The Catholic Church is without -- The resignation of Benedict the sixteenth became official today.

College of cardinals elected him as leader of -- of the world's one billion Catholics eight years ago after the death of Pope John Paul the second.

Pope Benedict oversaw the church at a turbulent time which included much of -- fallout from the priest sex abuse scandal.

The fox -- chief correspondent Jonathan Hunt is with us tonight again everybody's asking what will his legacy be.

Well according to the experts I spoke to today -- he'll be considered a transitional.

Rather than a transformation.

Will -- Which is not to say according to those experts he didn't take some significant steps.

For instance his -- to the Muslim world including a very symbolic visit to this -- -- Blue Mosque in Turkey.

And according to Greg Toby and who's written several books on the Catholic Church.

He also -- down the process of facing up to the sexual abuse scandal even if he didn't do anywhere near enough in some people's eyes listen.

Before he became Pope he was aware of many of these cases.

And -- Also engage in a personal outreach to is to victims and a way that no one has very few bishops in the world have done.

He did that in the United States and Australia and other places -- so he'll be remembered for that it's not.

And on mixed.

Bag but he did more than anyone else.

But ironically Benedict the greatest legacy in the eyes of many experts may be the very way in which he left -- shipments so many issues on the table for whoever sits in that your next -- of course on the biggest of those will remain at the sexual abuse scandal and dealing with that.

But there is also again according to Greg -- A major issue dealing with the sometimes chaotic administration.

And politics of the -- something that he says Benedict simply wasn't very good -- Listen.

The older and more calm and people to -- gets the more powerful the entry becomes.

Within the Vatican.

Benedict was never known to be a strong administrator he was known as a theologian.

-- And that's a very credible leader.

Among the cardinals and among -- the bishops of the church.

So he didn't spend a lot of time trying to fix the bureaucracy in the mechanics and thus it's in more than a bit of disrepair now so for that.

The reason alone -- huge job that -- church faces in fixing.

Its internal structures a lot of experts believe that the cardinals will choose someone significantly.

Younger.

But in the 78 years of Benedict was when he took office make sense Jonathan Hunt thanks so much.
