The Department of Veterans Affairs reports nearly 30%.

Of all the Iraq and Afghan war veterans it treats.

Have been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder for 30%.

Doctor Cheryl are -- joins us now she's a psychologist and expert on PT SD doctor thank you.

-- -- -- -- -- -- Doctor -- it is is there a solution here is -- that there's something we as a community who who appreciates.

This bunch who's out there fighting for every is is there something more we need to be doing.

There definitely is something more we need to be doing -- I think -- supporting our troops.

Also has to do with supporting their mental health needs when they get back.

And one of the things about posttraumatic stress disorder we're seeing far more of this than we used to in other wars.

Because we have our soldiers doing so many more tourists.

Then ever before and also suffering traumatic brain injuries at the same time win when things explode they can have close head injuries.

And that makes the treatment even more complicated.

And PT -- can be thought of as our own bodies fighter flight sits down.

That gets disconnected from the president because it gets overwhelmed in a situation like combat.

And so what ends up happening is people can start to alternate between being very flooded.

By eight trauma and going very numb and disconnecting.

And so they're very it's treatments available to try to help people learn how to get back into the present know when they're safe and to not end up repeating.

Behaviors that may be appropriate in the battlefield but not.

In their homes authorities have indicated to us that this suspect did have some sort of problem whether it was PT SD or not we we don't know yet but that said.

How difficult is it to get someone to reconnect because the way you describe it they sort of the -- -- tend to go into a world of their own.

Let me come in and out of it it hit it says it's an alternating between feeling flooded by upsetting memories and emotions.

And then.

-- having kids sort of escape from that they go none it's like they hit -- and and there it's as if they're not there.

And what that there are different sorts of approaches and one of the older ways of treating it was called flooding which I think -- -- -- thing with the shooting.

I there -- some new treatments that are very exciting.

That I I.

Might want to mention would you be interested in that.

You know I'm really short on time but I do want to get him on our web site.

So if you would stay with the producers and for people -- it will get that up on the web -- at foxnews.com slash ship doctor Eric thank you.
