And joining us to talk about the possible impact of sequestration former homeland security committee chair congressman Peter King thank you very much for joining us today.
I don't think you.
There are a lot of ways in which this could impact us so we're talking about national security think of the borders of course of defense.
-- what are your greatest concern if this happens on Friday.
Actually is a number of concerns I would have as far as Homeland Security but I'm speaking of myself as it's on the former chairman.
But I don't know I've -- very strongly believe that it's time.
Which are -- controlling the borders be cutting back on Border Patrol cutting back on immigration and customs enforcement.
Is that just a terrible a terrible step to take in additions that -- the Coast Guard which is a central part.
A Homeland Security the Secret Service essential part of Homeland Security.
And coming from new -- but typically concerned.
About the cutting back on grant money which is so important New York we have a thousand police officers working on counterterrorism every day.
And as it is we don't get reimburse enough that secretary Napolitano.
Has done a very good job and try to make.
Most of the money it's available to making the best use of it but having said that we still don't get an up and -- to be having carts.
In any -- would really have a serious.
Security impact on places like new York and other major red.
Terrorist targets of course -- country.
-- right so what are your hopes as a player in this equation and that lawmakers will get anything done on the hill in time I mean it seems that we have in many cases.
Governing crisis to crisis to crisis but this one is coming down to the wire do you think there's any chance sequester is -- it.
Also I'm gonna try to pass the -- here but -- present United States has shown a terrible lack of leadership here.
Not only do this idea originate from him in the first place.
But he should have been spending every waking moment doing -- rather playing golf with Tiger Woods for instance he should have had a summit I agree -- John McCain.
This year's summit meeting on this -- everyone comes together.
And neither side can you know take its position in cement what ever we're gonna have to move.
But the president as commander in chief as the leader.
It's gonna have to come forward and not just play the cheap political card talking about corporate gimmicks and attacks will polls all -- stuff that's great for campaign and he won the election.
But right now we're two governing and that he's not serious that I think that we are well.
Gonna going to sequestration which will be -- disaster not the president does move.
Then we have Republicans have an obligation to move as well support items on the table but so far the president looks like he's been capable of doing the leadership and that -- would troubles me because.
As Senator McCain says what national security and defense there's a real threat -- Homeland Security there's a real threat.
You know the Homeland Security barges become dramatically arrest several years is that it is and I'm not saying eighty -- -- billion dollars across the yeah.
Your budget is not possible -- from saying these are forced the board -- make no sense whatsoever the indiscriminate type cuts that we've made.
And also -- the president.
It's usually going out of his way to make the -- a few more painful than they would be but -- I didn't make cuts the -- your Homeland Security that going to be very arrogant.
President says you're not willing to compromise.
Well I wish the president would come forward.
And you want to sit down as drum -- how the summit get -- get the leaders of both parties together and sit down.
She hopes to people in politics -- further apart than Ronald Reagan most conservative president we ever had a Tip O'Neill when most liberals because the house we -- had.
But it came moments whether they like his brother or not there it will come together and -- -- deal.
Both made compromises they came toward the middle and actress I wanted to reverse they had to to -- we can't be locked in some ideological straitjacket.
Both sides have to realize -- compromise essential but the president as the leader of the country.
He's the one has to come forward I'm -- you go first president that makes some sense but how Republicans -- senate Republicans becoming elevate years.
Which the president -- just sit back and knocked down let everyone get into the room.
And you know locked the doors.
They'll go to the media people out.
And just try to hammer out a deal and home within an -- is surrendering to the bases -- -- Why I think folks across the political spectrum wish you all the best and getting to that final solution and that will be standing by minute by minute to see -- yet get it done before Friday.
Congressman Peter King thank you so are.
So thank you as always appreciate it.
