A lot of the patriot cut -- patriotic -- easy for me to say a private citizen trying to build a privately funded remember privately funded memorial.
To honor our nation's military veterans but there's a problem.
Our next guest has run into a blow blockade of political correctness anti Americanism and has actually been told the memorial he wants to building California cannot include the words.
The United States or any military emblems at all.
Here to explain his -- -- Corvette.
Steve -- Steve nice to see this morning welcome to show.
Good morning thank you for me on so put this in context for us you were trying to build this memorial on a public piece of land with private money.
Small tranquil town or -- California.
Very peaceful area.
And what happened.
Started out about three years ago we are designed to project.
Started up by young decide what kind of like -- we're gonna put up and as we move through the process we introduced today as a gateway monument project.
Through the California Department of Transportation.
And that the first thing that happened there after we reintroduced -- they they denied it because they said the American flag was in the center of it.
An American flag constituted a form of political speech.
So after we got that back I I really was very ticked off about that.
So then the next step was I knew it was a California State law.
That allowed the American flag in the California State flag in the state right away and in the exact area we were gonna build -- Memorial right and -- -- -- -- I would in California I've seen roundabout the drive your car round with a flagpole in the center of who's.
What speech is being infringed upon there.
Sure it would it went back to they claimed that after 9/11 there was a lawsuit.
It it ended up in the ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Threw a couple of ladies -- in Santa Cruz.
The put up he signs.
And there -- American -- -- over the overpasses.
And local policeman took down the peace signs but left left up the American flag.
So it ended up in the ninth Circuit Court Caltrans lost.
But in that instance Caltrans.
Changed their policy.
Based on that.
Which it in that instance that somebody would use in the American flag.
As their form of -- -- hanging in overly overpass yeah and I tried to convince cal -- that what we were trying to do.
Was perfectly legal it met US code for flying a flag.
The flight would be properly displayed should it was the right thing to do.
Seem to -- and -- now the other thing is that each faith come back to you -- -- you can't have the words the United States on the air.
What he's supposed to put -- quarter correct so after -- I got the fly goksel flag poles look there -- now the flags flying.
And I went back to the director of Caltrans -- Sacramento.
And I said OK since you allowed.
Down in San Diego a place culture -- park in the state right away you'll -- a mural of Fidel Castro since you're gonna do that.
Probably to fight renamed my veterans memorial.
To a tribute to the protectors of freedom in reintroduce this as transportation are.
The director got back to me and said -- I encourage you to do that.
So I did that.
You know Suzanne we're past this morning we know that over a thousand local veterans there all in agreement said if there's no United States written on there -- we're not putting up the monument where things stand this morning.
So that so basically that's what happened I had to get permission from each branch of the military to use their their seals.
I would like took me quite a while do that I took care of that I sent the letters and over a year ago to.
To a Caltrans.
With those letters it said that these seals cannot be changed in any way whatsoever.
So then what happened are proceeding through getting people lined up to help me the communities coming together build this project.
Have been just before I go before the county board of supervisors.
Caltrans comes in says we need to see a picture.
Of exactly what those heels are gonna look like.
So I get a hold of the foundry in Pennsylvania.
They send -- -- pitcher Caltrans takes that pitcher and Photoshop so United States.
Army you purpose when they took everything out they send it back to me it's an okay.
This is what you can use.
And I I thought whoa this is crazy it doesn't mean anything anymore -- of -- -- It'd be -- within statue of Fidel Castro they're Steve don't foresee were out of time this morning we want to mention though.
When you talk about cal -- we did reach out to cal -- we've not heard anything back from them so the fight continues Steve please keep us abreast of this fight.
As you move forward with this a monument we appreciate you joining us this morning.
Okay thank you very much thanks Steve coming.
