And welcome to FOX News Sunday panel plus with bill -- still -- -- power is Scott Brown.
And Charles -- And we're gonna continue the discussion about the sequester about the the the real world impact of that and also the politics -- that.
Senator -- let me start with you and and is.
-- are Republicans underestimating.
The real world impact I mean.
You know that there -- line is it's not really gonna turn out to be as bad and it's gonna kick and slowly and people are gonna feel the effect.
On the other hand I have to say if flights are canceled if kids are thrown out of head start if maybe we won't know it but it majors.
Research programs and NIH -- cot that is gonna have an impact and -- might be some backlash against Republicans what you're.
A lot of dancing you say Republicans this -- -- -- Democrat -- Republican issue and a Republican -- it's a Democrat and Republican issue because.
We all voted for a passed by a majority the president -- we all voted for a majority of us.
And it's going forward and since then yes there are going to be cuts that we have the tools to move forward to step back from that.
When you have them and the house and senate to -- in fairness that the Republicans were the ones who insisted on it being purely spending cuts.
Well bottom line is we're in a sixteen point five trillion dollar national debt at what point do we get our fiscal and financial house in order -- SharePoint but I just saying that it -- -- the spending cuts hurt I think -- we have a president -- committed Democrats voting for that this sequestration and sequestration bill.
When it came up what it was it was it passed it went forward.
There were no problems at the select committee they -- gonna go do their jobs -- not gonna have those draconian that's what's been a year and a half.
They've known about his typically Washington speak in Washington style as you all know it way to the very last second.
Up against the wall -- if you put a great -- on a -- you don't vote for you hate America well.
He read the billion stand that you find out that you can do this you can actually give transfer authority to the DOD to the president.
To the cabinet folks and they can actually step through this and stuff.
Back from this all the things that you just reference but they don't want to.
You know it.
Chuck let's look at the big picture and -- it hasn't been Friday.
But since August of 2011 when the budget control act was passed to avoid that the debt limit -- the default.
This government that it congress Washington dysfunctional Washington house -- or as.
Institute at three and a half trillion dollars in deficit reduction in tax increases and -- spending cuts the good news is.
You know that is a significant amount the bad news is that they really haven't even begun to address.
The main drivers of that that which of course are the entitlements like Medicare and Social Security.
Big picture I mean is that it is the glass half full of a glass half empty in terms of -- we have dealt.
As ugly as it spins with the bat.
Well I think you know sometimes.
They're the sort of disruption.
Of of a policy didn't wanna have -- that was second best.
Can be fruitful in the in the sense of illustrating -- the cost of not dealing with the main issue.
Right and may be one benefit of going through sequestration was -- will be huge.
To show everyone know there really isn't an easy painless alternative to coping with entitlements and tax reform.
That's on my optimistic -- that's how I look at this situation.
-- you know and and you're absolutely right though.
When you count interest that they avoided dropped to about four trillion on -- deficit reduction are two problems one that still isn't enough to really stabilize.
Are particularly after the next few -- threatens to go up again as the baby boomers go on right and an apparent social -- and.
Secondly in some ways the parties are now little more dug in too contrasting views on entitlements because it -- talk about reasons Barack Obama prevailed when -- -- -- -- scare or you know the prospect of getting rid of Medicare if it was a big.
Probably a big part of it.
And so now the Democrats immediately seem like about five or 10% more committed to an untouchable Medicare and Medicaid and that's a bit of a that's a bit of a problem.
But perhaps if we do go through a little over -- not a fatal one not an apocalypse but a little wrenching period on sequestration.
It'll look instill some sense that people.
Bill you were talking.
Between the end of the show and now about the -- the situation in the house among house Republicans what's your sense of and there's a lot of unhappiness salute -- -- leadership it's they have speaker Boehner and leader cantor of a tough job so maybe the unhappiness is unfair.
But I Israel and more real I mean more vehement against -- were strongly felt that I would expect that and how much I love.
Just the -- of Saddam's strategy -- -- years and when you sequester was coming that they was not a secret.
And house Republicans passed nothing marked up no legislation and they they their talking point is we pass something last year.
And that was our attempt to deal that -- have to initiatives it's very difficult to get a -- Republican votes to do -- what this article first now.
It's the one body Republicans control if we can talk all we want Republicans like being a Republican governors -- a good job around the country they really are the end of the day it is one.
Federal part of the federal government public control and what's -- solution to this problem if you're a voter out there.
Oprah president -- -- -- irresponsible I think he's so exaggerated so much that -- that he's taken some hits from the media and all left.
But at the end of the day the Republicans didn't pass -- they're alternative and -- they are accepting defense cuts we talked a little bit earlier about the real world effects I do think.
But -- a pretty good now we're promised to cover rough week or two with some PR mistakes.
If this -- -- what you can shuffle money around defensively orbit did it really does look like civilian employees -- -- something like a fifteen to 20% pay cut.
Over the rest a year if they go with the Sierra -- levels -- -- -- say 10% cut that's a real cut off a lot of people who.
What do they do deserve that they're in the part of the department of the government described in the best of the last ten years not the part the did not get stimulus funds 2009 I'm like everyone else.
It's that they're the ones to take the brunt of the cuts and -- they don't spend money is on American canceled vacations off like they are Erica be ripple effects of the economy so I think.
My announces on this is that Obama was doing very well beginning of the fight he had a rough couple weeks from nervous that -- a Republican the Republicans are over asked are underestimating.
The ability present Obama somewhere to say look these guys have done nothing to fix this -- happy with the sequester levels as through real damage to the economy conceivably here's and you get Lee.
Opportunity to make sense of well.
Well -- -- alternate list.
Yeah well I think when the whole Obama's just trying to Republican Party and the Republican party's most of destroying itself and an Obama kind of comes and finishes them off that that's kind of what happens over and over again tonight the -- yeah.
I don't think a lot about about it you know and the biggest problem is that we keep having political solutions solutions to.
Policy problems so like what you were just talking about other sort of just taking it out on people.
Not that it -- a don't deserve it but it also isn't even addressing the problem assist us to be deficit reduction and they're not touching entitlements switcher.
Almost 60% of our budget I you know so that they're they're ignoring the thing that they need to do and then doing his political.
-- theater.
It's not gonna solve the problem.
