My -- back your microphones principal deputy Press Secretary at the White House judge -- NATO and judge and Josh is also is very good thank you judge all the specials as the president.
And I'm glad glad you join us tonight I was watching both the rubio and then Rand Paul and I don't know what speech they were responding to.
-- because they talked about stuff like this like they got the liberal playbook well we want to raise taxes he thinks government -- answered everything.
They weren't at all referring to anything the president talked about tonight.
What you look at an amateur is that Republican respond to the straw men respond.
They had to invent people that this agreement.
I I thought that.
-- -- united and not the other side but I mean Boehner.
I don't whether he's volatile lemon what was going on they didn't want to be -- -- was -- but.
I thought that the crescendo toward the end we talked about guns in the people -- -- 101000 birthdays missed and and that that doesn't deserve a vote that was certainly a key moment of tonight's address.
Well look that was that was a really powerful part of the president's speech and you'll have to read between the lines to see how.
Much of a priority that it that that this particular policy issues the president even when.
You know even wouldn't know when you saw the president react on the day out the terrible new -- tragedy.
It was clear that it really left an indelible mark on him.
And -- is something that is you know priority for him and that -- you know I got to play on and one of the things.
When we start talking with -- back in December there are a lot of you know a lot of pundits.
In Washington user data the president -- this issue and said you know this -- -- -- -- didn't talk about much in the first term what do we think you're gonna follow through on this at all.
But I think they would be very clear signal that the president is -- follow through and I think he's -- a demand a vote -- -- common sense measures -- actually do some minorities gun violence across the country.
-- just how much of what he's talking about Kenny actually get where they recalcitrant congress even some conservative Democrats who.
Seem to have some issues with a lot of what he talks about.
Well you know there is -- that we're gonna have a debate this country and that is that is good for our democracy.
But at the end of the day.
We have to have confidence in the system and our system is built around the idea.
But people in congress articles the American people.
About the way that we should about the direction of the country and the ideas the president -- was playing out today whether it's immigration reform.
Or reducing gun violence.
Or reducing -- you know addressing our -- -- -- challenges.
Or even strength in the coming from middle -- -- your ideas that were supported by the American people and that's not a hypothetical proposition.
These -- ideas the president talked about extensively during the campaign.
-- presently enjoyed a resounding victory in the campaign in the American people are undecided he's -- mobilize.
-- support and that energy and working to we're gonna get to the -- -- congress.
I heard before the address a lot of the advance -- was he's in the go out there and he's gonna.
Lay it on the line -- have them face reelection and it's not gonna compromise he's gonna be and I thought -- be very I would say conciliatory but there was certainly outreach to the other side that in.
Find that he was being overly aggressive in terms of here's what I want I I really felt the the tone was he wanted to work with congress -- -- -- get it back from the other side.
I do wonder to get back near the sentiment that this is yeah I think this has won the reaction of when you when you have a president's second term one consequence of that is.
You have a president who's really -- shouldn't get things done.
So what he's putting on the table what he's moving up on the agenda -- common sense proposals.
That shouldn't be that hard for most Democrats and a lot of Republicans to support.
That we aren't a place where we have a a political system that now structured where you have a Republican majority in the house.
And democratic majority in the senate took anything is gonna get done it is by definition.
Gonna have to get done and bipartisan fashion.
You have a president is committed to getting things done to be laid out some ideas to Democrats Republicans should be able to support it's certainly support by the American people.
And -- -- so it's time for its time for some action.
The NRA in conjunction with a speech -- a video that it put out.
That is claiming that the administration went to confiscate people's guns -- the things that are being talked about.
Or really about the movement toward gun confiscation.
And that is their latest foray into -- closing with the president's.
Certainly in tonight's address.
Yeah well look the first yeah the first to -- That you may be losing the argument if you if you have to.
-- things are true but the other side.
That millions and -- I think that is a pretty quick -- about how the the NRA in this cases it's faring in this debate.
The American people there is a a clear.
For a lot of the things the president talked about to -- to -- address the problem of gun violence.
And look it has nothing to do the Second Amendment the president -- -- believer in the Second Amendment and the president believes in the right to -- -- bear arms.
But at the same time and there are comments -- things we can do to reduce around this country and the president described to protect our most precious commodity which are children.
What happens march 1 was sequester we had on congressman from Texas earlier tonight comes from Michael Burgess.
Who really believe sequester is gonna happen is that the consensus in the White House as well.
I'm not really sure what's gonna happen.
I mean it would be a shame if we had a policy that was in place that nobody supported.
But it went into effect.
Because Republicans were essentially -- if you don't cut entitlement programs if you don't take a whack at the programs that benefit.
Though most vulnerable American citizens.
Then we are gonna wreck the economy and we're gonna whole Colorado our military.
That is an editor responsible way to pursue.
An ideological objective.
That we can have a legitimate debate about what we can do to try to deal with their debt debt debt to challenge -- the president ready to have that debate the president rated compromise the president Freddie do difficult things.
To reach an agreement.
But we're not seeing -- kind of that same kind of effort on the other side.
To -- to do some difficult things to introduce some common sense things -- beat beat -- difficult issues.
But the American people acknowledge that the only way we're gonna get this done if -- a balanced approach that involves making Smart cuts to government funding.
They admit that it that includes.
Realizing some savings from our -- programs that means reforming that program that will make them stronger over the long term but will yield some savings.
And asking those wealthiest Americans just the top one or 2%.
Detailed bit more and do their fair share if we.
Considered approach along the -- we can deal with our debts to challenges.
In a very significant meaningful way.
Boehner McConnell saying -- done with a tax issue that's thirty been settled where have they party raise taxes -- 1%.
Nelly getting into the cuts is that an accurate representation of where they are.
-- -- a gross distortion of the facts I think it was John Boehner himself -- at the end of last year spent.
Hold what -- time telling pretty much anybody who listened.
That the easiest way to raise about 800 billion dollars in revenue 800 billion with a B was to just close tax who pulled -- -- by the wealthiest Americans.
And -- those tax loopholes are still in effect so there's no reason we can't close the loop loopholes.
Realize some revenue makes them -- you couple that with some cuts to government spending that the president put on the table and -- and we've got a four trillion dollar deficit reduction deal.
If sequestered as heaven march 1 is it that only a matter of time -- it's kind of fixed that something is.
They jump in and really do solve the problem once the public reacts to what goes on.
I hope so -- -- they're -- consequences for that equipped to go to.
And then exclaim hey the White House cited the gonna blame -- on Democrats blame it on the White House.
When the majority of Republicans the house voted for.
Eight that's right including that majority leader think including that house Republican whip.
You know -- -- twice as many Republicans supported Democrats.
So look this is something that and John Boehner after the past John Boehner should get 90% of what he wanted -- -- It won't hit it's going to be -- -- -- and haven't -- shares appreciate talking to you especially in a busy night.
Like tonight thank you for your time -- -- don't -- -- -- thanks very much Josh -- principal deputy Press Secretary.
At the White House so.
