They had about the dinner last night right here just getting some reaction now from the senate Republicans who were there about the prospect of a grand bargain.
Being back on the table now after this dinner last night there's Senator John McCain as he walked out -- the dinner last evening.
Tennessee senator Bob worker was also among those who -- dining together and he joins me now senator good morning good data here today -- month.
Thank you thank you.
So illegal watching the president a lot of Republicans have been criticizing him for campaigning they say across the country.
And when he's done that in recent weeks he he really has not been all that kind to people from your party.
How was -- -- night.
I look it was a very sincere and I think a constructive manner -- and what you're referring to now certainly was discussed and I think there was.
You know there's an -- of cooperation that was created Martha I don't think we're gonna.
Have some grand bargain over the next month or six -- but I think the purpose was to lay the foundation for some -- over the next 45 months and and -- you -- you're listening audience believe that the number one issue facing our country.
Are these fiscal issues that still -- on a grass then hopefully this will lay the foundation for real solution -- those that we can put it in the rearview mirror.
Yeah there's been a feeling when you listen to the the what the president has said about the debt he always brings it up but he he often brings it up in a way.
This sort of an aside you know -- we're concerned about the -- you know we're concerned about the -- did you many different feeling from him last night about what -- is whether or not that has changed or whether he's willing to listen to your side about that more.
-- you know obviously the proof in the pudding and that is planning a real solution that we agree to but I will say that last night I thought there was a sincere and in depth conversation about.
The various touch points obviously Republicans -- -- -- entitlement reform so these programs are safe for the next 75 years.
President obviously is looking for revenues and so.
There were discussions along broad parameters last night and I think there was there were some areas of commonality which I hope we can build upon to solve this problem but yes I do think Martha last night there was.
Sincerity and -- us around this issue.
That hopefully will translate.
Over time and -- some real solutions.
That's a big piece of what you're discussing of course would be tax reform.
There's a feeling that it that you just reference the time -- four -- five months and there's a feeling that maybe that's how much time there is to really get tax reform.
In Washington before we get into the next election cycle was a discussion about that timeframe and about meaningful tax reform and working on it.
-- -- get a Republicans wanna -- pro growth tax reform item and we think it's one of the main drivers have an economy to lower writes no way of loopholes and we think that's something that's missing right now on this economic model that we have so.
Tom yes it's gonna take some time do you think you're right you know the election cycles gonna start right back -- -- January unfortunately and so I think most of us believe that the next 45 months is the most fruitful time for.
Something to happen but again Martha.
What we want to see as a real structural reforms to these entitlement approach programs and for the first.
I do think the president spoke to that last night.
At the same time look at we come of these things with differences we need to focus on the common areas build upon that and how do something that's great for this nation.
You know we know that in a couple of hours is gonna sit down for lunch with Paul Ryan.
There -- -- is scheduled with Democrats and Republicans on the hill next week this is 1 of the main central things as president has been criticized for.
-- doesn't roll up his sleeves and get into discussions in getting in in Boston.
This kind of politicking.
-- why do you think that's changing now if it is.
I have no I have no idea about -- you know the fact that this is such a media story to have dinner with twelve senators face of the fact that your -- has not been happening.
Hopefully that's gonna -- domain.
I don't know how lucky you cannot deal of our nation's biggest issues Martha without presidential involvement in just cannot happen and you look at the history of our nation that's the way it's -- so.
I do hope there's a change that's taking place I don't think the president want to spend the next three and a half years.
They don't -- a fiscal issue every six months every six -- And I know that we want to put it behind -- so again the prison at putting I certainly like this new approach much better than being campaigner in chief there's no question.
Hopefully it'll lead to a solution.
Going to be good for our country but I'm glad to say it happened it was wonderful thing John McCain setting aside the -- -- last night laughing.
That's something that we don't -- often and and hopefully again.
Both the the the joking around that took place but the slow -- of our conversations.
Walid is a good -- as a nation.
Sometimes need a little joking around to -- break the ice and begin -- -- as you say.
The proof is in the pudding and that putting would look something like tax reform that both sides could agree -- And also some entitlement spending cuts and some revenue and all of that the next senator I hope you come back into practice again because it's -- the beginning something him so let's taxi answer thank thank you so much temporary setup and you'll see and it it.
