Everything right the career -- family that kids of John's dad my boss you -- boss every thing I know.

And destroy -- is on a different -- -- and to prevent.

And I think we're also used to just plowing through and with our checklists and getting through the day.

And we know.

What it feels like to have the stress hormones in our body and what happens is the court resolved -- -- friend.

Increases your heart rate your blood pressure could cause shortness of rapid testing and palpitations and all those things out of wanting their going on my goodness I have that.

So -- -- so from a technique point of view.

Give me some pointers that.

I think the most important thing is to acknowledge that you have it right and know that.

-- a lot of us haven't.

And -- -- got a -- thing about it not to ignore it it's really about breathing exercising finding something in the day that allows you to get them.

Stress hormones.

Prevention.

We continue to say and that's the Monterey I think for between fifteen and moving on -- preventing.

From a choice.

Lifestyle choice we talked about the biology.

What other big no -- for you when it comes to prevention.

I think the clear line across the board there's no such thing as smoking.

It just doesn't exist right I should -- bacon between those two I don't know -- -- -- -- why don't I can't I can't -- It you know among those times -- another four letter words is there -- -- -- you know these -- basics.

What we talk about a healthy diet it's really staying away from the -- staying away from the facts.

Exercising every day -- we know about the things that maybe we don't really talk about that much is the stress reduction part -- Really important.

Sex kinda important.

There you go that's -- -- want.

No wonder the book is read.

Let's how about other things that are very popular because you know we live in a society that everybody wants a pill for.

Let's quickly unequivocally -- about the use of aspirin now.

In certain sub group of woman do you advocate use -- -- -- -- Well we know that aspirin is very beneficial especially for preventing stroke were women over the age of 65.

The last -- that it depends on the woman if she has multiple risk factors for heart disease then yes aspirin is helpful.

But it's not great to take if you're just trying to prevent disease and you do everything else that's right focus on other thing.

Two three other quick ones.

Omega oils yes.

You like them for women -- -- there you go see him getting all the good stuff out there for you ladies.

How about calcium.

Well another day -- -- -- -- right now it really depends on the woman it's not great for every one.

You have to look at your risk of osteoporosis.

Vs your risk of heart disease.

And if your balance is really that you're more at risk for heart disease maybe calcium and Korea.

All right one item that is very of course very important for women is hormones now.

Let's talk a little bit about hormones how to they play a role in -- preventing or contributing to heart disease.

Well when I talk about hormones I don't just talk about the typical question again I really talk about the stress hormones and also.

Oxy -- and which is.

The hormone that makes us want to attend and be friend when we talk about dealing with stress.

But the first one in the major winnings estrogen -- as we go through man applies in ashes in deep creases.

Your risk of heart disease increases you lose that protection your LD -- bad cholesterol goes up HDL good -- goes down.

Tend to gain suddenly and then -- fight.

Through -- -- all these things are gonna happen.

The other thing is that women tend to.

Have built the way of dealing with stress is through -- -- beef branding which is due to -- -- and another one of these hormones that.

-- up during pregnancy and after delivery.

And we are now in the situation where we're dealing -- -- by the fighter flight which is the -- -- -- -- response instead of the -- -- in response and I think that.

Fighting against our normal biology.

And how we are really wire to deal with these things might be part of what's contributing to.

To heart isn't so one of the so if I -- -- right you you are.

What it quite grown perhaps to in women that have a premature deficiency in estrogen that they eat they get estrogen replacement therapy.

So for women who go into menopause little or no agreement applause.

Someplace like that absolutely we know that despite a lot of what we heard early -- night.

That when women go into -- cause hormone replacement therapy could be not for everyone.

But could be beneficial for the.

First tends thank you for coming this is a great book again the book it is.

Doctors and -- about hard book you can get it everywhere.

-- are everywhere and to get around my neck and it's an important topic because again heart disease is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity for women.

And you can prevented.

His focus -- that and then write your own -- book.

All right well thank you so much for coming on strong patty you have any health questions you can email me Arafat said doctor many of -- dot com.
