Few think you -- how many calories are in that fraph which you know you got at Starbucks will think again some food labels are flat out wrong.
Filmmaker Casey nice -- Tested the calorie counts of food from five different establishments here in New York City area and the results are unbelievable community morning.
All right let's talk about what -- looked -- elected Graham -- original younger muffin.
A Starbucks Grande coffee rapid chino then you had a chipotle.
Burrito.
You had a tofu sandwich we do -- don't have one on the set and he had a subway six -- -- which.
-- by law here in New York they've got to put up on the wall the number of calories right.
That's right here in new York and a couple other place there on the country and and soon.
With -- Obama -- be everywhere across the country.
If you're franchises more than twenty outlet you've got to post the calorie information and the idea is people need to know how many calories are put in the -- yeah I think it's a proactive way of maybe empowering -- -- -- -- -- know what you're -- -- all right so what you did was she went to the five different locations you bought the stuff and then what did you -- to.
Yes -- I think five items that I thought might make up a daily food intake share in and I worked with a couple of food scientists at the saint Luke's obesity research lab here in New York.
They know what they're doing they know what they're doing and then we tested these using.
Maybe the most one of the most accurate means of testing food calories all right.
And so let's talk a little bit about what you found and it it it's -- the numbers were.
Close.
In most cases with the exception of the -- Yet and I think like -- if we start to pull away.
Right so that is enormous -- it's a big meal and they stated that it had.
Wrote it down -- 11175.
Calories all right.
In the -- our tests came back with 12195.
Calories had more calories which is it's a big discrepancy put into polish defense is 10%.
The -- -- they're made by hand right I can accept short -- when it comes to the Starbucks beverage same situation it was over it was over by.
Twenty calories I think and that -- two calories.
Made by hand -- sort of exception with the muffin and muffins a little bit different because those are made somewhere and you they're they're not made by -- in a restaurant in those are labeled this the way the FDA requires them to be labeled.
I'm in that left and right there which is the yogurt -- then.
Had they said it had.
Where are we -- had 640 calories and actually at 735.
Calories my goodness.
And and finally we're demonstrative purposes the sandwich from subway actually had fewer calories and were posted on drilling into what I thought -- going to be the bad guy yeah he sandwich but actually they're the only ones that came in under.
-- in the same -- when I spoke with subway they're the only company that actually tested the same way we test.
I'm teasing multiple means of testing and then with the tofu sandwich I was a couple hundred calorie it was he has little bit more than double.
In their defense companies have -- unit test again in their results of the city is ours they're gonna change their label.
OK so now this is the important thing for people understand why it while it may be off just twenty calories -- a hundred or 200.
Through the course of the day and that's what you're trying to do Casey was figure out how many calories a person consumes in -- -- Essentially they were off by so many calories can really impact your weight.
And that was that doesn't know the summation of this videos just at the end of the day these are conclusive studies we didn't test multiple subjects -- restaurant.
But if this had been your intake for the day instead of needing 2700 calories which is about what I take in per day break he beating over 500 calories more.
And then the show with that rules that's almost a big Mac more and that's to be done it's more exactly right.
Knowledge is power.
He did a film for the New York Times it's called the calorie detected the real math behind food labels if you wanna check -- That collapse -- except.
