The Fox News alert for you right now on this nightmare situation that is unfolding in Alabama there's a five year old boy.
Who's being held hostage in an underground bunker.
By man accused of killing a school bus driver.
Federal hostage negotiators are speaking to the suspect through a ventilation pipe.
And they've managed to get the little -- some medication that he needs plus some crayons and some coloring books.
How might all of this end in a positive way my next guest.
Has four likely scenarios -- it happened mark Furman as a former LAPD homicide detective mark thank goodness you're here.
This is a life and death situation right now it's incredibly dangerous -- you and I -- -- proceed.
Cautiously let's talk about how you think.
Police can get this little five year old boy out safely.
Well it it's it's a tough situation Nelson of the suspect really has the tactical advantage there's there's no ways to view him.
The other ventilation pipe you have one way and when way out here and he has a hostage but it is going.
To collect that I would believe that he values his life as well as a child so I don't think this situation can get any better for the suspect than it is right now.
And it and I say that because -- he can negotiate.
For his own life -- -- as well as the child simply by letting the hostage.
Free and disarm himself and allow himself to be taken into custody and that is the best scenario that exists for him -- it.
This moment and detected what we have to talk about who the suspect -- mark he's his name is Jimmie -- -- 65 years old he is accused of killing.
This little boy's school bus driver earlier this week he's described by neighbors as threatening.
And violence he's apparently extremely anti government but we have to pray that there is some humanity still in.
-- soul so how do police negotiators tap into that.
Well I think they're trying to establish.
A relationship with the suspect but it's pretty difficult talking down through a ventilation shaft and sort of actually hard -- you know hard communications but.
They are trying to establish that they are slowly.
Letting him show his hand he's -- letting the child color.
In a coloring book that it they provided that made the heat their allowing him to give him medication so.
-- he's not the hard hard individual that we would want to portray without knowing that so there.
Trying to negotiate -- the freedom of the trial that and make him understand that if if he has concerns if he happens conspiratorial.
Concerns.
That the only way that they can be heard is if he comes out alive and I I I think that.
Once he realizes that his death won't mean nothing but his life might mean something then I think this might come to an end.
You're so right mark and mean and his life will certainly mean something if he lets the five year old boy go.
And -- on some level be a hero he will be.
He will not be hated as he would be if something were to happen to the spot girl boy let's talk about some of the things you -- believe.
Are in the suspects favor not -- say that he we he has television.
Down -- -- he has food and water.
He doesn't seem desperate he doesn't seem intimidated.
This it didn't poker that he's in is a tornado shelter and we understand from neighbors that he has stayed in their previously sometimes for as many as eight days so.
So ten police negotiators just be patient.
And wait him out.
I think there they are going to be patient and I think they expected this situation when they first heard.
You know of course when you see the situation unfold and local police contacts the FBI the FBI gets -- negotiators there hostage negotiators and swat team.
They they expect some of these things with what they were given us information we don't know enough about this man.
To make it to really.
Incredibly valuable.
I -- I haven't heard of any psychologist sort of seen him.
We've we've heard -- it is our criminal acts or his intimidation.
His acts in the neighborhood but.
-- there is some that some underlying reason why he is angry and quite possibly has a mental condition that we don't know about -- so they're trying to deal without the same time.
The -- is on his hand I have I have read that he -- sleep being.
That he is watching TV he's keeping up to speed on the events he has food he has water.
And he definitely has a tactical position on his side so this is going to go.
As long as the suspect wants it to go unless something else.
Actually occurs in other words -- change in the environment.
It if he has television and if he is watching let's hope that he hears the pleased to let the five year old little boy Ethan -- A mark Furman thanks so much for your expertise.
