Let's go to news in Afghanistan now President Hamid Karzai is announcing plans to ban Afghan security forces.
From asking NATO forces to carry out airstrikes on residential areas.
Karzai saying he will issue a decree today in response to a NATO airstrike that killed ten civilians last week including women and children.
Afghan forces have requested the airstrike during a joint Afghan US operation.
That was targeting Taliban fighters in the northeastern part of Afghanistan.
But the supreme leader of Iran -- -- -- -- company insisting his nation.
Has no intention of developing nuclear weapons but he did add that if it did wish to build an atomic bomb.
He claims the United States.
Would not stop it.
So how close is Iran from getting a bomb in -- it'd be believed.
Joining us now -- it does every Sunday at this time is the former United States ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton ambassador it was good to see you good morning.
Good morning Eric studied by a that where we don't want a bomb when not gonna have one and you can't stop it if -- Ottawa.
Yeah and in law you know this is called -- in the alternative.
I didn't do it that if I did the devil made me -- and that that's pretty much what the Ayatollah Khamenei as saying.
And I think really it's very revealing that obviously repeating.
They're standard line that that their program is peaceful and they don't want nuclear weapons.
But I think indicating what's really going on is that that they feel very confident.
Under current circumstances.
That they've got time that got space they're gonna continue with their program and they're gonna build nuclear -- is pretty much when they feel like it what did you see in lately do you think that reaches that conclusion that there like full speed ahead.
Well you know the economic sanctions which have caused disruptions inside Iran have not slowed the nuclear program down at all just recently.
The regime in Tehran announced that they would be putting and thousands of new centrifuges in the times they've had plans to put in a that much more sophisticated centrifuge program at the fort -- location.
They continue to -- the international atomic energy agency.
They make it clear that they expect if they resume negotiations with the five permanent members of the Security Council.
That they expect relief from the economic sanctions in effect -- the price even for sitting down.
That this is the mark of a regime that's confident that it's got time and can out negotiate.
The west -- that you say they're confident but the president has made it clear that in his view that you will prevent them from getting a -- he says.
We will do what is necessary to prevent them from getting -- nuclear weapon that's a quote from President Obama.
Do you think that this administration will do what's necessary to prevent them.
Now clearly not and I think that's what Iran -- still I think it's also what Israel thanks while we're on the subject -- if you needed empirical evidence.
Honestly not just about the Obama administration but about the Bush Administration to look at North Korea.
Which last week on the day of the president's State of the Union Address exploded its third nuclear device having launched a missile in.
To earth orbit.
For the first time in December.
The tip that wasn't North Korea teaches a -- is continue to make progress in fact.
The smartest thing Iran could do I think at the moment would be.
To build a nuclear device and detonated because the same people who are saying now.
We can negotiator -- out of its nuclear weapons program would say as they are with Korea.
Well I guess we've got to accept their nuclear weapons state.
Yeah and there was a report that they had of the Iranian program was in North Korea supposedly looking at that.
But she signed as an activist American Iranian activist she wrote this about this denial quote.
She calls it a win win for both parties Tehran can continue slaughtering even more Iranians and keep building their nukes and President Obama will kick the can down the road.
Can go on to claim that he has scored a diplomatic coup and managed to talk the regime out of their nukes during his presidency.
Your reaction ambassador do you think there can be a breakthrough that the administration can claim success.
Well I think the administration will certainly -- that I think particularly with the new secretary of state of new secretary of defense the pros from Dover coming and they want to show that they can have a quick.
Success they're obviously not -- -- negotiate with North Korea at the moment so they're gonna try with a -- I'm very worried that there.
There evident desire to have a negotiation will.
The cause them to make the kinds of concessions that Iran wants and get that legitimacy even as.
They continue to support the Asad regime in Syria continue to support.
Terrorist all around the region and continue to make progress toward that nuclear objective and finally ended the negotiations into -- and now expect anything to come from that.
No I don't I think this is more an exercise from Iran's point of view I think they've got the west certainly where they wanted and they're just going to continue ahead.
Absent some indication from the Government of Israel that -- in fact is prepared to use military force will have to see what happens there aren't that in two weeks in basketball and always good to see you.
As always thank you very much of course.
