All right it's time now for Sunday house -- joining us this morning doctor David somebody vice chairman.

Of the department of urology chief at robotics at the Mount Sinai Medical Center here in new York and doctor Marc Siegel associate professor -- medicine and why is laying on medical center -- the house and the author of the inner pulse.

Unlocking the secret code of sickness and now.

Doctors who mourn the morning warning that's who we do here unlock it get -- going for the week.

And -- to start -- at this -- -- I -- incredible study that happened this week you've heard about this.

When -- go to the doctor you know I gonna wanna have all sorts of tests and whatever bring it on whatever they have but.

The study says that some of the common tests and treatments we get.

May not be necessary to -- some money this -- surprised.

Was its.

It is and it's not -- it's a continuation of what we talk about exactly a year ago.

Remembers about seventeen medical societies came together and under the auspices -- internal medicine foundation.

And they decided that a 135.

Tests and procedures may or may not be necessary.

And the list is long which is beyond this program know I had to -- the for sinusitis no X rays.

No cast -- for the children -- minor trauma.

No C section before 39 weeks on and on the goes on nobody -- because of radiation essential we don't need to get into that hold test.

I don't of course what we're learning is -- the -- constable choose wisely is that the more -- is not better.

Yeah I know mark is gonna talk about how the health care system in this country we're spending more etc.

But you know -- way to look at it is that the doctors -- ordering this test number one because it's available.

Number two because of technologically where advanced -- -- countries that we have -- when we use them the question is it's always been a one way.

Conversation I'm the doctor you're the -- so I write the prescription you go ahead and do it I.

Eric he wants you to tell folks at home when they go to the doctor tomorrow what's the question nation asked to know if the tests is necessary.

-- what -- I do.

Or do I really need -- so I think that communication is exactly what comes out of this which is important.

There are also some dangerous news that comes out of this saying that you know you should really not get any PSA test if you're healthy etc.

-- you have to be very careful.

About you how you interpret this.

I just wanna say something on the defense of doctors because it's always been about how doctors are ordering -- things or test that may not be necessary.

There's a -- out of malpractice.

Over every doctor and there's always a question of what this.

When they're writing the prescription and eats a lot of them in their heart they know that this pressure may or may not need to get a MR -- cats and they're afraid of getting lawsuits so I think if we change the system where doctors are more comfortable all of these tests will go out of the door.

Omar I mean -- you go to the doctor and the doctors as as David -- says we need this this and this you gonna do it.

So -- -- you know to challenge the doctor and you don't want to do that.

You know when we start with this a year ago I was really negative about it because the whole issue guidelines doesn't appeal to me I like it -- be a one on one conversation but as I've thought more about it -- -- seventeen more societies are added to -- I like what the American board of internal medicine is doing if it isn't over interpret it.

In other words they're reaching out to all the special -- and they're saying which tests that we need to worry about which test overall order.

And as David just mentioned doctors practice -- what I call a culture of fear it's not just that they may get sued for particular thing.

They may think I better make sure to cover my rear end on this because who knows if the one and a thousand person.

Has it.

That's not what patients need and what this is all about is furthering -- conversation between the doctor and the patient.

With a patient comes in and says do -- -- that test.

You know I just read something where you know -- -- 50% of of children that go to the emergency room because they hit their head -- getting a cat's scared doesn't like kidneys of cats here.

Well the American Academy of Neurology says only a few black out you -- one now that's not a one on one decision.

But that's something -- keep in mind.

Your American College of Cardiology -- saying maybe too many stress tests are ordered.

Maybe too many stress test leads to too many and you grounds it's not the tests that leads to the test it's the doctor.

And we've been doing this on this program since the beginning we've gone over most of these and pointed out you know it's in one on one decision.

Today we're gonna talk about thyroid disease and we're gonna talk about how that's probably under ordered it really depends on the -- all right so bottom line is ask your doctor if you really need it thank.
